If anyone is interested, FUNimation is having a "Dragon Ball Week" sale until April 7. You can preorder Seasons 4 and 5 Blu-rays for $15.99 each.

Grrrr I just can't afford it right now. besides from the looks of the sale I'm not really missing out on much of a deal
I have to try to get a PS3 controller and season 3 on Blu-ray.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

As cheap and tolerable as these are, I'm holding off to see if something better follows, or at least if we get DB/GT sets or a fixed ending for the first two seasons. I imagine there'll be plenty of opportunities to grab them cheaply in the future though.

Buddy I don't see them fixing the ending on the first 2 releases. just wouldn't make sense for them to do that from a business point of view.

The sites back yay!
Now back to the thread I made a couple of comparisons between the dragon boxes and the season blu rays, I downscaled the season blu ray screenshots to make the comparisons easier to see.

That shot of Piccolo actually looks pretty nice. But Gohan and Krillin are...they're...blue. Like, blatantly blue. I opened one of the BD shots in a separate tab to just make sure the contrast with the Dragon Box colours wasn't playing tricks on my eyes. Nope, they're totally blue.
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Looking at the cloud in the background shot of Kururin, and the disappearance of the warm grain, I've come to the conclusion that Funimation has turned these sets into oil paintings. Now there's nothing wrong with that, and it makes it a novelty to own, certainly unique pieces to add to the collection. Though, if we're looking for something true to the original, this is not the product.
As far as endings go, I don't really care, and if they offered me a japanese original dragon box type release, with restored colours, and a synchronized american audio track, I wouldn't care if the ending was butchered like this product. However, in this case, it just throws salt at an open wound.

To be perfectly honest, I couldn't care less about the fans a re-issue might alienate because if all they're concerned about is being able to scalp the people who were either unaware of the Dragon Boxes or couldn't afford them at the time, they're just leeches and deserve to have their greed backfire on them.

As much as these sets don't bother me. I did get a little dizzy watching this. Those pans

Also look at the left side, they go off frame and quicky go back in to keep Goku in frame.

Oi... It's like watching a Youtube video where someone recorded a TV show with a camera. So shaky and unnatural.eledoremassis02 wrote:As much as these sets don't bother me. I did get a little dizzy watching this. Those pans![]()

It's things like this that make me prefer the DVDs (overall. Some Season Two material on the DVD is obviously godawful). Plus, the colors are either overly purple, or overly light blue. Outside of one episode, the "Season Three" DVD had consistent colors.

...Okay what is up with that shadow behind Gohan's hair on the BluRay? I mean, normally I'd chalk stuff like that up to a simple issue with the animation, (certainly not the first time I've seen the cel casting a shadow onto the background) but... it's not there on the Dragon Box. Well I guess it is possible that it's a different frame...qjz123 wrote:The sites back yay!

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
I think it's because the Season Sets are scanned in HD, whereas the Dragon Boxes were only scanned in SD, so the HD scan was able to capture those details. I could be wrong.
If that's the case, it kind of lends credence to the opinion that the series should be watched in SD, because it was a low budget TV series never "intended" for an HD scan, as it brings out flaws from the source material. Of course, it's only an opinion, and not one I necessarily subscribe to.

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Am I the only one that thinks the Seasons set looks way better than the Dragonbox? The Dragonbox is too grainy, I even showed a couple of my friends and they agreed. Honestly I'd much rather trade somewhat less accurate colors and a different aspect ratio for HD.
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

While you may be in the minority here on Kanzenshuu I'm pretty sure if you were to show the dragon box vs season blu ray comparisons to the general DBZ fan base the majority of them would agree with you which is what Funimation is counting on.xmysticgohanx wrote:Am I the only one that thinks the Seasons set looks way better than the Dragonbox? Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Yup, this is very true. One of my buddies picked up Season 1 recently of the new BD release and he is loving it. He feels that DBZ has never looked better, and his brothers are enjoying just as much. So it's interesting to see the positive response from a lot of the mainstream fans.qjz123 wrote:While you may be in the minority here on Kanzenshuu I'm pretty sure if you were to show the dragon box vs season blu ray comparisons to the general DBZ fan base the majority of them would agree with you which is what Funimation is counting on.xmysticgohanx wrote:Am I the only one that thinks the Seasons set looks way better than the Dragonbox? I mean, whether Jesus is real or not, he - he's had a bigger impact on the world than any of us have. And the same can be said for Bugs Bunny and - and Superman and Harry Potter. They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

Here are some more comparisons between dragon box volume 3 and the season 3 blu ray, if anybody has the orange brick version of these screenshots or of the previous one's I've uploaded feel free to post them it would be greatly appreciated.

I hate how sharp these sets look. Ugh it kinda hurts my eyes just looking at them

It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
The screenshots for the close-ups at least looked nice but those with the backgrounds all visible are pretty bad leading people to believe this is a water paint / oil paint work. Better stick to Dragon Ball Z: Dragon Box Z and Dragon Ball Kai than this.
This works out fine for people who want to watch DBZ with improved quality over the Orange Bricks but that's what serviceable releases (Orange Bricks, Blue Bricks and Green Bricks) are for.

Hi.
Apologies if it's been answered, but is the Japanese audio quality better than the dragon box version?
And if so, is the difference minimal or significant enough to consider a purchase?
Thanks.
