Creating a BoG Soundtrack with Kikuchi Music

Post by Haseowolf » Fri Dec 06, 2013 3:49 pm

Hey there everybody!

So there's a project I would like to try my hand at: replacing the regular score/music in Battle of Gods with some classic Kikuchi music. Like some others out there I think the Battle of Gods music is alright at best and am curious as to what sort of feelings would be invoked if the movie used some of the original tunes Kikuchi made for the TV series and movies back in the 80's and 90's.

Now, from what my initial plans are, I would still include Flow's Head Cha La as well as Hero as I feel those songs and their uses were excellent and well used. But if they clash a little too much with the Kikuchi score things might change, but I doubt that'll happen.

I've got a nice collection of the Kikuchi score from Dragonball and Dragonball Z, so I'm covered there. What I would need is a rip of the dialogue and sound effects channels from Battle of Gods. I'm not sure if the streams are split up on home release of BoG, but if they are I would love for a helpful soul to either provide me with those or walk me through the best way to get them myself. So, is this a possibility? Is anyone able to help me out?

Since the only thing I would be changing would be the finished audio I don't think there would be a problem with me sharing the results here, so I would not be the only one benefitting. However, if that's something either Mike or any other mods feel would not be good to distribute through these channels obviously I would abide by that.

Thank you!

I've already done the music placement myself, but I've been leaving it lying about because removing the music from the audio track is a pain in the ass. It's 5.1ch surround and the score is mixed differently than the soundtrack CD, which makes it really hard to be removed with Utagoe Rip that I always use. I think I need the stereo track from the Hong Kong release.

I'll upload my placement as one flac file if you want.

I'd be interested in that myself. Is the opposite possible where you can end up with a music/sfx or sfx only version? Doubt it based on how Utagoe Rip works. But, figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Yeah, I'd be interested to give it a listen, Kei. As for the Hong Kong release I know that a certain VegettoEX had ordered it 8) Though I'm contemplating doing the same myself (at some point after the holidays). Hopefully using a stereo mix and removing the music that way will work out.

Here's my own music placement: *removed* Sync this with a video file.

I think I should redo some scenes.

I thought the score was fine as is. If anything id like to hear it with the Yamamoto score we got in Kai.

I really like it! Overall it fit pretty well and cues were well used. Some may have been just a bit off in terms of fitting with the scene well, but yeah, FANTASTIC job. Now all we need is a clean dialogue and sound effects track to get it all mixed together.

I don't outright hate the score BoG has. I just thought that using Kikuchi's score could be a better fit and want to try to accomplish that. As for Yamamoto, while I didn't watch that much Kai I did like the music he made/stole for it and think it would be cool to make another alternate Yamamoto score for BoG. Since I don't have any of the Kai BGM I don't think I'd be the guy for the job though.

Pretty much agree with Haseowolf. The fight after Goku becomes Super Saiyan God, was all beautifly placed! Actually all of the Super Saiyan God scenes were really well done. For a fandub clip I'm doing with a few others people, would you mind if we used your placement for that scene Kei (with credit to you of course)? We were going to do an original (Sumitomo) and Kikuchi BGM placement versions of the clip.

Listened to this, and I have to say, while I don't mind Sumitomo's score for the movie, the way you placed the music made the movie a lot more emotive. You did a fantastic job. :D

If you still need this, I have the Hong Kong BD and can upload the track for you.

EDIT: Here.

Disabled all but the center channels of the 5.1 track and played your music placement back in sync with the film. What a great job! Perhaps some areas where you've chosen to use no music seem a little dry but overall, a fantastic job.

I think I may spend a day mixing it together properly so I don't have to jump through hoops again. It's so interesting how different the film feels with Kikuchi's music.

Would definitely love to share the finished track but I have no idea where that kinda thing would fall regarding the forum's rules.

Thanks, but I think some scenes like Goku's SSJG transformation are far more dramatic in the original version.

Wow, thank you! I will try deleting the music with that.

The scenes left silent are meant to have the same tracks from the original version.

Ahh, I see. I noticed that you'd left room for HERO to play but wasn't aware of any other moments. Sorry!

I dunno if this is one of those tracks where you can mute the voices, but mind if I used this to grab some sound effects?

EDIT: Never mind.

Eh, fair enough, especially with those last action scenes. They still worked very well though in their own ways.
