This Dr. Slump and Arale-chan DVD film box release also had the support of two Kanzenshuu members, whom are, Herms and Ashura.

Please support this release if you'd like to see more Dr. Slump releases (as sales would tell Discotek there's interest getting more of it). Thanks!

Dscotek Media has a better chance on releasing the 80's Dr. Slump TV series on home video then Funimation does.

It's thirty years old. FUNimation thinks Sgt. Frog, from 2004, is too old to sell, which is why they're not picking up anymore of it.

Also, it's a comedy. North America has sort of made it clear why they have even a remote interest in Dragon Ball. Hint: it's not poop and boobs.

Didn't the manga get released by Viz?

I wouldn't much care if the series got a dub, but I would love if we at least got subbed releases of the anime, the remake and their films/specials/whatever that I could purchase. Discotek doing exactly that for the first five films is a very good start. Hopefully they will continue with the rest of the animated Dr. Slump material down the line.

Older anime series tend to not sell well in the US outside Voltron and Robotech for some reason. Seems young otaku don't like older things or something. About almost 4 years ago I was at a Funimation industry panel and told the guy I would love them forever if they did Dr. Slump with Laura Bailey or Luci Christian as Arale, and he said he liked the series as well, but being an older series...

I don't think anyone would really care for it at all to even bother.

A release date, I think. (If that wasn't part of the original announcement.) The set is coming out July 29th, 2014.

If the movies sell well then we could see the TV series on DVD. I would like to see the show with better subs since the only subs exist for it are iffy HK subs. I'm surprise Funi didn't try to dub the 1999 series back in the early 2000's.

God!!!!!!! I would love for the series to get released on DVD. I bought the first manga and really loved it and I'm going to be buying the 2nd here soon. I highly doubt though that it'll get released on DVD here in the states. :( I actually heard that Funimation may not be picking up the rest of Toriko which breaks my heart and has caused me to download all the episodes subbed.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I love the manga and wish this to happen one day, but I think it's one of those things where if it was going to happen it would have happened long ago. I don't see the point in Funimation releasing Dr. slump after all these years after the DBZ craze. They could have capitalized on the success of DB in giving spotlight to a Dr. Slump anime but that time has come and gone.

It's entirely in the realm of possibility that another company could release it but I'm not expecting it.

They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

Yeah I agree. I also think there's not much of a demand for it. lets say there's 20 people on this site alone who want it? that's not even a drop in the bucket. and I know for a fact that most of my friends who are dub fans only, didn't give a crap about penguin village or Arale. it actually aggravates me. :P

You're right that the demand isn't high but if they made it in limited quantities everyone would win and even in Dragon Ball the narrator assumed the viewers knew about Penguin Village which as it turns out they don't (except for those who have seen, read or played it).

I'll be supporting Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: Movie Box from Discoteck for sure even if they don't release the series then I'll at least have the films. :D

I'm still pretty bummed that the Spanish release got canned (by the 4th volume) as that was perfect for me, as I was loving the new Spanish dub and picture quality. This is what the picture quality of the Spanish release looked like:

There is never too much Arale-chan.

Funi stated that they will never do sub only releases despite the fact that they release Ultraman Tiga subbed only on DVD. I don't think they will waste time dubbing a 30+ year old show.

They actually just put out another short title as a sub-only thing as well. It seems like FUNi is looking into it as a side-business, but the majority of their catalog is always going to be dual-audio material.

As for the question of the thread - pretty much what everyone else has said. FUNimation will probably never get anything any older than Dragon Ball material, and maybe if they can ever get that other Yu Yu Hakusho movie. Old stuff, sadly, just doesn't do the numbers that newer stuff does. A lot of people, based on online comments I've seen anyway, just flat refuse to watch something if it's old or looks it. It's sad how much great stuff they're missing out on with a mindset like that, but it is what it is.

At this point, our only hope that I can see is that those movie box sets sell so well for Discotek that they end up licensing the series as well. Bare in mind that this could take quite some time, unless the license is cheap or something, though. They've still only been dabbling in Lupin III TV specials for the most part, and haven't touched either of the longer Lupin series - the first one that they did get is only 23 episodes. Lupin has been a pretty good seller for them so far and they still haven't gotten around to the longer series for it, so...something like Slump could take a bit. But there's always hope. Basically, go buy that movie set as soon as you can, if you want to see more, is what I would recommend.

Also, does anyone happen to have an exact run-time and short description for each of the first five films that they wouldn't mind sharing? I've only found a description for the first one, and run-times that seem to be different according to different sites. Also, only just now found out that Yasuo Yamada of Lupin III fame is Dr. Mashirito. Cannot. Wait. To hear this.
