Verbal Tics You've Picked Up from DBZ?

Post by Fionordequester » Sun Mar 09, 2014 5:30 pm

Personally, for me, I think I was actually most influenced in speaking style by Sean Schemmel's Goku, who I still really love, and basically idolized as a kid. There's a thing he does in how he speaks at 2:12...

Where he speaks really enthusiastically, and then goes really soft, which I always loved. I sometimes do that myself, when I'm either expressing really high energy or excitement, or talking with my little cousins or other similarly young children. So how about you guys?

You mean you deliver your lines really forced and strained?

Oh c,moOoOoON! I just felt like sharing what I loved!

Really though, he can sound however he wants as long as he brings me pure, unironic joy with his performance!

It's best generally to try and not let penguin's Schemmel allergy get to you too much, if you can - it's never gonna go away (and that was almost a more playful jab than usual, at least in how I took it).

Hmm...well, I'm not sure it's really what you'd call a 'verbal tic', but I have picked up a weird word-that's-not-a-word over time, and it kinda goes back to DBZ. A few years back, after starting to get more into the Japanese version of the franchise, I picked up a habit of typing 'Ossu!' as my greeting to friends online (I'm not so nerdy as to have said it to people in real life though :P ). A few of my other friends that were also into DBZ started to pick up on it, so as a weird compromise/attempt to stay unique in my greetings, I ended up combining it with 'Hey' and ending up with 'Heyossu!'. That eventually died out and stopped amusing us all...but for some reason, I have since been left always saying 'Heyo' to people...and that one has bled into real life a bit.

So...that's a thing, kinda?

Not quite a "verbal" tic, but I'm 100% incapable of typing out the word "freeze" without first typing "freeza" then backspacing then correcting.

Including in that sentence right there where I very specifically was trying to type it out to talk about it.

Oh, don't worry. That's part of why I responded with a joke (writing out "come on" in the same way Sean Schemmel said it in the video).

It's not a verbal tic, but I do tend to do that smirk where one side of the face contorts more than the other, Vegeta-style, at times.

I literally have Piccolo Daimao's laugh, which by extension is pretty much Piccolo Jr's laugh too. I don't have to be drunk to do it though. :P

Due to Simmons translation I've become accustomed to always expect the honourifics and even when they're not there I still read as if they were. It's like on the manga it says "Light of Death!" but I read it as "Mankankosappo!".

I used to say Friеza as Fry, but it comes out the same way as Freeza as the original name is spelt Fûriza and if you cut it down to Friza it sounds the same as Friеza.

I've picked up the different speaking styles of the characters in Japanese DB and DBZ. Because of that, I have a problem with switching between different levels of politeness within the same conversation. I'm trying to fix it, though.

Goku's "ain't" "gonna" kinda talk. Dunno why I say words like that but I do now.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

I try to stop myself from saying "ain't" as much as I can, but "gonna" is a regular part of my speech patterns, as are a lot of other similar...I don't even know what you'd call it. Talking and using words just slightly wrong like that though.

I think that has more to do with where I live than it does Dragon Ball though.

Girugirugiru

I giru haven't picked up any particular girugiru verbal tics Pan, danger! from Dragon Ball.

Although on a more serious note, I did kind of pick up Goku's two fingered Instant Transmission/Shunkan Idou gesture as a way of waving goodbye though.

Not entirely, nope. I'm still breaking myself of "y'all" for "you all" too, but thankfully I caught myself saying it before it got too ingrained.

Reminds me, though this is also not strictly Dragon Ball, and is more from anime in general - I've picked up the 'facepalm' too. Not really like slamming my face into my hand hard, but if I'm exasperated enough, I have caught myself just putting my hand over my eyes and shaking my head.

No, but I occasionally find myself reciting Piccolo's dub speech after fusing with Nail when I'm preparing for something

At work when someone asks if I'm capable of a hard task, I'll usually say "Of course! This wasn't even my final form."

And when I fail miserably at it I'll be like "Actually....it was." So whenever we need really heavy lifting or something that requires a lot of physical unpleasantness my manager just tells me to go final form.
