Unpopular DB opinions
Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Toriyama DID give Vegeta a moustache, he just confused the design he did for GT for the one at the end of the manga. Given the small timeframe separating them, and that this mistake happened during all the Battle of Gods stuff, that's nowhere near equivalent to him calling Yamcha a cheater and being consistent with what he had written in the manga. Are you saying he forgot that he secretly had Yamcha not being a cheater despite never putting anything in the manga to suggest otherwise? It just doesn't make sense.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Can anyone give me any examples of Toriyama being forgetful about the story? I ALWAYS hear this, but never see anything to back it up.

The first that comes to mind is that he though SSJ2 was SSJ3 and had to re-read his own manga to remind himself.Kid Buu wrote:Can anyone give me any examples of Toriyama being forgetful about the story? I ALWAYS hear this, but never see anything to back it up.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I can think of only four examples:
1) Forgetting who Tao Pai Pai was in a joint interview with Eiichiro Oda.
2) Forgetting 18's hair during Battle of Gods' production.
3) Confusing GT and EoZ Vegeta during Battle of Gods' production.
4) Confusing SS2 and SS3 during Battle of Gods' production.

Link to interviews?
I read the Tao Pai Pai one. He didn't forget him, he just dismissed him as a minor character; which he kinda is anyway.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
So, basically, people declare Toriyama as senile and utterly unreliable because he forgot two or three details about some of the characters' hair in a comic he finished 20 years ago?

Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.
Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Well, that means the only examples I know come from Battle of Gods, which is a huge time gap from actually writing the manga - and every one of them is understandable. EoZ Vegeta and GT Vegeta aren't very far apart, and EoZ Vegeta doesn't actually have a different design for the end of the manga, Super Saiyan 2 is a very minor transformation for everyone but kid Gohan, and 18's hair was barely even coloured by Toriyama in the original serialization.Kid Buu wrote:Link to interviews?

Vegeta's moustache.
Super Saiyan 2 and 3.
Android 18's hair.

Ah okay thanks.
Well, according to this interview, Yamcha has a hard time finding an ideal partner because of his nervousness. First womanizer I've heard to extremely nervous around them.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Toriyama just didn't give a shit about Yamcha it seems.
Only marginally on-topic, but one of my favorite comedic/dramatic moments in the Buu Saga is when Buu just snacks on 18, Krillin, Yamcha and the rest in between two silly gag fights, and casually kills Tenshinhan with one kick from his severed legs later. If Toriyama was delving into self-parody at this point, this was him taking the "humans are useless" complaint to its logical extreme. What's more, not even Goku seems to give a shit when they're killed.

The humans in Dragon Ball were not interesting or engaging, and I'm glad they got shafted in favor of the Saiyans in Z.

Sometimes I'm too insecure to have my own positive opinions, sometimes I just go neutral towards everything, and sometimes I actually grow a pair.

I just didn't see Tien and Yamcha are not main characters for Z, but they played their roles perfectly when they appeared. Piccolo took Tien's role, because he had a lot more room for character development, could compete well in power, and added more variety. And Toriyama just added more comic relief with Krillin, replacing Yamcha's "big" role. He's Goku's best friend, so I think Toriyama chose right! I really like them, but they would have dragged the show down if they got more focus. I love Alfred, but I don't want him to gain new abilities, so he can compete with Batman, or give him a bigger spotlight. Then you ruin why I liked his character.thatdbzguy wrote:The humans in Dragon Ball were not interesting or engaging, and I'm glad they got shafted in favor of the Saiyans in Z.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
In Dragon Ball, Yamucha was nervous and "scared" of women. But in the anime (I'm pretty sure this is where it all started), by the "Mid-Air Amusement Park" thing, Yamucha was checking out other girls, which snowballed into DBZ where apparently he was dating othe girls and yadda yadda. This translated into the manga at some point too where I think Bulma mentions he was dating some other girl during the Raditz thing. I know definitely in the manga, Yamucha had another girlfriend by the Cell Games because he wanted to make a wish for his girlfriend.
It's possible he evolved into a womanizing person. If you wanna go deeper, maybe he was a womanizer because of his fears and insecurities around females. Then again, Dragon Ball was never written like Freud's memoirs, so I doubt that's the case. The characters are pretty simple.

Um, when? Because I just re-watched that episode a few days ago, and the only thing I remember is Husky coming on to him, and Yamucha doing his usual freak-out, which Blooma, as usual, misinterpreted. Hell, by the Garlic Jr. arc, it was still the same thing. Maron came onto him, and Yamucha chuckled nervously while sliding away, and Blooma got mad at him for... um... some reason.TheGreatness25 wrote:In Dragon Ball, Yamucha was nervous and "scared" of women. On-topic- might be unpopular on a Dragonball board but I'm more of a casual fan, I still enjoy the series but in a more relaxed manner and find it hard to discuss things without repeating my same old opinions. I do love that the site is dedicated to just Dragonball as I find off-topic discussion kills franchise boards.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Right in the ribbon army arc it is stated by Bulma's mom that Bulma is mad at Yamcha because of how popular he is with other girls. How Yamcha exactly responds to that popularity, if he enjoys it, if he seeks it, if he is indifferent to it, if he doesn't like it, all that is left ambiguous and we are left to wonder if Bulma is mad just because Yamcha is popular or because he is popular and reacts to that popularity.Saiga wrote: Are you saying he forgot that he secretly had Yamcha not being a cheater despite never putting anything in the manga to suggest otherwise?
Later, at the start of the Z portion of the manga, Bulma is mad at Yamcha, but she doesn't state why. Nonetheless, it seems clear that their relationship is troubled. Roshi isn't even surprised by her response.
However, we later find out, stated by Trunks, that Yamcha, over the years, has indeed somewhat responded to that popularity.
Also, there's a filler scene of Yamcha, in the original Dragon Ball, of him drooling over some girls while he's training at a gym. Its filler but Toriyama some times gave some ideas for filler, even though I have no idea if this particular scene had anything to do with Toriyama or not.
So, yeah, Bulma is bad i the faithful department, but there is stuff there to make us wonder about Yamcha too.
