Hmm, these are some good points. One must ask "what is thy purpose, dub?". Well, it is to make something watchable to those who don't understand the language of origin. Do I think that most English dubs in general have gone too far? Yes. Do I hate them for that? No, not really. Well, it depends. I'm heavily opposed to censoring, but I'll still always watch the English dub first when I see an anime (That way I can get blown away when I see the original ).

On the subject of replacement scores, I do admit that Faulconer's music in particular could have been placed better. Some tracks were horribly underused. Also, does anyone know the very first example of a replacement score in history? I've been trying to research this, but can't find much. There isn't even a trope page for this, barring Home Releases. The earliest example I could find was Godzilla vs. King Kong.

Would Funi's Dragon Ball had been better if it had been dubbed nowadays? Oh, yes. And Kai is a perfect example of that. That's why I still hope to the impossible that Toei will do a proper "Dragon Ball Kai without the Z" covering Pilaf to Piccolo.

I'm not sure where you get this idea that the majority of English dubs are a butchery of the original product. Almost every dub produced in the last decade is, at the very least, accurate. The acting and casting may be questionable, but they keep the music and the scripts are either the same or had changes that served the show (Panty And Stocking's dub took its fair share of liberties, but not only did the original creators encourage this, the changes fit with the characters and tone). The kind of stuff you would see in DBZ's dub is almost unheard of nowadays. The only time I see it happen is with children's anime like Digimon Fusion.

Panty & Stocking I saw that one. I was laughing my head off there. I think they even made up a few curse words. You do make a point that this doesn't happen much anymore, which is great. So, if anyone ever makes a Mario anime, I don't have to worry about the dub being butchered beyond belief.

Like I said, I like to look at most things positively, so I mostly just see the good things about even the worst dubs. I do agree that replacement scores really shouldn't exist, but I'm still happy with what we got. We Americans are the only ones in the world who can choose between two soundtracks at will in Z and GT. That's a pretty nice luxury, actually.

Also, I make it clear that I do not have anything against the original at all. I haven't seen it yet, but I will. But in the meantime, I do greatly respect it as the pure original version.

I like the Boo arc much better in the Funimation dub. I hated the sexual humor with the Old KAI and Goku, that I couldn't enjoy any of it once it got to that part. The offering of groping in exchange for favors, "dirty steamy magazines", and Goku saying his sons' weren't as handsome as him, turned be off, and I hated his character, and just was miserable watching it. It's a shame because I loved everything prior to it. Vegito and the Piccolo fused Super Boos bored me, whereas in the dub, they were some of my favorite fights and really fun dialogue exchanges.

That didn't bug me. I problem was that I felt Goku was completely innocent in early Dragon Ball and didn't know any better, and at that point Goku was no longer that naive and matured in that respect. It was Nozawa's delivery that made it sound like to me that Goku enjoys dirty magazines, and that got me upset, because I like Goku is pure of heart and innocent. Then I just started nitpicking, because I was so upset. I've been going through a lot of stuff and as stupid as it sounds, the character means a lot to me. I guess, I don't have a problem with the Kaioshin, it was just that. Like in the Funimation dub it really bugged me with Oolong preying on little girls, because the voice led me to think it was someone at least in their 30's, and he was a pedophile. However, when I read the manga, I found out he was 10, and was okay with the scene and in the Japanese sub, he sounds like a little kid. I think I just started picking the it apart, and it didn't make sense why I had such a problem with it. I have a lot of health problems and I probably was twisting a lot of stuff in my head. I'm sorry guys!

I love Dragon Ball. I've watched the original Dragon Ball three times in English, once in Japanese, the original Dragon Ball Z twice, Dragon Ball Z KAI four times, the manga portion of Dragon Ball twice, the manga portion of Dragon Ball Z once, and Dragon Ball GT three times.

You're right ABED. It probably was just the mood I was in, and I was just being over sensitive. I wanted to delete my comments, because I don't feel the same way, and I don't want to be thought of as some kind of "moral guardian", like Penguintruth said.

The only flaw on the original Japanese cast is on Dragon Ball Kai because the voice acting was underperformed and nowhere near as good as they did back on DB/DBZ/DBGT/Films/Specials in the 90's.

As for dub, which dub?
- They all have something to offer and apart from the Ocean Group dub (eps 1-53, films 1-3) the Latin Spanish dub and Brazilian are my favourites for their spectacular voice acting and script accuracy.

It's clear that Goku didn't entirely understand the inappropriateness of the deal with the Old Kaioshin, or at least weighed it against THE FATE OF THE F***ING UNIVERSE, perhaps. It's just something he picked up hanging around Kamesennin.

