Just load the video in Aegisub and time and type from there save file Ssa very easy
Good idea. Does that work with VOB files?

If your doing this trough VHS tape, defiantly go with the notepad method. Also, depending on the quality, it can be a bit hard to read the subtitles

I only have the Dragon Boxes to time them for, though I am interested in the FUNi releases

It seems that I've missed a lot about this topic in the last couple of days.
What is exactly happening? Are you going to digitalise the VHS tapes? Time the subtitles to Dragon Boxes? Both?
Anyway, good luck :D

Thank you to those of you who sent emails telling me to check out this thread.

Please forgive me for intruding, but as the creator of those AnimePast pages chronicling the history of Dragonball fansubs, I feel that I have some responsibility for the number of younger fans who are interested in the fansubs these days...

I would like to echo what VegettoEX says, and point out that selling fansub DVDs is both slightly dangerous from a legal perspective as well as against what might be called the fan's ideal of free distribution of material to those who cannot otherwise view/obtain it.

If I may, I would like to introduce a potential alternative to the selling of fansub DVDs: Freely distributed scripts timed to official releases.

Freely distributed scripts, I feel, would be both reasonable and worthwhile, as they would enable the archival and distribution of historic material in a not-for-profit, non-invasive setting. I think that this would benefit the world of Dragonball fandom at large, as anyone who wanted to see/experience the fansubs could do so free of charge and without the possibility of legal problems for anyone involved.

I received a few scripts from eledoremassis02 some time ago (thank you!), which I've put up onto the site here. Please take a look.

Would anyone be interested in helping? Please get in touch with me if you'd like to work on typing things up, or if you yourself have any fansubs on tape that we could put to good use. I would be happy to host more scripts up on the site and get a nice collection up for all to see. If there is any interest in this I can create a new thread.

Take care...
I was reverse searching google images & I came across this thread you started, I couldn't help but be a little bit confused

Aren't these bootlegs?

Its just a little hypocritical, I don't get it.

Anyways if you have any copies of those, let me know I would buy a couple.

I would say no, the VCD format was (is?) a legitimate and popular format in those Asian countries.

That's a question that really can't be easily answered, on one hand the actual discs and inserts themselves could very well be bootleg (VCD's are probably pretty easy to pirate, at least when compared to DVD so it's not out of the realm of possibility), but the actual video and audio these VCD's are sourced from, on the other hand, is more than likely an official source since it's well known that a Malaysian company known as Speedy, produced an English dub of the DBZ movies, (which seems to indicate that Speedy had managed to acquire distribution rights from Toei for Malaysian territories), so the question as to whether the VCD's are bootleg is really anybody's guess.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

These dubs are different than the Malayasian DVDs you see now which just uses FUNi's audio and sometimes badly compressed singles video.

There is a good chance (or at least a grey area) on legitimacy of these VCDs (HK also offers VCD's a cheaper counterparts to DVDs) VHS fansubs on the other hand are 100% known to be bootlegs.

gray area, blue area, green area. Were all Sayians here..

Anyways, I wanted to give you guys an update on my project. Its kinda cool actually, before I started this I hadnt done anything creative & fun for years. I got really motivated by this site, anime past and the still alive and kicking dbz community. I needed this, it was like a flash back to back in the day when everyone made tribute music videos and stuff. I missed that.

So, update. This is version 1 of a fully functioning rendered dvd. Now this is still incomplete and you will see. I have a lot of tweaking to do and have more ideas I want to add. I'll take a break for a day or two and come back fresh. Constructive criticism is always welcomed. Do me a favor and watch the whole thing its only like a 6 min demo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THJex5Dlltk 720p version

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FzUPn1FCs0 low quality version ** Better version will be posted above when its done uploading.

I have been working my ass off on this. This is not what I do for a living, its barely even a hobby. But I just read and watch tutorials for hours and hours and then the trial and error, its definitely a learning experience. But I think when its all said and done. Its gonna be pretty sweet..

Ah man, the audio quality is driving me mad! That sounds great considering the source. Seems you have some good tapes lying around. What are you using to transfer them? I know youtube can be misleading but there appears to be a fair amount of digital compression on your footage.

I'd ditch the Cha-La music on the menus but that may be just me.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
The movies are originally about 50gigs per file, I've gotten them down to about 3gigs with a minimal amount of quality loss, thank dende for AV forums this stuff is like an art, it really is. There is a little over 4gigs on a dvd so it was a challenge to get all this stuff on a DVD.

Everything was challenge.

While some of these things may seem random, while working on this I realized how in an instance all these little quirky things can just fade away. Even from the internet, fansubs made me realize that. That's why everyone threw em out, they were every where then there was better dvds & whatever. Everybody just thought these things would be here forever. I read youtube is going to delete years worth of their old videos, they are practically buried as it is. There is not even an option to search oldest first, I looked for it, asked google, I read up on it, looked for a work around to search for the oldest videos posted. Its damn near impossible.

So in an instance, all these cool things like music videos, flash animations, tributes and commercials could be gone. So that was my thought process for the extras I added. The Gohan going ss2 against cell in stereo sound VHS quality is my favorite moment throughout the whole series. I saw it through a fansub and I fuckin dont have the tape anymore, I used to watch it over and over, that song, that rage.. I'll never forget it..

Were very fortunate to have have this site & the web master who has kept a part of our youth alive for so long. I did a lot of research & digging while working on this stuff.

I'm talkin like 25 30 pages on google searches using all different obscure db related query's, different search engines, wayback machine, old web rings.. All of it..

There was but one constant that kept showing up over and over, no matter how far back I went, or how random and obscure some of these forum and websites were, this site right here & the webmaster VegettoEX were apart of it. Weather being referenced to in some way or linking to it. This site has been the corner stone through it all..

I couldn't even imagine how much of the fandom has been preserved through the staffs projects, even though I know you guys don't like me & think I'm like a hustler or something. I very much appreciate all of this.

Really digging this and love the ideas for the extra (shame youtube is deleting them)

On another note, seeing Gohan got SSJ2 in that quality make me feel a whole lotta nostalgia

Are discs going to be dual layered? Also here's a music video that I remember https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOA_n4fSvgU

Also, maybe a VHS covers/VHS gallery would be cool to have as well :)

Some other clips and things if you'd like to use them ^^

If we hated you, this thread would've been deleted and you'd have been banned. I like your project but you surely know which companies are monitoring this site. Besides, if we don't buy the official products anime will go down. Although I'm not sure how much your low video quality fansubs would hurt the official product sales.

I'm gonna tell you the truth, I just looked up duel layer dvd, I had didn't even know what they were. lol But the 8.5gbs is a lot of space to play with so, I'm definitely going to look into it more..

I dont remember that music video in particular, I remember there being a lot of linkin park, korn, limp bizkit videos stuff like that. Deffinitly early 2000s stuff lol.

I love that idea of the vhs cover gallery, I wanted to do something similar but there was just no more space, I had an extra feature rendered and everything with the covers to the 2 early live action dbz movies one from korea one from japan & some weird knock off animated movie that linked to clips of each one.

So yea, I like the vhs cover idea a lot.

:)

People who would even consider spending anything on something like this are the same people who have bought the fansubs then the series on VHS then DVD then DVD re-release then the DVD re re release then Blue Ray then Kai and will keep buying it until every foreseeable way to repackage it is exhausted. Only real deal fans want to see these, its obscure fandom ya know. It has absolutely zero effect on any sort of financial scale, its a curiosity.
