"DBZ: Battle of Z" (360/PS3/Vita) Gameplay Help Thread

Post by Li'l Lemmy » Sat Feb 08, 2014 5:11 am

So I've noticed that the game is a little light on actually explaining the nuances of its mechanics...

And every new game usually ends up with a dedicated gameplay topic, so why not?

Like similar threads in the past, this topic is for the discussion of and requests for help regarding gameplay only. Opinions related to the game and its content should be relegated to the existing, appropriate topic. In short, if it ain't about HOW to play the game, then it doesn't belong here!

Myself, I'm a little confused as to how characters reviving other characters seems to work. At first I thought it was something that only Support types could do, but gameplay experience has taught me that this is not the case. I've been revived by Melee types too! How does this work?

If a mod wants to hijack this opening post to match the format of past game help threads, be my guest. This is just to get the ball rolling.

On PS3 - Press Right analog stick (R3), lock-on to knocked out character, fly to him/her and press triangle when close to him/her.
360 - Same thing, but it's Y here as the last step. The melee button, if you want to call it that.
Vita - To lock-on on allies, you have to touch the bottom-right screen. The rest is the same as on PS3.

By the way, I generally found it more useful to teleport to a character instead of simply flying to him/her. You can teleport by pressing guard (L1 on PS3 and Vita, LB on 360) and any direction you want to teleport to. That way, you're much less of a sitting duck than in normal flight and the speed difference is negligible, until maybe the later stages of the game.

Every character in the game can revive. It's just that some support characters, like Kid Gohan, have an special move that makes them automatically lock-on to a KO'd character and cross the map at extremely high speed to revive them, although you still have to watch out for obstacles and it doesn't seem to work after you've crossed a certain distance. Luckily the distance seems large enough to not be much an issue. You also get an orange-ish aura, which could mean you're invincible during the flight, but I'm not sure about that. Even if you're not, you're so fast that you're hard to hit anyway.
You can try this out in mission 3 with Kid Gohan and wait for Yamcha to get knocked out.

You can even use other abilities like Instant Transmission with SSJ2 Goku to your advantage for this. You'll still have to manually lock on and I'm not sure if it's as effective as the ability I described above, but it's worth a try. It's just something UnderlordTico on Youtube said on his strategies and gameplay tips video, so all credits go to him.

No idea if being revived the normal way by certain characters or classes, affects HP and SP gained per revive. I haven't noticed anything like that, so I don't think so. I do know that there are cards that increase the amount of HP restored (Senzu Beans) or give you a second wind when you reach zero retries (Super Regeneration).

Getting SS rankings on all of the missions will definitely give most players a challenge, but the online is pretty laggy.

Quick gameplay tip I wanted to throw out there for the trophy whores :P : if you're having a difficult time landing an Ultimate on Buu (or anyone else, really) in single player, use Broli. His high health will give you the most time to charge energy before getting knocked out.

Does anyone happen to know where you can get card 130 (Ginyu Force Pose)? It's the only one I need for the card complete trophy. I'd use Google for it, but strangely enough, nobody has done a guide yet on the locations of the cards.
I'd be very grateful if someone could help me.

Finally found it. The card popped up after beating the mission where you fight against the five Ginyu Force members, in co-op. I did have two Lucky Girl cards, but I'm not sure if it helped. I've heard Porunga's Wish only works when you're the host and maybe it's the same for the Lucky Girl card. I'm not sure about that. Maybe it's not even considered a rare game by the game, which makes the card useless in this case. I don't know, but anyway: at least you know where to get it if you still need it.

It's pretty strange what happened, since not only did I try that mission multiple times solo without any results, I actually got a second Ginyu Force Pose card by playing the 'Frieza Transforms' mission in co-op. I was not the host in that match too, so Lucky Girl might not have played a role here. Then there's the effect of the card, which seems strangely appropriate for these circumstances...

All of this makes me believe it's a card that can only be obtained in co-op, but I've never read or heard of something like this.

But at least I finally got it. Now I need to wait for Sunday to get the last three cards and I got pretty much everything I wanted. I don't have all the trophies yet, but I'll probably leave it at that. The online team trophies don't seem manageable without boosting/gathering a group just to get these trophies.

It was fun though, I'll probably return a few times to play the game again, most likely in co-op. Not my favorite Dragon Ball game, but there are pretty convincing positives to the game. I wonder what the next Dragon Ball game will bring, assuming there will be one. It would be cool if we hear about it at Japan Expo in the beginning of July, but that's just a wild guess.
I think I'll just forget about possible future Dragon Ball games (that interest me and I can play) for a while and be content with the games I do have, since speculation about it is probably not much more than pure guesswork right now.

So I do have a BoZ question... I'm having some issues in a couple of spots. I literally cannot get SS3 Gotenks, SS3 Goku or Legendary Broly. No matter how hard I try, I just can't get past an "A" rank on all those levels. Beating the crap out of them isn't an issue, I can do that easily, but I know, KNOW that is has to do with my combo chains, but here's where things get hard for me.

For trying to get SS3 Gotenks I know what you need to do to get the Special Bonus: 1) Get 2 or more MAX Chain and 2) Defeat SS3 Gotenks in 1 minute or less. The last part, impossible for me at this point, but my main problem is my chains and Synchros. I can't get a MAX on Gotenks when he gets stronger. I might be able to squeeze one out with Trunks or Goten (after beating one) and usually on Gotenks. The second he goes SS and SS3 forget it... I can't get a MAX chain to save my life and I can never get a Synchro . So I guess I need some pointers on what's the best to do. I know that you don't have to get both of the Special Bonus' to pass, as long as you chain things together and get the synchros... you can at least get an "S".

SS3 Goku is the same. I can beat him to a pulp, but can't seem to get anything past a 2 Chain.

On Legendary Broly... how the heck do you kill 30 Saibamen??!?!?! If I concentrate on them, then Broly kills me.

I'm past all the other stages and have unlocked everyone else up to Goku's Family Stage. It's just these stages are causing me issues to getting a character and proceeding to the next stage. So any advice would be super!

SS3 Gotenks: Equip an ultimate jewel, take Gotenks out first, and then pull off an ultimate on Piccolo.
SS3 Goku: Steroid up your characters and kill him. That'll give you both special bonuses and at least an S rank to unlock him.
Broly: Take out as many Saibamen as you can before he transforms. Super Saiyan Broly's a Ki Blast type so a few well-timed dodges should make him less of a threat.

As for chains, Melee and Support characters are best at pulling those off. However, you have let one of them start the chain and do your best to be the 3rd or 4th part of the chain.
