Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Regardless whether it's bland or not, it's still part of Dragonball and as a collector I'd let like to get everything and I don't really consider something being tacked on to a video game an official release
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Agreed with samuraix123 on this one. That and, I don't exactly have a 360 and even if I did, 'DBZ for Kinect' isn't high on my priority of games to get (though I do want to eventually, just because I want to own every DBZ game that came out stateside. I know, I'm obsessed...and also far, far behind on this goal). Bland as it may be, it's still a part of the franchise that I'd love to be able to own on DVD. Same goes for 'Plan to Destroy the Super Saiyans'.
Besides, I bought Evolution on DVD. Clearly I'm a Dragon Ball whore. *sobs*

Owning them on DVD would be a downgrade considering they're available in High Definition.Gyt Kaliba wrote:Agreed with samuraix123 on this one. The Episode of Bardock is good for one thing, seeing Bardock turn Super Saiyan for a moment.

What do you mean by "original broadcast audio"?
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Put me down as one more person not buying these.Gaffer Tape wrote:Eh, speak for yourself. I for one have no intention of lining FUNimation's coffers with money for their pitiful table scraps. And so far... they're not even getting CLOSE.samuraix123 wrote:And even if it does we'll still keep buying their other crap releases hahaha
I do think they offer a reasonable improvement from the orange bricks. I do think they'd be watchable.
But I have zero incentive to pay to own the series again with all these sets' faults and when I already own both the Dragon Boxes and Kai on Blu-Ray. I'm maxed out. The only thing they could possibly sell me on for Z again would be a truly stellar 4:3 HD restoration, and even then, it wouldn't be a day one purchase.

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Wow, I'm surprised you're not caught up with this, unless you're asking whether we're talking about the Japanese or US broadcast audio. In the former case, pretty much, the audio used in most official release use poorly digitized optical tracks which create an overly muffled effect in the audio, making it sound more dated than it actually is. The original run of the Dragon Ball obviously used audio from master tapes, which sounds much clearer than any official Dragon Ball release to this day. The reason for the shift in audio quality is because Toei more than likely threw their audio master tapes away like they had a tendency to do with most of their running anime. However, there are people who have recordings of the entire original run of the Dragon Ball series with said audio, including kei17, who is in the process of deciding who should handle the tape recordings so we may see it in an official Dragon Ball release, or at least have the audio properly stored away. Great images, I made this comparison.

Again while the shot from the season blu rays does indeed look atrocious not even the properly remastered level sets would have stood a chance here. The Kai shot is from one of the 35mm episodes a source that Funimation doesn't have.kidglov3s wrote:Great images, I made this comparison.

FUNimation could have at least gotten the colours right but not even that. :-/kidglov3s wrote:Great images, I made this comparison.

The colours on the Level BDs were very similar to the ones on the Orange Bricks & Season BDs.

This 35 mm frame, scanned at 4K and downsized to 2K resolution, without any kind of filtering, would look even better than Kai shot...qjz123 wrote:Again while the shot from the season blu rays does indeed look atrocious not even the properly remastered level sets would have stood a chance here. Hell only knows how raw 16 mm scan would look compared to Kai... This blurriness* is caused by idiotic DVNR and/or other moronic filters they are using.
* - I mean bluriness on the season sets!

No, they don't. It's simply embarrassing. Nobody should have to release Dragon Ball that many times and still not get it right.Metalwario64 wrote:But then, this is FUNimation we're talking about. Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Kai is blurry because it's put through similar DNR processes that these Season sets were put through. Difference being, whoever worked on Kai actually knew how to do it tastefully and had access to higher quality masters.
At least with Kai, you can bump your sharpness up a couple of notches and it looks absolutely perfect.

If you were to remove the grain from the Level footage it would end up being blurry/DNR'd too and with Kai they tried to stay consistent with their PQ even if that meant going from great to good to average.qjz123 wrote:True Kai did look very blurry in comparison to the level sets

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Kai definitely looks better than the season blu rays but no matter how much you bump up the sharpness your not going to get back the detail lost here http://i.minus.com/iSSQDYkWwmJ54.png on Kame house. Now that's not to say Kai is all bad you do get much better dark details.AjayLikesGaming wrote:Kai is blurry because it's put through similar DNR processes that these Season sets were put through. Really, those comparisons just remind me how orgasmic the Levels look.
