I wouldn't really call it hacking since it takes zero effort to do nor does it really 'hack' into anything. It's essentially a flood of connections to the site.
I think the best analogy would be to imagine you're working at an office and someone calls and asks you what '2+2' is. Since only one person is calling, that's not an issue. Now imagine if 15 people are calling with the same question, you can go as fast you can and get through it all but it takes a lot longer for people waiting their turn.
Now imagine 50 people are calling you. As you answer, even MORE people are calling and suddenly there's hundreds on hundreds waiting. You try your best to get to all the callers but eventually you reach your limit and can't answer anything. You're just too swamped.
When a server is getting more requests than it can handle, it clogs up and essentially crumbles. So, in the case of Kanzenshuu, someone will have been using a swarm of PCs to send an insane amount of traffic to the site to the point in which it simply couldn't function any longer.
Heath will have spent the past few days trying to isolate and block all the false connections. To actually allow the site to 'breathe', he will have disabled all incoming connections to the site.
Not an easy feat by any means so definitely a huge congrats on getting it sorted in such a timely manner and not going crazy while doing it!
