Has Dragon Ball Made Your Life Happier?

Re: Has Dragon Ball Made Your Life Happier?
I know this isn't an exact answer, but I will say Dragon Ball has helped make me a better person (that sentence sounds a bit snobbish. I know). Exactly 1 year ago to the day, I was badly beaten up at school (my eyes were so swollen I could hardly open them, for example). My dignity was in tatters and I felt worthless. A few days later, I watched some DBZ, and watching the way Goku forgives his enemies for their deeds and offers them second chances helped me forgive the person who hurt me, and made me less grudgeful (is that a word?) in general. Characters like Goku are an inspiration to me, and I aspire to be like them.

Re: Has Dragon Ball Made Your Life Happier?
So I just got my wisdom teeth removed, and of course, I'm not really feeling 100% because of it. I'm going to see myself if watching/reading some Dragon Ball will help make me a little less miserable.
By the way, sorry for getting a little off-topic, but I want to thank you guys. I know a lot of you may think poorly of me, or think I'm just some troll out for attention, but the things you said to me in the thread where I talked about wanting to get rid of all of my Dragon Ball stuff really touched me. Hell, I'm actually getting teary-eyed now while typing this because I just feel that touched. It's not everyday when random people on the internet type up such heart-warming advice and show so much care towards someone who they don't even know.
Thank you. I wish there were more people on the internet like you guys.

Re: Has Dragon Ball Made Your Life Happier?
5 years ago I had no interest in school, and barely any self confidence, my goal in life was to just work at a grocery store or something and play video games when I got a day off. Then I watched DBZ, it was like nothing I had ever seen, I really got into it and around that time we finally got the internet so I got involved with the online DBZ community. I started off watching parodies like Gozar's ARDBZ then I got into the DB Protest which was a bunch of people trying to boycott DBE, two of the members in that group were YouTubers who went by the names "The Beard of Power" and Xam3000hehe" they're videos explaining why DB was a good show really got me into looking at shows from a plot and character perspective and made me really respect DB as a series. I also discovered a AMV series called DBZ Random, it was pretty much a bunch of 30 second DBZ clips synced up to random songs but through it I discovered a bunch of new songs that really expanded my musical interests. I also discovered AMV Hell which got me into even more new music and got me interested in watching Evangelion, a show that yet again changed the way I viewed storytelling. Another thing I discovered through DB was Vocaloid which got me into the idea of making music as a career choice and Scott Morgans "Ginyu Jam" inspired me to start learning piano. Then there was the discussions here about the different OST's which got me interested in the idea of scoring series, movies etc. So I'm now working on becoming a composer. Also the many talks about the different dubs as well as people doing fandubs got me interested in voice acting and I'm now working on becoming a voice actor as a side career. DBZ also got me interested in Japanese culture. Also this forum helped improve my grammar immensely and it's been a great place to be for the last 3-4 years. And through all that my self confidence improved. So yeah, through DBZ my musical interests have expanded, my general interests have expanded, my views on storytelling has changed, my self confidence has improved and I now have goals to work for

Re: Has Dragon Ball Made Your Life Happier?
I'm guessing most anime review sites don't want to have the stigma of having had a voice actor personally come down and get in a fight with it's reviewer, since it'd make people wonder "JEEZ, what did that site do to make THEM mad?!". Either that, or they're worried about having their reviewer make the fanbase angry...
Penguintruth, this isn't me slamming you personally, of course, but you really do have to watch what you say, at least, to a certain extent.

Not gonna lie. That presumption makes me sad about the state of journalism. That a reviewer has an opinion about the abilities of a performer who performs in works he might be reviewing seems perfectly legitimate to me. That fans should balk about that should be irrelevant unless the purposes of reviewing is just to tell the people what they want to hear. But I guess that is becoming more and more the reality of it. Just like with video games, where the whole 8.8 uproar or whatever with Zelda happened, fans, for some stupid reason, expect their own feelings to be constantly parroted back at them, and if they aren't, the reviewer is "wrong".
That said, I could see it from the perspective of sites thinking penguintruth is too biased to judge Schemmel fairly based on their altercation. I don't buy it, but I could at least understand it.
But, hell, I think penguintruth should be able to parlay that successfully. This is the reviewer with the balls to go toe to toe with Sean Schemmel and not blink! After all, the acerbic critic genre is popular of late, right?

