Toriyama didn't care for what damn near 10 years? What makes him suddenly announce the name of Goku's mother. 10 years to late IMHO. Imagine if all fiction does that.Kaboom wrote:Some people apparently do, and it seems Toriyama cared enough to oblige them.penguintruth wrote:Who cares who Goku's mom is?

Sometimes it's just more fun to speculate than to actually know.

Somebody asking him about it, apparently. Or maybe just revisiting Goku's infancy through Jaco was enough to make him think something up and want to share.TheGmGoken wrote:Toriyama didn't care for what damn near 10 years? What makes him suddenly announce the name of Goku's mother.

So in all the history of Dragonball. Someone is NOW just asking him about Goku's mother? I don't buy that. This announcement seemed so random and sudden. I'm with Truth on this. The mystery of Goku's parent didn't need to be answered. It's not a jump the shark moment. Just so random.Kaboom wrote:Somebody asking him about it, apparently. Kaioshit Dammit. Goku's mom was a nice gentle Saiyan. FFS what is so wrong with the head bump being Goku's turn to being good. I liked how he was the only extreme odd ball of the Saiyans by being good. Now his mom was good too...or am I missing something..

Well then what about the second possibility I presented? That in the process of creating Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, a story that indirectly centers around baby Goku, he happened to think about the mystery of Goku's mom and come up with something? Something like that seems pretty likely, especially since he already came up with another "new" family member for another main character at the same time.

Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Saiyans have a lot of barbaric traits, but...why would Goku be the first one to ever take a hard whack to the head? How unlikely is it that no one else ever suffered the same trauma? Docile Saiyans could be a fairly common occurrence (though still heavily out numbered). We have Gine and Tarble, and then something similar with the 6 righteous Saiyan who did the god ritual and the other good Saiyans from said legend. So it seems to just be how some members of the race work in terms of personality, whether they hit their head or were born "defective". I mean, when Raditz first arrives on Earth, he realizes Goku doesn't have that typical Saiyan personality and immediately jumps to the head trauma conclusion. At the very least, docile Saiyans are prominent enough in their society that the "normal" ones have a go-to explanation for that behavior when they encounter it.dbzfan7 wrote:Kaioshit Dammit. Anyway, I don't see much of the problem. As of right now, Goku was still depicted as a beastly little hellion who took after his father and attacks a random old man the moment he lands in his pod during Jaco. It isn't until the bump to the head that is mentioned when Raditz arrives that he calms down, so everything about him that is important is preserved.
Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
It's understandable..it's not implausible, it just ruins one of the things I like about Goku. I loved how all the saiyans reacted towards him. I like the idea of Goku being defective by hitting his head. I liked how Saiyans were before all portrayed as evil and how Freeza was a bigger evil who wiped them out. But that's me.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Saiyans have a lot of barbaric traits, but...why would Goku be the first one to ever take a hard whack to the head? Lets not forget about Tarble being good. How about the other Good Saiyans that made SSG! How about most likely other good Saiyans! Everyone is a good Saiyan now!dbzfan7 wrote:Kaioshit Dammit. Because almost every fiction does this with one character. WOW! HE GOT HIT IN THE HEAD! Now lets make him forget everything. How many times have tv shows and cartoons done this? Almost EVERY show has it.DevilCorpse wrote:Saiyans have a lot of barbaric traits, but...why would Goku be the first one to ever take a hard whack to the head? Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Okay, hold on.....
Can someone tell me what's so terrible about knowing the name of Goku's mother?
I mean, it's just a name. We don't know her birthday, her birthplace, her backstory, her fashion preferences...all we know (so far) amounts to a trivial-but-kinda-interesting factoid. One that does not in any way rewrite Goku's character or insult the integrity of the series. It seems all the negative reaction to this is coming from some sort of bad feeling that a lousy spin-off will be made that somehow affects Goku's character development. Sure, I wouldn't put it beyond Toei, but still, that's kinda jumping the gun, isn't it?
Do we need to know the name of Goku's mother? No, but technically there are lots of interesting things about the Dragon Ball universe that we don't strictly need to know. From the trivial, like knowing that Mr. Satan is really named Mark, to the major, like the entire Bardock TV special. In fact, isn't the general consensus that that story was special because of how ultimately meaningless Bardock's sacrifice was? We know about Goku's father, and yet it didn't affect his character development.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
I'm not particularly fond of Gine being 'kind' of any sort. I think that waters down what makes the Saiyans so great. Now, if she was K'Ehleyr from Star Trek: The Next Generation, that would be awesome.

It makes me question if Toriyama even remembers how Goku became a good person.

P.Truth explained that,dbzfan7 wrote:It makes me question if Toriyama even remembers how Goku became a good person.
Honestly think they MIGHT go this route. Goku was always a good guy. He always was the savior. I hope they won't. But I feel like even if it's minor like something like "Maybe some of Gine's good charms is where Goku gets it from". If that the case then I might do what Mick Foley did a throw a brick at my TV.penguintruth wrote:I just get the feeling they're going to try to explain Goku's personality through his mother, instead of the time-tested tradition of him having fallen into a canyon and hit his head.
Much of his personality comes from BRAIN DAMAGE. That rock he hit his head on is his mother. I want to see Goku visit the rock every Mother's Day and put flowers around it.

As TheDevilsCorpse mentioned, Jaco shows quite well that he still remembers.dbzfan7 wrote:It makes me question if Toriyama even remembers how Goku became a good person.
I just don't see why some of you have to blow this so far out of proportion.
Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Well shit...Is Toriyama gonna retcon this and say Goku was always good or something too...Like Penguin said....it was the brain damage.Ryuman wrote:As TheDevilsCorpse mentioned, Jaco shows quite well that he still remembers.dbzfan7 wrote:It makes me question if Toriyama even remembers how Goku became a good person.
