Tibits from the Dragon Books?
I've heard some interesting new stuff from the Dragon Books (the booklets of the Dragon Boxes), like Cold having more forms, and Gohan losing to Dabra because of his inferior skill. What other new in-universe information are there?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I've been wondering about this myself, do you know if this same content has been published in any other media?

I've been meaning to do a thorough sweep of my DBZ Dragon Books and make a thread of all the interesting stuff I find, but I haven't gotten around to it. Mayhaps I have a new mini-project for this week.

Re: Tibits from the Dragon Books?
Which Dragon Box Z specifically, the US or the original Japanese? They both had Dragon Books.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: Tibits from the Dragon Books?
My understanding was that the US release was almost a direct translation and therefore because of that it had some awkwardness in its wording and verbiage, but if they are different in terms of content rather than just size and visuals I'd be more interested in whichever has more information.dbboxkaifan wrote:Which Dragon Box Z specifically, the US or the original Japanese? Yep, all reports I remember say that the seven FUNimation DBZ Dragon Books are pretty much a straight translation of the two Japanese ones.

Re: Tibits from the Dragon Books?
Still, it would be illegal to share them as they've got their official releases and I doubt anyone would scan them risking the chance of ruining the pages by doing so.
I personally wouldn't do it, although I did scan a few pages off of RtDE book.

Hmm, I don't think anyone here is asking for scans of them, just what new/interesting information was in them.

I've been working on that (among many other things). For all the Japanese Dragon Boxes. Expect translations.... Eventually.

Re: Tibits from the Dragon Books?
I have all of the English Dragon Books but I never suspected any of them of containing any information I hadn't known before. I'll go through them when I have a chance and see if I can find anything. I haven't spent too much time with them even considering I've had them since 2009 and on.

I mean, whether Jesus is real or not, he - he's had a bigger impact on the world than any of us have. And the same can be said for Bugs Bunny and - and Superman and Harry Potter. They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

The Dragon Box: The Movies Dragon Book said Broly transformed out of sadness rather than anger. But it doesn't say what he was sad about.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I used Toriyama-sensei's design as-is. However, his second-stage form has been arranged to be quite macho. I came up with it through talks with the director, that one should be able to tell his strength from his appearance. I drew him on the sad image that, in contrast to Goku, who becomes a Super Saiyan through the power of rage, Broli's sorrow grows until he runs amok.
