All these new games...

Post by Godo » Wed Aug 16, 2006 6:07 pm

There are all these new Dragonball games...but still there are old ones too.
In this thread I would like us to discuss the "old" Dragonball games, what you liked with them, which one you like the most ect.

The games that are "included" you can find here: 'Ol Videogames

I'll start with this:
My favorite Dragonball game (old of course) is Hyper Dimension. I liked it because of that it had a rough tone, the characters looked "real", and then they had added good sound effects. Overall that's the game I like the most.

My second favourite is Legend of the Saiyajin, and that is merely because of that you could train your character to unnormal strenght, or like when you could bring Tien, Yamcha and Chao-zu to Namek (even though you had to put a lot of effort into the game to be able to make them survive).
Well, that's about it.

The first DragonBall game I ever played was Budokai 1, so I don't have the same nostalgic feelings for the crappy *cough* vintage games in the series.

Would Budokai 1 count? It's fairly old by now anyways.

I'm all about Super Butoden 2. The music is the best of the series, and it focuses on my favorite very specific character... SSJ2 Gohan. It's also got the rarity-factor going with playable Bojack and Zangya, and hey... even Broli (via password). Though the third game notched up the graphics slightly (like the effects surrounding the ki blasts when they connect), this one had a ton more backgrounds and all the other good things I mentioned :).

I just love the Super Gokuden games. They were easy and fun to play through. I actually restarted playing the first game, it is pretty long. I love that it goes through the entire DB series.

(not to go off topic or anything but I've read that Sparking! Neo will have mad amounts of story spanning from DB-through-GT...50+ hours Atari has said)

My first DBZ game ever was the Saturn Dragon Ball Z Legends. I actually played it in Taiwan at my friend's house before I even know what DBZ was. This is the game that got me addicted to DBZ. "Legends" was one of my favorite because it was really fast-paced and had the best depiction of the DBZ fighting styles. I also like to listen to characters talk in the character selection screen during a battle, even though I don't understand them.

The second favorite would be "Shin Butoden". "Shin Butoden" was great because everything about it was cool at the time including a mode featuring Mr. Satan, great music, great gifs, and plus it is HFIL a lot better than Ultimate Battle 22 (I can't exaggerate on how bad UB22 was, that piece of $h!t) :x

DBZ: Legends (the PlayStation version) was also the first Dragon Ball game I ever played. I had been watching DBZ for a couple years beforehand but it was the thrill of actually PLAYING Dragon Ball that got me. After Legends I imported both Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout. I had heard about how terrible those games were but I didn't care because there wasn't anything else available until the first Budokai came out. By then though my PS1 was shot and it's just to hard to import for PS2 so I sold Legends and never got to play it again. I bought the domestic releases of UB22 and Final Bout but at that point I had Budokai 2 so they weren't really worth playing anymore.

Now I know that PS3 games and systems are going to be region free. If the system is going to be able to play PS1 and PS2 games from any region, I'll definitely re-buy Legends.

Oh sweet. Sweet :D

I've got the same issue as Deus, Budokai was the first Dragon Ball game I ever played (and it somewhat fully introduced me to the world of Dragon Ball :) ). But I started looking for some of the older games, and started playing Hyper Dimension and Super Butoden 3 as well as a few others. (Haven't played 2 yet).

Hyper Dimension is obviously one of my favorite. I loved the graphics, which was GREAT for a Super Nintendo. The story mode (as far as I got in Japanese, and later a somewhat translated ROM) was pretty cool too, as I liked how you could still go through the story after a defeat or two. I also liked Super Butoden 3 for its cool fighting style.

Ultimate Battle 22 was the first DBZ game I ever played and my brothers and I have actually had some good times with it (though we had some hard times trying to perform attacks).

We got Legends a while after and we still think it's the best DBZ game for PS1 (and one of the best DBZ games period).

I got Hyper Dimension a few years later. Everyone says it's one of the best and I thought that when I first played it but these days I get bored with it fairly quickly whenever I play it. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way.

The first Dragonball series game I played was Final Bout at my friends house in 98. Back than that game was great.

The first ever PS1 game that my siblings and I bought was "Legends"...and we didn't even have a PS1 back then  We all thought it was for the PC. So I wasn't able to play it until our mom bought us one a few years later. And since it was the first Dragon Ball game that I played, of course I really liked it, hearing the Japanese voices and seeing the moves. I also wasn't very familiar with the whole of DBZ then - I knew about Trunks, Majin Buu, and others...but not the exact story flow. So I guess I got a good idea of how the plot was going to be from the game, heh.

We also had a chance to play Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout. I didn't like UB22 that much...but Final Bout was one game I really loved playing, because I could kick other people's butts with it. Hahaha~ Oh, and Vegetto was there. I had a crush on Vegetto during that time, heh.

I have the original doemstic release of Final Bout in mint condition. I never played it much though, because I didn't find it fun at all. Dragonball Z Legends I imported along with Ultimate Battle 22 later on. I used to play UB22 a lot with my cousin, and Legends was just a blast to play single player. Legends I enjoyed a lot and still play on my PSOne with an import disc loader from time to time.

I also have "Dragon Power" for NES, but it blows because the sprites are altered from the original version, and the game just sucks overall. I got it out of a bargin bin for $4, so I can't complain much, but I never dedicated much time to playing it.

Legend of the Super Sai-jin, without a doubt. Not only is it my favorite old game, it's my favorite DBZ RPG beating out even the LoG games. Just pure awesomeness. 8)

Let me give a word about Dragon Power...I HATE IT. The sprites are just plain ugly. They have made Goku into a monkeyboy! And then the translations that sucks...Bulma's underwear being made into sandwiches due to censorship. Overall I don't fancy the music that much either.

Agreed! It's bad though that it only covers the Freeza saga.

You have the Outside-Japan release, very censored, with most sprites altered into Journey to the west-looking characters. That's why Son-Goku looks like a monkey. I agree that it really sucks, I couldn't even get past the first boss...

Hyper Dimension is the best followed by Super Butoden 3, Super Butoden 2 and Legend of the Super Saiyajin. The last mentioned one is just so great (not graphics-wise though), in my opinion the Legend Of Goku series don't even come close to it in what's about gameplay and feel.

Super Gokuden 2 was by far my favourite of the old games. I love the battle system and cool graphics for the Ki Blasts and the awesome way it had those insane combo attacks for some characters.

I liked the whole look and feel of the game the way the characters flowed when they fought and the incorrect choices that would lose you the game.

No, there's the Super Butoden and Super Gokuden series. Both were on the Super Famicom.

The first DB game I ever played was Final Bout. Back then, I was young and foolish, and I thought it was great. Shortly after that, I bought Ultimate Battle 22. I thought that the special moves were hard to pull off and were graphically lacking. So I didn't like it as much as I liked Final Bout. Then I rented Hyper Dimension, along with the console, and it made Final Bout look like shit. :P

Hyper Dimension is great, isn't it? It catchs the essence of the characters and DBZ in itself. The fights are very dynamic, yet one can follow them very well, and the characters are very well designed as well as their attacks.
In my opinion it's almost perfect in the sense f being a DBZ game.

The first Dragonball game I played was Dragonball III on the Famicon, but my favorite was Hyper Dimension.
