The Hand-Drawn Animated Rarities...

Post by MagicBox » Mon Feb 03, 2014 4:22 am

I'm sure this topic has been done before, but I think we need something like this every now and then to refresh our memories.

You might have read the thread title and assumed I was talking about any one of these things.

- Public Service Special #01: "Gokū's Firefighting Regiment"
- Public Service Special #02: "Gokū's Traffic Safety"
- "Heya! Son Gokū And Friends Return!!"
- "The Plan To Eradicate The Super Saiyans"
- "Episode Of Bardock"
- The Dream 9 "Dragon Ball / One Piece / Toriko" Crossover Specials

But I figure everybody here probably knows about this stuff by now. By "rarities," I'm talking about the really obscure Dragon Ball stuff. The stuff that might have been forgotten. We know about the episodes, specials, movies, etc. But it seems like for every one of those, we also got a random TV spot with five or six seconds of brand new hand-drawn animation. Some of Toei's great animators were assigned to these projects, ensuring that the occasional video game opening or commercial would look better than the series itself! This stuff is everywhere, and it can be absolutely daunting for those fans who want to "see it all" to keep track of these things.

I know we probably can't post videos to all of these things, but I still think it would be nice to compile a little checklist of sorts (particularly with the commercials) and discuss which of these little gems we like most.

Miscellaneous Animation (Thanks to kei17 for certain videos and animator notes!)
- The Movie 06 New Year's Special (Animator: Naoki Miyahara)
- The 1992 Movie 07 Promotional Special
- The 1993 Year's End Special
- Hyper Anime Dragon Ball (Animator: Naoki Miyahara)
- Kyūtai Panic Adventure
- Kyūtai Panic Adventure Returns
- 1997-1999 Dr. Slump Series: Episodes 04 and 55-59.
- The "IQ Mirror Mistake 7" Game
- The "Japan Hero Awards" Tournament

Video Game Animation
- "The Plan To Eradicate The Saiyans" Playdia Footage
- The "Gather Together! Gokū World" Terebikko Footage
- The "Ultimate Battle 22" Opening & Bonus Character Opening
- The "FINAL BOUT" Opening
- The "Dragon Ball Z 2" ("Budōkai 2") Opening
- The "Dragon Ball Z 3" ("Budōkai 3") Opening
- The "Sagas" Opening (American-Only)
- The "Ultimate Blast" ("Ultimate Tenkaichi") Opening & Cutscenes
- The "Battle Of Z" Opening

When I mention the Playdia footage, I'm referring to all of the alternate cutscenes and hidden animations in that game. The "movie version" released on the Dragon Boxes didn't quite have everything.

Commercials (Thanks to kei17 for certain screenshots and animator notes!)
- The Dragon Ball "Kodomo Soft" Eye Drops Commercials
- The Dragon Ball "S&B" Chips Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Morphing Desk Commercial
- The Dragon Ball "III Gokūden" Commercial (Animator: Masaki Satō)
- The Dragon Ball "Advance Adventure" GBA Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Kodomo Soft" Eye Drops Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z "Kobacchi" Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z "Kyōshū! Saiyajin" Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "II Gekishin Freeza!!" Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z III Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Plan To Eradicate The Saiyans" Famicom Game Commercial
- The "Famicom Jump II" Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "LSI Bar-Code Wars" Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Gokū Hishōden" Game Boy Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Gokū Gekitōden" Game Boy Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Legendary Super Warriors" Game Boy Color Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Super Gokū-Den" Super Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Super Butōden 3" Super Famicom Game Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z "Hyper Dimension" Super Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Idainaru Gokū Densetsu" Cutscenes (sprite animation drawn by Toei's animators)
- The Dragon Ball Z "Buyū Retsuden" Mega Drive Game Commercial (Animator: Naotoshi Shida)
- The Dragon Ball Z "Plan To Eradicate The Saiyans" Playdia Game Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z "Gather Together! Gokū World" Terebikko Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Shin Butōden" Sega Saturn Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Ultimate Battle 22" Playstation Game Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z "Yogurt" Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Kyarakān" Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z Carddass Station Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z Study Desk Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z Disk Jack Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z Gumica Gummi Commercial
- The Dragon Ball GT "Kodomo Soft" Eye Drops Commercials
- The Dragon Ball GT School Supplies Commercials
- The Dragon Ball GT "Mushi Pan" Snack Commercial
- The Dragon Ball GT Hyper Desk Commercials
- The Dragon Ball GT Carddass Station Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Kai "Ultimate Butōden" DS Game Commercial
- The Dream 9 "Dragon Ball / One Piece" Commercial Bumpers
- The "Dragon Ball Heroes" Commercials
- The Battle Of Gods "Kentucky Fried Chicken" Commercials

Bonus: Korean "Hyundai Super Comboy" Commercial

These are all of the Dragon Ball Commercials I could find that had exclusive animation. Some of them can be seen here, here, here, and here. That second video also has a commercial for a kind of drink that comes with... a DB card inside? I don't get it.

