Why do people think the English Kai dub is so great?

I didn't think the joke was that bad. Not something Freeza would necessarily say, but hardly as bad as many are making it out to be, and definitely delivered better than Young did with her bad dialog.

Oh, by leagues. It just took away from the moment drastically.

Ayres sucks as Freeza. Crispin Freeman should have been Freeza. His voice is so much more refined than Ayres it's not even funny. Not to mention that Freeza is supposed to have a DEEP voice for 3 of his forms. Ayres' voice is way too high pitched it's annoying. Freeman would nail Freeza and if not Freeza, then Zarbon. Michelle Ruff would be perfect for Gohan. She has so much range and acting skill so she could easily slip into a young boy voice. Kirk Thornton would be great as Vegeta. Funimation should have outsourced DBZ to Animaze/Bang Zoom/Studiopolis. The VAs in LA are on par with JP VAs, which means they are both way better than VAs from Texas.

Have you heard the Japanese Freeza? Ayres is as close as we got to the Japanese actor in any English dub of DBZ.

Have you heard the Japanese Freeza? Ayres is as close as we got to the Japanese actor in any English dub of DBZ.

I don't care if a VA copies the original. All I care about is acting and whether or not they fit the role or not. Secondly, Ayres sounds nothing like the original. I believe FormidableWarrior made a video about that, before his account got suspended. Ayres has an annoying squeaky voice, while the Japanese voice is close to a baritone during his first form. Ayres also makes his third form Freeza way too deep, while Nakao makes his sound like a badass alien type thing.

So which is it? Are you going to dictate a specific tone of voice possibly at the expense of other traits, or are you going to allow for the performance itself to speak for the role with its acting talent?

Using formidable warrior as a reference doesn't really help your argument considering how big a troll he is. And I never really found ayres annoying at all he seemed to fit the role very well but to each his own

Crispin freeman as zarbon is the only one I agree with I like kirk Thornton but his voice at least the one he normally uses wouldn't fit vegeta and Michelle ruff no thank you.

Look, the English dub of Kai is far from perfect. I'm still not into Cynthia Cranz's Chichi, which seems to only bring out the worst qualities of the character, Schemmel's Kaio is still marble-mouthed, McFarland's Roshi is still lacking character, and some of the script seems a little too "original" at times (meaning they still throw in their own random lines). I would have recast more roles if I were them, but there probably would have been an uproar.

Still, the massive improvement on the previous DBZ dubs is self evident. Not only is the script far closer to the original, at some points even scary close (English dub Freeza mentions the "ants against a dinosaur" metaphor Japanese Freeza says), but the voice acting is, for the most part, exponentially better. There are times when a voice actor will really nail the scene (including Sabat and Schemmel) and even now still surprise me when I listen. Sure, there are studios who might be able to do it better, but we have to work within the Funimation pool here. Let's be realistic, nobody's going to outsource the DBZ dub at this point.

It's a satisfying English dub, one of Funimation's better ones, though perhaps not one of their absolute best.

In a nutshell, FUNimation's Kai dub is a thousand times better than their old DBZ dub, which manages to finally bump it up to a "worth watching" level.

I didnt take much issue about it, except when Goku mentions a internet connection when mumbling to Bubbles and Gregory when Kaio is looking for New Namek.
