Well, they're not completely divorced. If Head Cha La is about anything, it's about not giving up, or not letting any problem get too big. I can see some bits applying to Goku. Generally they are quite vague, but they do fit the overall mood in non-specific ways. You couldn't just swap over Cha La and Moonlight Densetsu because the songs wouldn't fit their respective series.Zackarotto wrote:Anime lyrics don't usually have anything to do with the series... I didn't realize that until I first read a translation to Cha-La.
Not all openers are so vague, though. Mystical Adventure has very specific lyrics, talking about having adventures while trying to get the Dragonballs. It even mentions a flying cloud machine. And the original opening to Pocket Monsters "Mezase Pokemon Master" is even more closely related to the show, as it's sung by Satoshi (Ash) and is about trying really hard to get lots and lots of Pokemon.
Although they still manage to throw in the mandatory weirdness. "Under that girl's skirt"? Crazy.

Ya I remember thinking when I first read those lyrics to the Pokemon song, you mean Ash is a pervert?
And I think you have a point Psy about HEAD-CHA-LA having a meaning that does go with the series, I think the lines about prefering to have a head that's empty so you can fill it with dreams, could easily be applied to Gohan and how he is made to study when he really should be allowed to be a kid. And yes the Dragonball theme does have more specific lyrics, but you'll have to tell me how a "Dossiri" applies, since as far as I know it's gibberish.

No I know he's not really. I just thought it was a weird lyric at the time. I guess it's that "mandatory weird bit" you've mentioned. Ash actually is one of my favourite kid characters from any anime. I think he's just a really sweet, cute child. And he tries so hard and really believes in his goals. I sometimes feel really sorry for him when Misty and Brock don't always support him even if he's being his usual "carried away" self.

Ash is, suprisingly, a shining exampleof Anime heroes. Because I mean if you look at quite a few other series, for example Love Hina, Please Teacher, Evangelion etc, They're all dickless cowards and you just CAN'T like them.Jerseymilk wrote:No I know he's not really. Also, Kazuma is a good hero, though a tad violent.

Love Hina and Onegai Teacher are like another fucking type of anime. The heroes are always like Kei and Keitaro (Ahh!) in those... As for Shinji, his psychotic breakdowns and cowardly moments are the main element in the story, so you have to forgive him.
Hmm, thinking about things like that, I think Akito from Nadesico was a cross between the Kei(taro?) and Shinji type characters. I wonder which category he falls under more?
Damn, I don't even know what the hell I'm talking about at this point. I think I'll stop now.

Ash is let down by a few things. He's not the brightest bulb in the box (seriously, he could walk in on his mum shagging Prof Oak, shouting "I love you Samual, that is why I am having sex with you right now, at this moment, oh sorry Ash I was just...doing the washing", and he'd believe her). He's also a greedy bastard. Which wouldn't be so bad, if he ever actually bought food. But no, he just freeloads off of everyone.
He's also under the strange impression that he's a bit of an action hero. He'll run into battle, screaming. And then he'll get his arse handed to him by the enemy Pokemon/humans. Because he's a wimp.
Oh, and he gave away Charizard. Seriously, what the fuck was up with that? Butterfree, okay. Primeape, fine. Lapras? It's voice annoyed me, so fair enough. But Charizard? CHARIZARD?
Moron.
(I'd also include the fact that it takes him roughly 5 billion years to actually travel the distance between gyms, but they seem to have partially fixed that with Advanced Generation. Woo!)

Well, you definitely have a point about giving away Charizard , that ticked me off too, as well as getting rid of Squirtle and especially Bulbasaur!
And ya he ain't bright but, he has such enthusiasm. Naruto's the same way. He's not bright, he can be obnoxious, is too impulsive, and has a chip on his shoulder, but he's so passionate about being the best, I think he's great. And Kakashi always smiles to himself when watching him train. Where would the story be without these underdog characters? That's what these types of stories are about after all. That try really hard and not give up, believe in yourself, etc. They're total archetypes really.

Well, Ash chose to give away the most powerful and cool Pokemon he had. Even though he had brought it back from the brink of death, forming a bond with it, and then raised it right up to it's final evolution. And by the way, didn't that foolish boy give away a Scyther too?PsyLiam wrote:And they all hilariously eat lots of food!
Well, some of them do. What's up with that?
Giving away Charizard or Deciding to stay dead because otherwise the villians that attack Earth will...not. Or something. Which was worse, anyway?
Goku chose to leave Gohan and a pregnant Chi-Chi (although I doubt he was aware she was at the time), and stay dead so no more enemies would come after him and put the world in jeopardy, but who cares if his two sons have to grow up without a father. A noble idea, except 7 years later, some more thugs come! And they aren't even there for him. I think everyone should vote on this.

Satoshi never had a Scyther. The dub said that he gave one away, but they were confused. Or possibly the original Japanese version said that too. Regardless, he never had one. Kenji did (and still does, as far as I know), but Satoshi has only given away his Butterfree, Primape, Lapras, Charizard, Squirtle, and with Advanced Generation, pretty much every other Pokemon he's ever had. He'd have given away Pikachu if the little mouse hadn't come running back.
Happy, B-Kun? And no, I'm not going to look up the Japanese name for the Pokemon, and neither will I be impressed if someone else knows them (although Bulbasaur's Fungushi, or something like that, right?)
Scyther is hardcore though. And Scizor is one of the few Johto Pokemon that improves on a Kanto one.

I swear there was more. AND YES THERE WAS A SCYTHER! Darr'gakh!
I don't want to dig up that old topic. Okay, so Ash was in some place with lots of pokémon. He had to catch one, right? For some competition or something.
Some kid is being attacked by a scyther, so Ash creams it and catches it. It's the best thing anyone is caught, so he wins something, and gives scyther to the kid. I think he also gave his prize away. I'm telling you, that kid is madness.
I might be mixing two episodes, or maybe seven, but all I know is that he had a scyther, for one episode. Maybe you missed it.