I still think Goku's sex life must've been very "Uh, this goes where again? Oh. Yeah, that's pretty good. Hey, can we eat after this?"

There's a reason TFS uses "mouth present" as a euphemism. It's probably how Goku would understand it.

You're right penguintruth. Like I said, I was probably in a mood and had a lot of things mixed and twisted in my head. It had nothing to do with me having something against the humor and I love all the characters. Well, I don't like Bacterian, because he stinks! If there was any humor that was "dirty", Toriyama would point out the ridiculousness. The use of Kinto-un was a real clever way of showing that. I was feeling really stupid for what I wrote, but now glad, because I have that cleared up, and I will go back to it! As if I need a reason to go back! I got into the series last year and have already gone through the Dragon Ball portion of the story six times, Dragon BAll Z seven times, and portions of Dragon BAll GT three times.

Sorry, I don't know about the TFS stuff.

To try to keep it on topic, my favorite part of Dragon Ball is with Majin Vegeta. I love both the dub and sub and it's hard to choose which one I like more. I think I was much sadder seeing Vegeta sacrafice himself in Japanese, but in English, the scene when he slaps Goku had a bigger impact on me. I thought Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat were great throughout their re-match. Chris Sabat delivered such powerful emotion "WHAT CLOWN?" speech, and with his acting and the dialogue, he was able to make me sympathize him, even when he just slaughtered so many innocents at the tournament and was causing Boo's awakening. Even if I liked some parts better in the sub or dub more, they are both fantastic!

A tragedy really. Nowadays giving your characters accents is bad form but where would Chu and Jin in Yu Yu Hakusho be without their accents?

I hate when people act like there were no good English dubs before 2000. (I know YYH came after. It's just a general statement) There were plenty of good dubs back in the day even if the average is superior now.


I could go on for days about what I like about the dub so I'll just say what I don't like. This is for Dragonball (no Z)

1. Roshi's voice is good for humor but not the more important and emotional scenes he had.

2.I do miss some of the more explicit jokes that were left out. Although those are mainly the sexual jokes between Pilaf and Bulma. Stuff like Roshi having to take a shit on the plane to the tournament? That being left out is fine by me. It's not funny and it's not necessary and it makes me kind of ashamed to watch the show.

3. King Piccolo's line about fighting all over the universe.

And that's about it.

I didn't mind Chu as much but I hated that they made Jin unintelligible, so I think Jin would've been far better off. That's where he'd be.

YYH was a good dub but it still had issues.

As for DB's dub, there are lines such as Goku's and the tournament announcer's exchange about his suit.

I wasn't implying there weren't, but the overall standard was pretty awful. Stuff like Evangelion's dub, with stuffy-as-hell acting, was considered a breakthrough in the 90s because it was accurate and uncensored.

Probably just fine, thanks to the original Japanese version.

My only small gripe with the old Funi dub was that the music never stopped and now that I'm aware of some of the dub errors (Script wise) but other than that it was fine.

One thing I'm glad didnt happen was that DB didnt get the Pokemon, Sailor Moon treatment. At least no where near as much. What I'm referring to is the heavy name changing of the characters. Sure some attack names (among a few other things) were fiddled with but I'd much rather call the "Kienzan" "Destruco Disk" before I call Goku, Garry or Adam or something like that.

The Roger Moore era of Bond rocks.

It's funny because I can see certain parallels between the Bond films and the DBZ dubs. On the one hand you have the Connery, Dalton and Craig films that are pretty faithful to the character from the books and are often pretty dark. On the other hand you have the Moore films that have that awesome camp humour and corny one-liners and largely deviate from the character in the books. With DBZ you have the Z dub that is unfaithful and has camp humour and then you have the Kai dub which is much more faithful.

Personally I love most of the Bond films but favour the Connery and Moore films. Out of curiosity which era was your favourite?

I may in the minority, but my favorite bond films are Pierce Brosnan.

I wouldn't call the Connery Bond films dark. They're pretty camp by today's standards, especially the later ones. I would say my favorite Bonds are just ones I enjoy, like the early Connery films, a few of Moore's movies (I enjoyed his take more than I did Dalton's), the first two Brosnan movies, and all three movies with Daniel Craig. I like a mix of serious and fun. Brosnan is my favorite Bond, too bad only 2 of the 4 he did were good.

I agree with the analogy between Z's dub and the Bond films, but disagree with the concretes. Z's dub is at times unwatchable, but even at Bond's campiest they can be fun to watch.

That's actually my least favorite of the Connery Bond movies. The love story is terrible, and the McGuffin is a code breaking machine? Goldfinger was better.

Back to the topic, Sonny Strait has always been good as Kuririn, but got better once he dropped the Popeye on helium. It's too bad they gave him such awful dialog.
