The character roster is impressive but it isn't enough for me if the game itself is filled with broken mechanics.
Considering this is a Spike game it can't be really be much different from what we've had before from DB and non-DB fighting games developed by Spike, but who knows they might've decided to step it up.

SPOILERS: All character Transformations!!!
That feels weird.. Spike being the one who handled DB characters' transformations didn't feature them in this title. :?

Would've been interesting to see Lord Freeza impaling Luffy/Naruto/Arale/Seiya/Ryo and others but nope, maybe on "J-Stars Victory Versus 2" (?).

I've only played maybe 8 matches so far, but I'm really loving this. The controls will get some getting used to (Mostly because I haven't read what they are in English yet.), but they remind me of the Ultimate Ninja Storm system. O and Triangle are the main combo buttons, while pressing Up/R1/Some other button along with them will wield you different attacks.

My one qualm is that unlocking characters really isn't difficult. I've done a total of maybe 6 story missions, and I've already earned enough points to buy about 8 characters. And supposedly I could have bought some when I first popped the game in.

I like that they used the western style of names (first & last) but why use Friеza? It's not that I dislike (it's close to the original taking out the e -- Friza) it it just doesn't feel right in a Japanese game they could've used either Freeza or Furiza (as is pronounced).

"Friеza" was also used on Battle Stadium D.O.N and Burst Limit trailer (dunno about the full game).

The "i" was used in Ultimate Stars, as well. I like to think that Bandai gets their western names from Wikipedia. :P

Question. How does one teleport away from something, like a Tenkaichi snap vanishing? I've done it a couple times, but can't figure out how...

Thanks a lot of this. :D I'm dissappointed Ichigo and Oga didn't recognize each other or any of the other characters, since both of them read Jump in their respective universes.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

How easy is this to pick up and play for someone that doesn't speak Japanese? Also does anyone know what tracks are included on the soundtrack that comes with the Anison edition?

In terms of a language barrier, the game is very import friendly. If you watched a lot of these shows chances are you know half the catch phrases coming out of the characters' mouths already.

In terms of actual pick up and play-ability, the game it self is very complex. . .almost needlessly so. There is a fantastic amount of polish and production value in the title but the game itself is some pretty sloppy business. In a mash up game like this, it would have been almost better to go the powerstone/smashbrothers route where characters have very simple to perform moves but use items and the environment to get the edge on the opponent. J-stars instead opts for a control scheme that rivals the complexity of the tenkaichi games but with a 2v2 format that emphasizes chaos and mayhem. The end result is something that is neither deep enough to be satisfying on a 1v1 level, nor is there enough of a focus on actual team work or strategy for it to work on a co-operative level.

An area where the game visibly stumbles is with basic fluid movement. It's hard to get to your opponent as your default jogging speed is slow to the point of being cumbersome. Yet the running dash is often too hard to control. The result is that movement is unintuitive feeling and can create some frustrating scenarios. By contrast, a game like Gundam vs Gundam Extreme Versus has such responsive movement that your character feels almost as an extension of your body. In J-stars it feels like the controls and movement options are fighting you.

It's an odd game to be sure but one that treads on familiar territory. While Battle of Z was intriguing for the new and bizarre mechanics it tried (to varying degrees of success), J-stars looks to be a sloppy execution of familiar ideas.

TL;DR: J-star's controls are way less intuitive than they should be and it gets in the way of the fun.

Anyone else pick up the game and have impressions to share?

Thanks for the feedback. That is a bit disappointing to hear though. I guess I will hold off on importing.

Watching the cutscenes for this just makes me wish they had gone full Kingdom Hearts, and actually animated the characters interacting. Or, at the very least, have the actors actually read their lines, as opposed to a line of text accompanied by a character grunting.

That's how I feel. It would have been nice to at least have recorded dialogue for the textboxes.

Media Create first week sales report:
04./00. [PS3] J-Stars Victory Vs # <FTG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.03.19} (¥7.980) - 118.240 / NEW
05./00. [PSV] J-Stars Victory Vs # <FTG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.03.19} (¥6.980) - 97.821 / NEW
Total: 216.061

Famitsu first week sales report:
04./00. [PS3] J-Stars Victory Vs # <FTG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.03.19} (¥7.980) - 118.737 / NEW <80-100%>
06./00. [PSV] J-Stars Victory Vs # <FTG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.03.19} (¥6.980) - 90.907 / NEW <80-100%>
Total: 209.644

Those aren't fantastic numbers (they're lower than the Nintendo games), but they're honestly better than what I was expecting given some of the early signs. If the game has some legs I'd expect a followup.

How does Battle of Z compare?
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)
Kai >>> Z
Current Roshi/Kulilin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SSJ3 Gotenks

Combined, Battle of Z has sold about a quarter of that figure in Japan. There's a big difference between the two; the primary market for home console Dragon Ball games hasn't been Japan since the day Final Bout shipped, where as J-Stars isn't going to see a release outside of Japan.

Also, J-Stars has luffy and Naruto on the cover. A comparison between the two wouldn't mean much.

As far as character unique dialog goes, here are the DBZ character ones:
Goku vs Vegeta, Freeza &/or Korosensei
Goku with Vegeta, Freeza, Lala, Edajima, Ace, Gon &/or Gintoki
Vegeta vs Goku, Freeza, Lala &/or Kuroko
Vegeta with Goku, Freeza, Arale &/or Hiei
Freeza vs Goku, Vegeta, Tsuna, Luffy, Ryotsu &/or Jonathan
Freeza with Goku, Vegeta & Ace

Goku's interaction with Lala is something about her spazzing out and Goku telling her who he is. The one with Gon is about how Goku used Jajanken in the past, and Gon wants to compare their techniques.
