Version of the manga I should buy: the iBook or Paperback?

Post by MediaFanGirl93 » Fri Mar 28, 2014 8:17 am

Okay, I've been planning to collect the DragonBall Manga and I've having a debate with myself on whether I should purchase the ebooks or paperback version of the DragonBall manga.

The pros of the ebooks is that it's cheaper and you have enough space in your house to put it.
The cons of the ebooks is that it's DRM protected, so if you wanted pictures from it, then you're out of luck.

The pros of the paperback version is that there are no DRMs.
The cons is that it takes up space in your house.

Which one should I buy, or should I buy both versions???

Aren't the ebook versions cheaper also? Plus they don't degrade with age.

I bought the physical copies though and that's what I prefer.

Yeah, the ebooks are like 6.99 per copy while the paperback is like 10.00. You do have a point.

I've always wanted to jump on the digital bandwagon, both for video games and books, but I just can't get over the desire to have physical media.

Even though physical media takes up so much room I'll usually spring for it over digital, even if it is more expensive. Though as I get older and as I start to value convenience over small preferences I'm sure this habit will change.

They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

I've been having this debate with myself up until just a few weeks ago. The ebooks are considerably cheaper (and definitely more convenient) and I like them because if you wind up having a panel that takes up two pages you can see the entire piece of art without the fold in the middle. With that said, my final decision turned out that (at least for Dragon Ball) I prefer the print version. More specifically the VizBigs. I've got a few of the the smaller volumes of early Dragon Ball, and Volume 1 as an iBook, and then the VizBigs. The VizBigs are larger than the volumes and my iPad Mini's screen so they're considerably easier to read, plus they include some of the color chapters. It's not all of them. There's a thread on here somewhere where I saw some kind of a percentage. Plus, with the print editions I don't have to turn my book sideways to see any two-page panels in their entirety. -_- (Contradicting nitpicking for the win!)

As much as digital media is becoming the way of the future, I would much rather have a physical product. Nothing beats having an actual book in hand. Call me old fashioned, but I hate reading books and such on computer screens. I'll always spring the few more dollars for the physical copy.

Oh great, now you have me debating on whether I should buy the whole iBook series or the VizBig editions. I already bought Volume 3 and 4 of the Dragonball series for iBooks, and I wonder if I should even continue buying the iBooks now. =/

That's a good question. Have you considered the Dragon Ball Full Color?

Hahah! Sorry about that! But I think that's a good thing. Which ever way you wind up going having something that hopefully you'll like better than all the other options.

I forgot about these. They're really nice. The print editions are also quite larger than the VizBigs. Though they only cover the Z portion I think?

If the collector in you wants something physical, more tangible, that you can stack on a bookshelf and decorate your room with - get the physical releases, as at least they'll retain some sort of sell on value should you choose to part with them later or find yourself short of a buck or two.

But, as you mentioned that space was an issue, the portability and convenience of the digital version appears ideal for you.

It all depends on what you prefer. If you would rather have a physical book in your hand (as I do), then get that. If not, then just get the e-books...

I'd start digital for a few volumes. If you enjoy you could keep goin digital and then switch to physical. Or you could get both then (digital is easier to travel with).

But if your starting the manga for the first time and the digital is cheaper then I'd check it out digitally first :)

For me, I got the 3-in-1s for Dragon Ball and then the VIZBIGS for the last 2 volumes (my favorite saga in the anime). I never read the manga and they are cheaper though the quality is not as good but I dont mind them tooo much (be careful because my vol 1 and 2 had ink splatters on some pages)

I am debating to finish out with the 3-in-1s

If you're a collector then you know what to go for although for a casual the eBook version is perfectly fine.

I think I might decide to buy the ebooks, considering I have some other manga on it (like "Yu Yu Hakusho" and "Dr. Slump").
