Though, I will say his decision to self-destruct against Buu probably also had something to do with the fact he could visibly damage Buu during their initial fight, whereas Beerus was just lol'ing at everything. Also, self-destructing where he was would have killed off the entire cast.Blade wrote:I dunno, I think it's very much in character - as it's clear that Toriyama wanted to depict exactly the person that Vegeta had grown into through many years of living on Earth in peace times. Would Vegeta have been willing to sacrifice his pride so easily when hopelessly outclassed ten years previously? No, he blew himself up - but even then he did so having held his son in his arms crying, something he wouldn't have done ten years prior to that. For all that Toriyama is often criticised for his cardboard-cut-out characters, I think it's at least fair to say that no one has an entirely static personality throughout their entire involvement in the story.Ryuman wrote:Nah, he just seems to have softened up. Also, the dancing scene in BOG is funny because it's out of character.
I call that character development.

Re: Next DBZ Movie Featuring Vegeta?
Come to think about it Goku is hardly an involved husband and a rarely a father to both his sons. He always has to run off and train or fight someone.Ryuman wrote:That's not really what he's getting at. Like others said before, Vegeta just understands more about what family is, whereas Goku just sees everyone as a friend and restricts interaction with them to very casual forms.
- No, Goku has been in tougher scrapes where hes been beaten into near paralysis and still managed to come back up. He fainted against Bills and accepted it. Thats not Goku at all, Goku would only give up if he knew someone else would win in his place. The fact he lost in this movie was only marketing hype. Yet I never say a proper beatdown to justify it.Ryuman wrote:About your points on his behaviour:
- There wasn't really much else he could do. He gave up because he completely lost.
- I'm not too sure about this one. It's seems like post-Buu Goku. I think he was just interested in observing Beerus' fighting manner and seeing how strong everyone (Particularly Vegeta) had gotten.
- What bit is this? When he was fighting Beerus? I dunno. Kaio seems a bit of a punching bag sometimes. He was rather cocky the whole way though. Taught him a good lesson.
That's what I think, anyway.
- I guess, but he did the same thing with every other villain he ever fought, the first round was always him sizing up his enemies in battle while in battle and is the true tactician. Granted he wasnt there when Vegeta jumped in but he just laughed off everything Bills/Beers could have instantly killed everyone if he tried. Goku underestimated Bills though luck enough Bills wasnt evil, just insane.
- When Goku punched a hole in the Kaio planet. Yes it was cool but seemed a little unecessarly destructive for Goku. He didnt get that messy when he fought Kid Buu.

I understand what you're getting at. I think the overall nature of the match might've had something to do with it. There was almost a relaxed feeling, with rules about what would happen if Goku lost. Not to mention the fact that Goku was most definitely going all out, only for Beerus to be so much stronger. He was probably being a little more realistic about what he could actually achieve. I mean, he even somehow managed to return to his SSG form and absorb(?) the big energy ball meant to destroy the planet. There's not really much else beyond that he could possibly do. Who knows how much that took out of him as well. Having fought Beerus twice and being so far behind in both instances probably made him know where to draw he line. And I heavily doubt it had anything to do with marketing. Having Goku lose is kinda risky business at the end of the day.SingleFringe&Sparks wrote: - No, Goku has been in tougher scrapes where hes been beaten into near paralysis and still managed to come back up. Yeah, like I said. He started off cocky and ended up completely toyed with. He's been cocky before. I find it quite funny that he got into that state again, being so strong after Buu and just itching for a good opponent. The whole movie was pretty much a big lesson for Goku. Besides, I think a lot of it was just joke setup for Kaio.SingleFringe&Sparks wrote:- When Goku punched a hole in the Kaio planet. I was expecting to see something in the same concept of how nothing they did seemed to affect Fat/Kid Buu at all when they tried, then they'd use all the possible combinations of their attacks in a recap for them only to fail on Beerus. It would then emphasize that Goku needed a new form of power just to scratch Beerus or they'd all be killed if Beerus gets bered.Ryuman wrote:I understand what you're getting at. Yet in reality nobody was remotely beat up, just flicked away and woke up minutes later only to hit the bench. The entire promotion would have fit more for Goku vs Turles because during 70% of the entire fighr Goku was getting destroyed in a brutal fashion to a point of being physically beaten out of conciousness. It actually seemed like Goku was going to be killed, he even tried the spirit bomb and Turles cancelled it out because he was so strong and it was huge back then because it was his trump card. That was believable. Turles had proven he could have killed him.
Beerus on the other hand was too strong for his own good, making the fight boring because of the imbalance, he was also too controlled and too clean, not anywhere near the movie's usual fights. It wasnt griddy enough, there was no point where Goku got his clothing torn apart or bled at his limits which is what a real beatdown should and always has done to him, never just made him faint... Goku and Beerus weren't really fighting any more than they were just zipping around the screen in a rather jarringly low-qualiity CGI effect or wiping through the sky in ways you cant actually see. The fight wasnt really about Goku fighting him but more of the animation studio trying to hype up their fansy overexaggerated effects.
I actually think his personality in GT would make Vegeta a great protagonist if he was left in charge of the Earth for a while. He was so much more adjusted and assertive as the role he took in place of Goku in GT. If you all rewatch the scene with him confronting Dr. Myuu and Super 17, I think him acting like that would make him a good protagonist in place of an absent Goku.DonZ wrote:Tbh, I don't think Vegeta fit the role to be the protagonist. but I'd like to see that for once or two, it'd be refreshing for someone to take the protagonist role other than Goku or Gohan.

If the next movie is going to feature Vegeta, he needs to be the center of the fight instead of the decoy or punching bag. Thats the one thing Vegetas never had. A long Goku-style fight where it actually requires him to show off his actual technical skill and abilities in detail as opposed to his usual, impulsive rage-filled rush ins. Vegeta needs a fight comparable to Gokus fight with Freeza. He and the opponent need to connect, rather than be Vegeta losing his temper and being constantly mocked.

Honestly the closest fight to that was Vegeta vs ZarbonSingleFringe&Sparks wrote:If the next movie is going to feature Vegeta, he needs to be the center of the fight instead of the decoy or punching bag.
