I don't think it had enough to be honest. It completely faded almost in Z.
Re: Do you think Dragon Ball had too much perv moments ?
It barely had any in the manga but had a few more pervy moments in the anime, and when it did happen it was mostly with Roshi for comedy moments. I'm really glad Toriyama stayed away from fanservice too.
Re: Do you think Dragon Ball had too much perv moments ?
Honestly?
Yes. But only because the Kame Sen'nin "Wooooaaaah, he almost molested her! Wacky!" gags are among the least funny in the series, except when they're the setup for larger gags a la Launch's introduction, the acquisition of the third Dragon Ball, or that micro-brand filler (which, actually, as mentioned earlier, is pretty borderline). The anime tends to fall back on this more, which is unfortunate, because by and large Dragon Ball tends to be pretty good with its female characters, especially for its genre and era.
Oh, yeah, and Oolong straight-up intending to drug and molest Bulma in the opening arc is definitely not a decision that should have been made, despite how hilarious the rest of the events it leads to are.
By comparison, not enough humor centered around Goku balls.

Wasn't he JUST feeling up her boobs or something? I remember reading that, and not getting the impression that he would do anything more than that...and of course, that's still totally unacceptable behavior...but you make it sound like he was going to rape her or somethingCipher wrote:Oh, yeah, and Oolong straight-up intending to drug and molest Bulma in the opening arc is definitely not a decision that should have been made, despite how hilarious the rest of the events it leads to are.

Yamcha accidentally felt up her boobs. We don't know what Oolong was gonna do to her.

...I don't think it was going to be rape, whatever it was. This is the same dude that got bossed around by all those girls he kidnapped after all. It seems to me that, at best, he'd snap some photos and, I don't know, keep them in his room for alone time or something. Which of course is still a filthy way of living, but, honestly, if I was going to be ok with full frontal nudity (which I'm not), I don't see how this would be the straw that broke the camel's back. Certainly not worse than some Anime's habits of trying to make 10 year olds into sex symbols, at any rate.Kid Buu wrote:Yamcha accidentally felt up her boobs. Manga-wise it isn't too bad, anime it has a bit more but still isn't what I would call too much.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball had too much perv moments ?
I never had a problem with it.It would have been too much if it continued like the first arc. Roshi's antics are basically his character, the stereotypical dirty old man, the scene when he shrinks himself and tries to spy on the Bulma on the toilet was one of my favorites. Bulma's early antics weren't drastic, offering to touch her butt or show her panties for a dragonball only for her to find out she wasn't wearing panties later on, it was funny and childish perverted humour.
The only thing i can see people having a problem with, like mentioned before, is Oolong drugging girls. With his character it would be assumed he did something sexual to them, i am not saying something as drastic as rape though. I didn't have a problem with it, but i can see why people would.

That doesn't really change anything, and definitely isn't deserving of a "just."Fionordequester wrote:Wasn't he JUST feeling up her boobs or something? I actually prefer the U.S. story edit to that episode, which had Oolong trying to steal the Dragon Balls instead. It didn't really work that well with the footage, but that would have been a preferable setup to the rest of the antics.
Re: Do you think Dragon Ball had too much perv moments ?
Now that I'm older, I do cringe when I see Roshi hitting on Bulma, knowing she was a teenager and he's a dirty old man. That's my only complaint but for the rest, the perv moments were a part of DB and didn't bother me. DB wasn't as serious and so focused on fighting compared to. DBZ.

I hear you. But between that, and rape, it's still the lesser of two evils, right? That doesn't really change anything, and definitely isn't deserving of a "just."

Just a hint, when you have to compare something to rape to make it "the lesser"...it's still really fuckin' bad!Fionordequester wrote:I hear you. But between that, and rape, it's still the lesser of two evils, right? That doesn't really change anything, and definitely isn't deserving of a "just."

Indeed. And thinking about it now, I can see how it's back breaking material, especially if you don't know any better, and believe that the whole story is going to be like that. It's stuff like this that makes me not like Dragon Ball as much as Dragon Ball Z.Rocketman wrote:Just a hint, when you have to compare something to rape to make it "the lesser"...it's still really fuckin' bad!

In real life feeling up a girl without her permission is wrong and could cause sever emotional damage. But in DB it's nothing more than silly antics. The characters barely give a crap, so why should we? Did Bulma need counciling after accidentally showing her privates? Was Chi Chi haunted for the rest of her life after being felt up by Roshi? No. What's serious in RL isn't serious in fiction. It's like complaining that the Road Runner cartoons treat injuries too lightly.
Re: Do you think Dragon Ball had too much perv moments ?
I begin to wonder how North American/English (as all other territories live and breathe anime) kids who were born in the late 90's/early 2000's view DragonBall. Pretty much all types of violence have been omitted from their tv shows, also the showing of flesh, and most of the budget to do anything worth watching.
Little by little, I think the censorship is climbing into the ranks of telling us what we can watch, and instilling a sense of what is socially acceptable in society.
For me, growing up as a kid born in the early 90's, we had InuYasha, Sailor Moon, DragonBall Z, Yuyu Hakusho -- all these shows had their perverted moments, so I was used to it. It didn't affect the way I socialized with other people, and at the time, these were deemed socially acceptable, and considered 'Kids Stuff' regardless of the panty shots, or blood gushing, or innuendo.
But then, something happened, and children started watching dancing cucumbers, and a talking sponge, I think it all went downhill after that.
Now we have low-budget tv shows without any soul, or direction.
We went from Dexter's Laboratory, Angry Beavers, Madeline, and powrpuff girls to johnny test, dora the explorer, and suddenly the I.Q. of many children went from 120 to 0...
I like kid vs cat though, violence is suitable.
I think Ero-Sennin is probably the depiction of a stereotypical old man, but even that is too much for kids to handle nowadays.

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.

Speaking of being traumatized by Roshi's advances, it reminded me of a scene in the Namek arc in the hospital when Master Roshi groped a female nurse and she started screaming.
It was funny and disturbing at the same time.

Counter-point: Fiction informs our views of the world, and chalking things up to humor, especially with young audiences, can diminish the severity of very damaging practices in the real world, especially ones so often disregarded in the first place.ringworm128 wrote:In real life feeling up a girl without her permission is wrong and could cause sever emotional damage. Again, Dragon Ball's pretty good with its female characters for its age and genre. I don't even mind some (some) of Kame Sennin's antics. But it is one of the few elements of the series I think is overplayed and truly harmful.

This. Totally this. Very nice summary of what I've tried to say in the past, but couldn't seem to say without sounding odd or weird (at least, in my head). And then there's the fact that, as an illustrator of naked women, it seems to me that you're picturing stuff that...really, you probably shouldn't be picturing, especially if you're married.Counter-point: Fiction informs our views of the world, and chalking things up to humor, especially with young audiences, can diminish the severity of very damaging practices in the real world, especially ones so often disregarded in the first place.

Well, I, uh, wouldn't go that far at all and actually think you're conflating two different things, one of which is actually harmful and one of which is an individual moral/sexual prerogative.Fionordequester wrote:And then there's the fact that, as an illustrator of naked women, it seems to me that you're picturing stuff that...really, you probably shouldn't be picturing, especially if you're married.
There's nothing wrong with drawing a naked woman (inherently; putting a character on display just to titillate fans is a whole different ballgame, and not for anything to do with the author's marital status). There's something a little bit wrong with playing off molestation as throw-away humor.
I'm looking at you, SO MANY ANIME/MANGA PROPERTIES.
