Japanese DVD Question
I have found a very good deal on Ebay. It is a collection of the episodes 1-291 of DBZ. I am planning on buying it with the birthday money I am sure to receive in a week. Since these dvds are the Japanese version with English subtitles, I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not the translation was accurate or not. I don't want to spend $160 and then find the subtitles impossible to read. Also, is it worth it to buy all these episodes without the Dragonbox re-mastered footage? I don't want to wait or have to pay for Funimation's dvds even if they get the Dragonbox footage.

Well first of all, can you give us a link to the item in question? It would help. Also when you say "Japanese version with English subtitles", do you mean that that's all the DVDs are? No English dubbed version? If that's the case, then the DVDs are very likely bootlegs since the official Japanese version of the DVDs *do not* have subtitles. And the official American ones have both the dub and sub on them.
If they're bootlegs which most likely they are, then I can assure you the subtitles will be horrible. Don't get scammed into wasting all your birthday money on something like this.

Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Yep, bootlegs. In those, kintouin is called the 'candy cloud', Goku is sometimes translated as 'Sky' and Gohan as 'Rice' if memory serves. Plus, the quality is pretty bad.
Snag the Japanese singles if you want good quality. Just be warned, no subtitles. Or you could wait and see if FUNi's upcoming season sets really have remastered footage.

The bootlegs having subtitles isn't exactly a valid reason for buying them over the singles. If you can't understand what's going on when Goku yells "Ora no Gohan wo kaese", subtitles reading "Me of rice sadness fuck!" won't make it any clearer.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Snag the Japanese singles if you want good quality. I didn't imply it was, I even rediculed the subtitles on those sets since someone online had bought one for research way back when the first one came out. it's just people for some reason don't get that Japanese discs, for Japanese audiences, don't have English subtitles. Didn't want the guy buying Toei's discs only to be pissed that he couldn't understand them.Adamant wrote:The bootlegs having subtitles isn't exactly a valid reason for buying them over the singles. And Goku doesn't say "Me of rice sadness fuck!"? And here I thought he was a kind-hearted warrior with childlike innocence...and tourettes ;p

Just a question, but the Dragon Boxes are Region 2, right? If so, does only region-free and Region 2 DVD players play 'em? (I'm possibly thinking of hacking my DVD player in order to get over this problem)Not a problem. Always beware of anything that is region free and has Chinese and English subtitles.

Agreed on the entire rest of responses given, so I guess I don't have anything else to contribute

I dont understand arent these dvds already out the "ultimate uncut" stuff? I never bought one so they dont have remastered footage? and the season sets will?MajinVejitaXV wrote:Yep, bootlegs. They're not remastered, they're the same old masters with some filtering applied. They're about on par with previous FUNi releases. The seasons sets are rumored to have genuine, remastered footage.LionOmega wrote:I dont understand arent these dvds already out the "ultimate uncut" stuff? Personally, I'm not gonna believe it until someone proves it. Freeware filters do not a remastering make.