I have a lot of nostalgia for the "Ultimate Battle 22" and "FINAL BOUT" openings, so those are probably my favorite. I love the desk commercials; those songs are so fantastically cheesy, yet catchy ("Super! Super! Super! Super!"). And I must admit, I really like those "Kodomo Soft" eye drop commercials. The fact that those lasted from Dragon Ball all the way through GT is strangely comforting to me.

Sadly, I'm sure this just barely scratches the surface. Have we pretty much lost all hope of ever having a complete list of commercials? There's no telling how many have been animated over the past 30 years. I'm sure a lot of us would love to see every last frame of animation ever drawn for this series, but this particular area of the franchise seems like a bit of a lost cause.

Found this strange super famicom comemercial a while back, it's not strictly DragonBall but it is in there.

Wow, I remember seeing that awhile ago. Still really cool to see haha.

But yeah, it's actually not a super famicom commercial, rather it's a Hyundai Super Comboy, a localized Korean version of the Super Famicom. (If you wonder why there's no nintendo in the name.. It's not pirated, but I think the company bought the rights to the system and games.)

You should also add these:

- The New Year Special (DBZ Movie 6) (Animator: Naoki Miyahara)
- Kyūtai Panic Adventure
- Kyūtai Panic Adventure Returns
- Hyper Anime Dragon Ball (Animator: Naoki Miyahara)

- The "Idainaru Gokū Densetsu" Cutscenes (sprite animation drawn by Toei's animators)

- The Dragon Ball "III Gokuden" (Animator: Masaki Satō)
- The Dragon Ball Z "Kyōshū! Saiyajin" Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "II Gekishin Freeza!!" Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "LSI Bar-Code Wars" Commercial
- The "Famicom Jump II" Famicom Game Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Yogurt" Commercial
- The Dragon Ball Z "Kyarakān" Commercials
- The Dragon Ball Z "Buyū Retsuden" Mega Drive Game Commercial (Animator: Naotoshi Shida)
- The "Dragon Ball Heroes" Trailers

I also remember some commercials with new animation during Kai's original run.

Super Butoden 1's commercial doesn't have hand-drawn animation (only weird 3D polygon animation), and the one for Super Butoden 2 doesn't have any new animation (Hyper Anime Dragon Ball with recycled cels from DBZ movie 9).

*facepalm* How on Earth did I forget about the "Kyūtai Panic Adventures" and the Dragon Ball Heroes promos?! Thanks a ton, kei! I really appreciate it. I'll go back throughout the day and take screencaps of the commercials I listed, too. This thread is better with visuals. :D

I came across this, but wasn't sure if I should count it or not. But considering what you said, I went back and included it. Thanks!

Thanks for the correction. Fixed!

I went back and added this, too, even considering this isn't really a Toei commercial. Thanks! :)

There is that crossover Doctor Slump(the second series) had with Dragon Ball. Murasaki, Blue, and King Nikochan team up to get the dragon balls from Son Goku.

Wow, Satou Masaki sure did a lot of promotional animation. Even Maeda Minoru finally got around to doing key animation again!

Doctor Slump (1997) episode #4, #55 (preview only), and #56-59.

Though I guess you're already aware of this because you wrote "The Dragon Ball Z Study Desk Commercials", it's worth noting that there are two versions and they have completely different animation.

The first version available on the DBox vol. 2 (Animator: Naotoshi Shida?)

The second version with Gotenks (Animator: Toshiyuki Kan'no)

In a databook named Dragon Ball Z Anime Special, you can see him drawing the key animation for the commercial of Dragon Ball III Gokuden.

You mention the Dream 9 special, but there are also the Dream 9 eyecatches/bumpers where characters from Dragon Ball and One Piece interact. Perhaps you counted them together.

Oh wow, that's right! Toei Animation and Studio Junio didn't do Tenshinhan versus Tao Pai-Pai. When I first saw that picture I thought it was Satou working on the 1986 TV series, but it was Seigasha who did that episode.

FYI, they were all drawn by Masahiro Shimanuki. He also animated the famous Shin Butoden commercial.

Nope, I had actually forgotten all about them, despite loving them.

Thanks for all the input, everyone!
