Why do people think the English Kai dub is so great?

Cui's improvement was very high up there as well.

I'm pretty sure that Kyle Hebert voiced Appule in Z as well apart from the episode where the character died, so it's not actually a recast.

Well....it was good, I suppose, but the only performance to do the character's extreme depth and complicated backstory complete justice was Mike's.

Colleen is horrible as Gohan. She is doing the woman pretending to be a boy voice, that a lot of dubs admittedly do, but hers is just painful. Her yelling is ear splitting and she doesn't sound like Nozawa, even though she's not supposed. Nozawa gave this introverted, shy performance, but managed to sound male and never bled into Kid Goku. I've also noticed that the older Gohan gets, the worse he sounds. His SSJ2 sounds forced, rather than cocky. He sounds more like a teenage girl, than a cocky 10 year old.

Gohan's Z Kai voice was absolutely unbearable for me, it was screechy and annoying. Gohan's Z dub voice is leagues better in comparison.

I would just like to point out that Nadolny more or less lost the rasp in her Gohan voice from 2002 onward. And for the record, I don't have a preference when it comes to kid Gohan, they both have their pros and cons.

Actually, that also includes the Ultimate Uncut redub of the first 67 episodes of the series, as well as movies 6-8, 1-3, and the video games.

Well, more than just movie 9. I forget the exact release dates, but FUNimation was releasing DBZ movies (including re-dubs of movies previously dubbed by Ocean/Pioneer) up until 2006. Not to mention video games. Still not a ton of content, but more than just movie 9.

I would also argue that, while the Ocean/Pioneer dubs are ultimately still better because they have the better script, that purely in terms of acting quality, the FUNimation cast was on par with the Ocean cast by the time they got to re-dubbing those movies. And two years later, the option to listen to the FUNimation dub with the original music existed as well.

No kidding? I guess I just wasn't even paying attention to the English version anymore by that point. Though I do vaguely recall watching the Raditz fight Ultimate Uncut and thinking Gohan's voice sounded nonsensical for how young he is at that point. Nadonly's voice was alright for the Cell era Gohan, but the younger version of him...eh, it's weird. I liked Colleen Clinkenbeard just fine either way.

I remember "Dude, my truck" but where did "I'm putting my foot down" occur? Someone referred to them as Nicktoon lines that slipped into the DVD; where else did this kind of thing happen?

Putting my Foot Down was a bad jokes made by Second Form Frieza as he stepped on Gohan's head.

In the so-called "remastered dub", Gohan was only re-dubbed for roughly 10 episodes.

I hate Gohan's voice in Kai. I will say the acting is much better than Z and I'm a fan of the original.

In general the dub is really good. Sean Schemmel is light years better as Goku compared to his original performance. Same goes for Sabat as Vegeta and the recasts were great as well (Chris Ayres as Freeza, Tatum as Zarbon and Coleen as 18 and Gohan). Much better script and more accurate portrayal of the series.

I didn't think the joke was that bad. Not something Freeza would necessarily say, but hardly as bad as many are making it out to be, and definitely delivered better than Young did with her bad dialog.
