DBZ Memorable Action Show For 90s Kids?
This is more towards guys outside my generation, but thought I'd ask if anyone here born in 1988 or after, or guys who know folks of that age group, would you say DBZ is one of the great action cartoons of the time it was on US tv that is really remembered by that age group? For example, you know how 80s boys like myself tend to often look back and talk about how we used to be into He-Man, Thundercats, G.I. Joe, G1 Transformers, Voltron, MASK, and the original TMNT and despite whether those shows have aged well or not, (often not) still will speak fondly of them and when seeing them say, "Ah, my childhood" and such. Was wondering if guys of younger age group thought that of the dub and speak fondly of it and other action cartoons on at the same time as it. And whether you dislike the dub now or not, and are of said age group, have any of your peers who aren't big into anime think of the dub in that way?

In Europe the two most popular action animation series were Knights of the Zod.. Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball (Z primary and then GT & DB), but to be honest I've never been a big fan of Saint Seiya mainly because I didn't bother to catch up with it when it was on air plus there ain't a complete series release with English subs even now (FUNimation, please?).
Both series have pretty catchy BGMs and still to this day I remember "Pegasus Fantasy" like I heard it back then in the 90's.

"NEW VIDEO" is currently releasing an English subbed (only?) set of Saint Seiya for the first 73 episodes.dbboxkaifan wrote:I've never been a big fan of Saint Seiya mainly because I didn't bother to catch up with it when it was on air plus there ain't a complete series release with English subs even now (FUNimation, please?).

Actually, if you look closer, it says DUBBED, not subbed. New dub, perhaps?

I always imagine MMPR to be the most memorable action show for 90's kids. MMPR came out first in the US and I remember it being more popular then DBZ. You could not escape from MMPR from 1993 - 1996 since it was everywhere. The show had a shit ton of merchandise and a big budget movie back in 1995. The Zyuranger suits became so iconic over the years and MMPR became apart of 90's pop culture next to TMNT and Pokemon.

Re: DBZ Memorable Action Show For 90s Kids?
I didn't find out about Dragonball Z until the 2000's and it was because of my cousins. They would draw them all the time, and I thought they looked really cool, so I would draw them memory at home. All my friends had the figures, and that's how I found out they were into them. All I watched action-wise was the Bruce Timm DC animate universe, like Batman TAS, Superman TAS, and the Batman TNBA, and then the Marvel cartoons. Once Batman went to cable, I didn't really have any shows to look forward to, but my uncle would record some them for me, since he had cable! I was never in on what was popular at school, and it was years later I would get to see the shows, when they would come out with those random episode sets of shows at the library. I'm glad though, because my first time watching Dragonball Z was last year with KAI. I started with the Ocean dub and hated it, so if it wasn't for KAI, I would have not gotten into this series!

Well for me personally yes DBZ was the de facto action show growing up in the 90's and early 2000's. The way Funimation and Toonami advertised the show even made it more-so the action fest that it appeared to be in my young pubescent eyes.

They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

Not from the US, but in my country, DBZ was the action show of the '90s. It was such a phenomenon that even college students would miss class to gather at the bar just to watch the latest episode.

DragonBall, Z, GT, Sailor Moon, Medabots, Gundam Wing, Inu Yasha, Flying Witch Delivery kiki, YUyu Hakusho, G Gundam, Escaflowne, Cardcaptors, Rouroni Kenshin. All of these were the top action shows, and what do they all have in common? They were action Anime! Ranma 1/2, tenchi muyo.

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.

DBZ got a late start in the US. It took a year and half for it be popular and DBZ didn't finish off until 2003. 90's kids snobs will be like "DBZ is 2000's, not 90's"

Absolutely. I'm 21 and If I say "Dragon Ball" or "Goku" or "Saiyan" to anyone my age they'll almost certainly know exactly what I mean.

I think most of those people are people born from 1986 - 1994 or 1995 grew up watching DBZ on toonami. I would imagine people after middle school in the late 90's didn't watch DBZ because they were too old for it.

Re: DBZ Memorable Action Show For 90s Kids?
Besides Pokemon I'de say Dragon Ball Z was the most memorable show for people my age and I'm 21. I'm sure it would be the most popular if it had been on free UK channels like Pokemon and Digimon were (and if there had been DVD's released in England while the show was still on TV) but regardless it's still fondly remembered. It becomes difficult to judge the UK fanbase specifically because I've noticed people younger than myself in the 17 to 19 age range who were either too young to remember it's TV run or weren't allowed to watch it and so they saw the show via the internet years later or now, through the orange bricks. The fanbase here is quite fragmented to say the least.

It seem like MMPR, TMNT, Pokemon and DBZ were the most popular for people around my age as well. I know TMNT started in the 80's, but the show ran from 1987 - 1996. The show still had new episodes made despite it's popularity started to die down by 1993 (I blame the third movie for sucking so bad).

Re: DBZ Memorable Action Show For 90s Kids?
I second the MMPR thing. Power Rangers was truly a worldwide phenomenon.
Dragonball Z over here in the UK was really only popular amongst kids who had cable or satellite, which was quite costly back in the day. By the time most people had satellite TV, I believe Dragonball Z was pretty much into the Buu saga. It was big, but it could have been bigger had it been on terrestrial TV. Why it was never on terrestrial, I do not know. Perhaps too violent for a cartoon? Bringing up TMNT, I believe Michelangelo's nunchucks were censored on the UK broadcast.