Have you seen what penguintruth wrote about Sean Schemmel in his review of Battle of Gods? I'm not trying to bash penguintruth but there were a lot of attacks against Schemmel in the review such as:Gaffer Tape wrote:RE: Fionordequester

I mean, Goku totally would have won had he been voiced by Sean Schemmel. I expect the dub to chalk up the defeat to a total lack of rugged gravitas, what with Goku being a sissy-man with that old lady's voice, am I right? When Sean Schemmel, Sanctified From On High, unleashes his mighty roars, the Japanese commit ritual suicide in droves. It was clearly he who was plucked from the tree of life by Toriyama himself to speak through Son Goku, and this Japanese version is clearly lacking such purity of spirit. O Save Us From Our Foolishness, Great Schemmel. Schemen.
That isn't even close to all of it there is much, much more including a video featuring Schemmel at the end. It would be one thing if they were justified criticisms based on his performance but to go out of your way to constantly attack Schemmel in a review that doesn't even have anything to do with him. Since Funimation hasn't even dubbed the movie yet. All of these attacks were in a review for a movie that he hasn't even worked on imagine what it would've been like if penguintruth had been reviewing an english dub of the movie containing Sean Schemmel. You honestly believe any company could trust him to be unbiased after reading this. Link to his review: http://otakurevolution.com/content/drag ... ods-review

Deep down we all just want to help! And I think your topic was a great one so no need to apologize. It makes me (and everyone else I'm sure) think back to why we even like DB. It brings tons of enjoyment and it makes all of our lives that much richer to live in! I'm sure it varies from fan to fan but DB has at least brought some joy to everyone who has spent some time watching it or reading it.thatdbzguy wrote:So I just got my wisdom teeth removed, and of course, I'm not really feeling 100% because of it. Yeah, I'm still not sure what the issue was with why you made so many threads (though reading between the lines, it seems like you were ashamed of liking DBZ for some reason), but...I'm just happy that it turned out you WEREN'T just some troll or something. Re: Has Dragon Ball Made Your Life Happier?
Heh, I highly doubt Sean Schemmel said anything to the people who run the site. He probably doesn't even remember who I am, nor should he. I never had a problem with him defending himself, I just thought it was amusing that he would only pick up on my one-liners and not my more reasoned criticisms, of which I'd like to at least think I've made here.Gaffer Tape wrote: So what happened? How did that preclude you from EVER being hired as an anime reviewer? Does Schemmel have them all in his back pocket?
I think a certain website's editor is just being extra (and ridiculously) cautious. They said to me that Schemmel might be offended were I hired. Though it's absurd that I should be denied a position because of some minor quibble from four years ago when Schemmel has never so much given an interview to these folks. And aside from DB, he's hardly even in the business anymore. I contributed more to the site than Schemmel ever did. I wasn't even TOLD why I couldn't be hired until just this week. After years of waiting to be hired from somebody who told me they wanted to.
As for my BoG review on my blog, it's not a jab to Schemmel at all. I have little to no problem with the man or his current work. I've never thought ill of him as a person. I was never trying to get his attention, and he was only one of many VAs from the DBZ dub that I thought were miscast. The review satirizes the extreme reaction from the editor to my criticism from four years ago. Essentially, it was a review written mostly so that only a few people could understand it, as only a few people are in on the joke. My beef isn't with Schemmel at all. It's with somebody else entirely. My review is about humor through hyperbole, though I did actually give my thoughts about the movie itself.
To be perfectly honest, Dragon Ball, while it has eaten up a lot of my time and energy, has given me plenty of joy over the years. It's why I shelled out for every Dragon Box Funimation put out, bought two volumes of Kai, and even found and bought the original Ocean dubs of the first three movies. I have an extensive DB/Z picture folder on my computer, listen to the Kikuchi and Yamamoto soundtracks daily, and love to talk about and praise the Japanese voice actors. I reviewed all 92 episodes of DBZ Kai (so far) on my blog (though some of them are reviews in name only). So obviously I have a passion about DB that extends beyond my need to vent my anger.
