Discussion specifically regarding the "refreshed" TV version of DBZ created in Japan for its 20th anniversary, including individual threads for each episode.

Yep! Nabbed the link from your Twitter, actually. Thanks!
Um, interesting show on Fuji TV right now. It appears to be a show that's meant to teach you English? Finding it kind of amusing. There's like, a knight-type guy that's talking in English, and a kid with a 'Ben 10'-like thing on his wrist.
Is it normal to have so much English on Japanese TV? Maybe they're aware there's a lot of English-speaking viewers tuning in for DB Kai.
"It's good to speak English, isn't it?"

I'm laughing so hard. Tanooki's tweet had me in hysterics - 'America has Sesame Street. Japan has a scary knight that'll kill your family if you don't answer his English questions.'
Some of these kids are absolutely adorable though.

It's called 'Mission English' apparently. The Dad had a bruise on his face, didn't he?

That music at that start was very Faulconer-esque though. Here's hoping the rest of the episode goes well.
So cheap synth done in a basement? How is that a positive?
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Happiness is climate, not weather.
They stopped outsourcing HD remastering to Q-Tec and now they're doing everything inside the Toei group. As a result, the footage looks obviously worse than before except for improved sharpness and less jitter. It's darker overall and colors are less carefully corrected. There's ringing artifacts, too. It looks more "forced" in general.
...well that's a little disconcerting. It's possible they cut corners because they knew it wouldn't be airing in Japan at the time before they changed their minds, so maybe they skimped out on us a little bit?
Also, here's an approximation of the lyrics (anyone feel free to make fixes/corrections)
Kamekamehameha kuraberu kai?
Yume no DEKA sa de hari au kai?
VERSUS saikyou no RIVAL wa jibun
Dougaku wo kashiru chiga hi heto tagiri
Koufun mo POWER mo MAX
Sabitsuita mirai koji akeraretara
Rekishijo "kiseki" to yobe
Kizutsuku tabi tsuyoku nareta
Dakara yasashisa wa yowasa ja nai
Genkai kun wo fun tsuke JUMP!
Zetsubou jyanpo mo hagushite DANCE!
GORGEOUS! Futatsu wa DRAGONBALL ni onegai!
Kamekamehameha kuraberu kai?
Yume no DEKA sa de hari au kai?
VERSUS mirai wa gyorogaku no SPECTACLE
I agree. I miss the awesome dark details of Q-Tec's footage, and that green tint seems to actually be a part of the footage. It's actually funny being able to say you miss Q-Tec, since they have a terrible rep, but I still like their work on Kai and Fist of the North Star regardless.
At least it's still way better than FUNimation's remastering.
"Kenshi is sitting down right now drawing his mutated spaghetti monsters thinking he's the shit..."--Neptune Kai "90% of you here don't even know what you're talking about (there are a few that do). But the things you say about these releases are nonsense and just plain dumb. Like you Metalwario64"--final_flash
The new theme is AMAZING. I love the opening too. I would have preferred it had Gohan curb stomp Super Boo like in the manga/anime, but whatever I still think it's awesome. Would have loved to see the kamehameha collide with the pink ki death ball too. However so far I don't like the ending theme or the outro. The ending theme is...ok I guess, but I'll take Yeah Care Break over it at the moment. The outro animation doesn't flow to me. It's all over the place with everyone but Goku beat up, they stand together...and then we cut to random stuff that happens, then a black background with Goku...the end? It's meh.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Doctor. wrote:I've explained before, I'll just paraphrase myself.
Power levels establish tension and drama. People who care about them (well, people who care about them in a narrative) don't care about the big numbers or the fancy explosions. If you have character A who's so much above character B, who's the main character, you're gonna be left wondering how in the hell character B, the character we're supposed to care and root for, is going to escape the situation or overcome the odds. It makes us emotionally invested.
If character B doesn't escape the situation in a believable way that's consistent with previous events, then that emotional investment is gone. It was pointless tension, pointless drama made just to suck in the viewer. It has no critical value whatsoever. The audience is left believing that the author can just create whatever scenarios he wants and what happens to the characters is decided by whatever the author wants to happen, regardless of the events that happened in the story. Which, in fairness, is what happens, but the audience wants to be fooled. The audience wants to know that the world they're following has rules. That the world they're invested in isn't going to bend to external factors that are irrelevant to them.
An author can do whatever he wants with the characters, that's not false. But the author should also have the responsibility to make sure it fits in cohesively with the other events in the narrative he has created.
I really like the new opening and ending. Due to differences in timezones, I've just woken up and the first notification I get in the phone is that kei has uploaded them. Nice way to start a Sunday
I believe this is about the new CD single for the ending theme...? http://www.barks.jp/news/?id=1000102171
There's a new promo picture here:
Perhaps it's gonna be album cover art?

Found someone who managed to post a small clip of the new Videl voice. Not sure if I like it, I agree with the comments that say it 'sounds too cutesy for Videl':
Hmm...I dunno, I think it works, honestly. I love Minaguchi and really hope she gets to take the role up again in the future, but this replacement voice sounds like it could work pretty well.
As far as 'cutesy' goes though, I can hear that...but I always found Minaguchi's voice rather 'cutesy' too.

Damn I really was expecting a low quality release but this is worse than I imagined it to be.
Very disappointing picture quality and reminds me of FUNimation's DBZ Season BDs but still not as bad. This was the one thing I was interested and they killed it.
Thanks Toei Animation!
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Compressed TV shots that may well be filtered aren't really a great indication despite me agreeing that it isn't the greatest remaster in the world. It's nothing like the Season Blu-Rays though. The art is actually solid and backgrounds aren't smudgy at all.
Whoever uploaded the raw sharpened the ever loving shit out of the TV rip and couldn't compress to save their lives. With the exception of those in Japan, we're all relying on streams and compressed TV rips from not the most reputable sources.
OT: Jay, you know that BD is properly spelt Blu-ray do you not? "Blu-Ray" is incorrect and everywhere on official releases and all they either use Blu-ray or BD at the top of the Blu-ray cover.
It just feels weird and uncomfortable seeing people write "Blu-Ray" instead of the appropriate way.
