Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
I will at least be satisfied if she looks like Raditz.
Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
So time will tell if this is better..or stupider than Hanassia from DBM.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
Spoiler:
Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Saiyans are a naturally primitive and aggressive warrior race that we can only imagine them fighting and feeding with meat. Toriyama named the Saiyans after vegetables on purpose in order to point out the antithesis. The word ''Saiya'' is actually the anagrammatism of the japanese word ''ya-sa-i''. For example, the whole family of Goku (Bardock, Raditz, Kakarot) was named after some edible roots.Rukura wrote:Anyone else wondering why Toriyama went for a Japanese vegetable name pun?

Oh no, a small bit of humorous sub text that probably wasn't even intentional MAY be gone. DB is ruined.Him gaining his carefree, playful personality from falling from a great height and hitting his noggin is a perfect, quirky way to explain his quirky personality. Especially when it's kind of quietly explained and then never mentioned again, like it was a joke, even in a really serious situation.

Kinda ruins the point of Goku hitting his head. If all along we can say "Goku got some of his traits from his mommy" then what was the point of the bumping head thing. Just say he's different. I know Toriyama don't plan ahead but years after the series is over. Seriously....why. Though why are we getting good Saiyans recently?ringworm128 wrote:Oh no, a small bit of humorous sub text that probably wasn't even intentional MAY be gone. Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
It would only be a retcon of yet another retcon anyways, since Toriyama came up with the Saiyan stuff so late into things (he also changed Piccolo from a Demon to a Namekian).
We don't even know if Goku's mother being nice impacts it at all, because while Goku's nicer than the Average Saiyan, he also still loves battle and had to be forced into romance due to how stupid he was about love and such.
This is the kind of thing where too much complaining might be for naught when we see it in action. We don't have that long a wait at least.

The good Saiyans thing is actually good because it develops the race. It shows that they can be different instead of the "all Germans are Nazi's" arc type.

Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Potentially that him hitting his head just made him forget a certain aspect of his personality, rather than giving him a new one entirely. Let's not forget, he was already smiling/laughing/generally a happy little baby at the end of the Bardock TV special, and he hadn't even hit his head yet. If they truly do go with the idea of Goku getting some of his traits from his mother (which wouldn't be absurd, because that is how genetics work), then him hitting his head on a rock still serves a point because it served to significantly tone down one element of his personality (the savage, more traditionally Saiyan side), in turn allowing another aspect (his kindness) to be more readily apparent.TheGmGoken wrote:Kinda ruins the point of Goku hitting his head. I think it's worth noting that if Goku didn't already have something within him that allowed him to develop his kindness, then what should have happened after he woke up from his comma as a kid was that he should have still been a savage, just a significantly more unintelligent one.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Why does everyone think Goku's mother made him nice? He was still wild and violent until he hit his head... Plus, he isn't too gentle to fight, and isn't really that interested in romance...

When that subtext informs a lot of the main character's personality and if you contradicted it with information about his parents it would reduce that to commonplace inherited traits, then yeah, it's kind of a big deal.ringworm128 wrote:Oh no, a small bit of humorous sub text that probably wasn't even intentional MAY be gone. Also, more deification of Goku's parents. Hey, maybe she was sent back in time and saved a whole other planet from another of Freeza's descendants. Though if that becomes true, I'm pretty much done with DB.

Kinda fucks up the point of Goku being "different" than the others. Hell Majin Vegeta speeches had to deal with Goku being pure hearted(and Lower Class) and being stronger than Vegeta. Having to many good Saiyans kinda ruins it IMHO. Goku not the odd ball out. Just in the unpopular group....ringworm128 wrote:The good Saiyans thing is actually good because it develops the race. Umm..everyone pretty much have this in the series. Goku even influence some people to turn GOOD. Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
You do realize that the head trauma was already a retcon, right? Is the head trauma bit evil for changing Goku's origin in the first place? Before that he was a naive monkey boy raised by an old man. We still don't even know if Gine will even be important, anyway.penguintruth wrote:When that subtext informs a lot of the main character's personality and if you contradicted it with information about his parents it would reduce that to commonplace inherited traits, then yeah, it's kind of a big deal.ringworm128 wrote:Oh no, a small bit of humorous sub text that probably wasn't even intentional MAY be gone. I do like the "Jaco got Toriyama receptive to fan questions for the first time in a long time" explanation.
Don't know. We don't have the details. Could she be marketable in any way? Because while Episode of Bardock has proven for all to see that Shueshia isn't above total nonsense by a forgetful author's kid's manga's standards, this could just be another Tarble or Jaco. Her surviving... is another matter, the story is over, let's not demean Freeza's knowledge of his operations any further, particularly when as a noncombatant she would not have reason to leave the planet.

Honestly this. If Saiyains don't have the capacity to be diverse enough to have minorities (In this case a temperamental one, which matters when you're biologically biased towards a violent end), it makes you wonder how they have enough grey matter to function at all. I love the intent of Super Sayain God because didn't make Goku a figure on a charge, it put him on the shoulders of giants- a type of Saiyain lost so deeply to the chasm of history that it took Goku's circumstances to bring it out again, and when it returned it returned violently back into the world. It certainly doesn't drain the irony of his being the one to break Freeza, at least not in a total way.ringworm128 wrote:The good Saiyans thing is actually good because it develops the race. Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
I hope Goku's personality has nothing to do with Gine. If she was like him you'd think Raditz would have said "You're a weakling, you're too kind like your mother was" or something when they met in the Saiyan Saga.
Re: Goku's mother...appearing soon?!
Still not understanding the overreaction to this.
Let's assume the worst case scenario comes true, Gine has Goku's hairstyle (not Raditz'), it's stated in narration "and it's from his mother that Goku inherited his kind and gentle heart". It's not....part of the manga. This is still supplementary material. Why on Earth does it matter at all? Like many do with Battle of Gods, you can ignore it. Toriyama's not breaking into everyone's homes and editing your copy of the manga with a pen to include Goku's mom and this "blasphemous" information about her.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
