I don't hear the rasp, if it's there, it's slight.
Dover, I get what you mean. As bad as DBZ's dub is, the music does kind of go with it. However, if they had gone with a faithful dub, I think the original score would've fit just fine.
Not sure if I would characterize Henderson as generic. A voice doesn't have to be distinctive to be great. Her acting is what made her a good choice for Gohan. I'll take that over a distinctive but terrible actor anyday of the week.

Yeah, that's what I meant with it fitting Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Kai (well, Yamamoto, anyway). They had the original music in mind while doing those. I'm not sure what it is, but something just seems really off without it, especially during the silences.ABED wrote:I don't hear the rasp, if it's there, it's slight.

I think Colleen Clinkenbeard's Gohan is much more natural sounding. I cringe whenever Nadolny tries to force a laugh as Gohan. Colleen's performance is much more natural in this scene for example http://youtu.be/P7P6ifM5PrI?t=8m52s vs Nadolny http://youtu.be/h3RV6Y8BjL8?t=3m50s. Another thing about Colleen's Gohan is that her voice actually ages as her character ages for example Colleen at the start of the series http://youtu.be/CIferoiX4hg?t=7m14s then her voice during the Freeza saga gets deeper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3SHydb3fFo then her voice post ROSAT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7P6ifM5 ... be&t=8m52s . Whereas Nadolny's voice barely changes from the start of the series to the cell games. Nadolny at the start of the series http://youtu.be/LFqXzj7kxAo?t=13m55s then post ROSAT http://youtu.be/h3RV6Y8BjL8?t=3m50s .

Re: Was Stephanie Nadolny Really That Bad As Gohan?
To be perfectly honest, I prefer Nadolny to Clickenbeard. Not that Clickenbeard is bad because she obviously is putting a lot of effort into it but I think Nadolny nailed the character better. I definitely like her Kid Goku better, by leaps and bounds but I have always preferred Nadolny as Gohan as well. It is one of my problems with Kai; as much improved as the dialogue is, I just can't get behind Clickenbeard's voice.
A while ago, someone mentioned that every English voice for Gohan has been so vastly different from the original that the sound of "your" Gohan is really a matter of preference and I still believe that to be true. I can see how people would dislike Nadolny's rasp, her laugh and her overall tone as being flat but I can also see how people could interpret Clickenbeard as whiney, feminine and one-dimensional. Frankly, I see more emotion in Nadolny's tone than I do in Clickenbeard's. This is all just my personal interpretation and I could easily see how another could view it entirely the opposite. Someone else mentioned how Nadolny seemed to bring out Gohan's innocent and happy side and I am inclined to agree. Granted, she comes across as too old in some instances, namely in the Saiyan saga, but I think the emotion behind it sounds more "kid" than Clickenbeard's. I don't really hear a lot of "joy" or "innocence" out of Clickenbeard. I hear sadness and anger but not that playful innocence that I think both Goku and Gohan (and yes, also Goten) have in common.

She's grating, annoying, whiny, and in general pretty sub-par- all qualities that make up the core of Gohan's character.

The one who voiced Gohan during Kai deserves to fry.

This is so beyond inappropriate. You're more than welcome to offer up criticisms of anything regarding the production of the series you want, but personal attacks like this are disgusting and will not be tolerated.Gokuden wrote:The one who voiced Gohan during Kai deserves to fry.

I'll give Nadolny this much *Bane impersonation* What a lovely singing voice.
Her rendition of the second ending theme of Yu Yu Hakusho is nice. She's a good singer, just not an actress. Her Gohan and to a greater extent is as annoying as Janice from Friends, but without being intentional or funny.

But seriously, I'm in the boat that thinks Nadolny's voice doesn't fit during the Saiyan and Freeza arcs due to the age of the character but works during the Cell arc, primarily post Room of Spirit and Time. Her voice sort of captures that awkward pubescent stage the character could have been going through at the time.

That's a bit of a random comparison to make.ABED wrote:I'll give Nadolny this much *Bane impersonation* What a lovely singing voice.

Was never huge on her Gohan, but I really didn't mind her as Goku, especially in GT.

It just seems kind of odd to compare her performance to a character from a completely unrelated show.ABED wrote:I don't know if I'd call it random, but I think it fits regardless.WittyUsername wrote:That's a bit of a random comparison to make.ABED wrote:I'll give Nadolny this much *Bane impersonation* What a lovely singing voice.

I was using a fairly well known character with a well known attribute so other people would understand how I heard another performance.

Super Sonic, I understand she may have fared well in other roles, but I came in this thread to claim that the voice of Kai Gohan is definitely not the one I like. i prefer Stephanie's voice.Super Sonic wrote:Gokuden, have you heard her other roles?
I'm ashamed, but I was traumatized by her performance, you have to understand Labrie. I don't even like kid Gohan that much, but the new voice made me hate him. I grew up with Stephanie, and I thought she had a charming personality to go along with her cute acting. I heard the new voice and was contemplating sealing my eardrums with cement, or changing the audio track, whichever was easier at the time.VegettoEX wrote:This is so beyond inappropriate. I watched the first epsiode of Fairytail in Japanese, then I moved and never got back to it. I never saw this twilight spinoff yet, maybe soon in the future.

I'm certain that if nadolny returned for Kai, she would be getting a much better reputation around here, and I'm sure she improved even in the games.
