Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
A lot of people keep asking if these sets are worth buying or not so I thought I'd give my honest overview of this release.
Those of you who know the history behind these releases can just skip down to the review section.
It's essentially a proper write up of everything I've posted in this thread but I hope this proves useful!

On this screenshot comparison Piccolo's shirt blends with the background:
And then afterwards there's a review of Dragon Ball Kai Episode 01 *sigh* at that picture quality but I'm hoping the Blu-ray release will be better although I'm not getting my hopes up at all considering it'll be mostly the same.. probably.

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
As much as I wanted to hate this release, I'm starting to like it. I think this is how Kai should've looked--it's way better than poorly re-animated scenese and soft colors. The widescreen aspect of it is love-hate. I love how gorgeous it looks on my 65" TV, but it still feels overly-cramped half the time. The only time I don't like the digital pans is when they do it in the middle of a camera pan because that's when you can see the frames jump a little. I'll probably find myself watching these instead of my Dragon Box from now on. Even if the blu-rays aren't perfect, they're better than compressed 480p quality.
And it has the Faulconer score

Yeah I really like this release a-lot as well. but it won't always be the way I watch the series because I have so many different releases like the Dragon-Boxes,Level Sets and such but I do like this release.supersaiyan3 wrote:As much as I wanted to hate this release, I'm starting to like it. The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Dragon Boxes still look better IMO. It's not impossible for a DVD to look better in a Blu-Ray.

Yep, I personally agree that being Blu-Ray doesn't mean HD. You can still keep the grain intact and not over saturate the colors for Blu-Ray. Look at the Level Sets, they did a really absolute job without screwing it up. This guy doesn't understand. If you need any more info check this review.Hellspawn28 wrote:Dragon Boxes still look better IMO. It's not impossible for a DVD to look better in a Blu-Ray.

The guy should pick his recording locations better, his intro has all kinds of echoing from where he is recording.
He refers to HD as a 'format' (which it isn't.) He gets relatively close, but it'd help if he did a bit more research (at one point he refers to 'tv box format' which... isn't a thing.)
B for effort, as I believe the guy cares, but some research and extra energy would help, as overall it's down to a D and I had to turn it off after a minute or so because he gets so much wrong from a technical perspective while trying to explain the 'technical' to people.
Also... awesome theme song.

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Seeing TOEI's scan of the footage for Kai, I can't wait to compare it to the equivalent of the Z blu rays from FUNi though I think FUNi would win on color on that one
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
I have to say these Blu-rays seem like garbage.
Look at this comparison between Kai and the new Blu-rays.
Half the footage is lost and its so blurry and washed out.
Funimation fucked up big time.

These sets are hardly better than the orange bricks. Better audio and more detail, still really shit though
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
I believe I've mentioned this before, but that is not a fair representation of the two products as a whole. I mean, yeah, the BluRays look like that all the way through, but only three or four episodes of Kai look that sharp. And the only reason those episodes of Kai look that sharp is that, for whatever reason, Toei stored those particular Z-episodes on 35mm film rather than the 16mm film the rest of the show was stored on. FUNi, however, did not get such high quality film-prints for them, so for this particular segment, it was literally impossible for FUNi to give us anything comparable to Kai's quality. The footage they had to work with simply wasn't good enough in general.dan2026 wrote:I have to say these Blu-rays seem like garbage.

Fair enough, but these Blu-ray still look the pits.
The grain has been DNRed to hell and left the picture looking frankly a mess.
And whoever decided to crop into widescreen deserves to be shot.
Her's another gem I found.
Wont post in the thread as it's kinda big.
