Oh wow, never caught onto that little tidbit apparently. That's really interesting, and cinches it for me - I think those one-shots are totally part of my personal canon. Or...at least they would be if I ever actually made one, instead of just watching stuff and enjoying it/not enjoying it for what it is.SaiyaJedi wrote:For what it's worth, Toriyama mentions in the interview at the end of KatsuraAkira that he considers Jaco the Galactic Patrolman a part in what he calls the "Galactic Patrol series", along with Sachie-chan and Jiya. Per his interview last year in V-Jump, it would seem that he originally had it in mind as a faster-paced series with more action (since Katsura would have been the one drawing it), but then overhauled it into something he could draw himself as a part of the Jump 45th-anniversary celebration.

@ TheDevilsCorpse - Oh wow, you weren't kidding about 'drastic' changes. I didn't even recognize that the girl was Sachie-chan at first! Much as I love Katsura's artwork, I...have never really cared for the way Sachie looked for some reason (I think it's the pouty lips for one thing). I prefer that Toriyama design a lot more.

That's pretty cool. In the end Jaco isn't just a prequel to Dragon Ball; it also connects various Toriyama stories that we thought were unrelated at first.
Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
That's neat! I never would've expected Toriyama to actually try and connect all of these one-shots together. This means that we now have 6 connected Toriyama stories - Sachie-chan, Jiya, Jaco, Dr Slump, Dragon Ball, and Neko Majin Z.
Soooo...with all the talk about canon recently, anyone want to take a guess at where Sand Land, Cowa, Dragon Boy, Dub and Peter, Go! Go! Ackman, Kajika, Kintoki, and Hyowtam fit into the Dragon World?

Well, Merlusa from Kintoki appears in the fourth chapter of Jaco. It is just a cameo but you could probably make it work if you really wanted it to.ACCloud wrote:That's neat! Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
There are a bunch of characters from Toriyama's early one-shots who either make cameos in Dr. Slump or are reused wholesale (P-Man, the policemen in Penguin Village, and Suppaman all come to mind). King Nikochan also makes an appearance in Pola & Roid, although the gag is that the main characters know how to deal with him by reading Dr. Slump.Makaioshin wrote:Well, Merlusa from Kintoki appears in the fourth chapter of Jaco. Thanks for clarification guys @ SaiyaJedi, Kaliba and Oyaji. I'll definitely look into Jiya some more.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

I think Wonder Island, Today's Highlight Island and Pola & Roid fit in enough with Dr. Slump to be considered a part of the universe.
Pink and Tomato have more minor cameos in Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball if I remember correctly. Probably not enough to count them in the same continuity as being a fact, but it would make it easier if someone wants to.
Dub & Peter 1 is in Dragon Ball continuity. As it uses the same Zeni system, takes place in Pepper Town (17 and 18 attacked here in the future), and one of the villains, Rock, appeared in the anime version of the Great Saiyaman's escapades.

The girl form Escape is also in Dragon Ball, and a Martian from Ackman is seen in the Other World behind Goku in the manga.

I only view Jaco canon to the DB manga. I think not everything AT makes is canon to the Dragon Ball world. Sandland just happen to have a demon that looks similar to Dabra and I remember he never called himself Dabra in the manga. AT just likes to reuse the character designs and if you look at the Dragon Quest games, some of the character designs look similar to other DB characters.

Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
As much as I'd like them too, I don't think all of Toriyama's works fit into the single, Dragon Ball continuity either. But it's more than just Jaco that can fit, and the others that can, well they do so quite easily. For example, Dub and Peter 1 is a short story about kids who build a smart car and race it against a thug. It doesn't really matter if you don't want to include these types of one-shots, but it really affects nothing in the grand scheme of the Dragon Ball franchise.
This wasn't really aimed at anyone specific. I just see a lot of complaining on the forums and on Twitter about trying to create an expanded universe. I admit some of the works people try to include are really stretching it, but the ones that can fit? Why not? I see no harm in doing so, and no point in having people complain about those who want to either.

Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
In the case of Dragon Quest, it's actually 100% due to Yuuji Horii, the creator of the series. Horii creates all the character designs and monsters of DQ, and only when that's done does he ask Akira Toriyama to redraw them in a prettier form. Toriyama has little creative input in the DQ series.Hellspawn28 wrote:AT just likes to reuse the character designs and if you look at the Dragon Quest games, some of the character designs look similar to other DB characters.

Just confirming something quickly; despite the A5 size, the Super Elite release doesn't include the few color pages, correct?

That is correct. In fact, these pages have been stripped and re-shaded in black-and-white, rather than simply greyscaled.jda95 wrote:Just confirming something quickly; despite the A5 size, the Super Elite release doesn't include the few color pages, correct?

Looks like US Jaco's Amazon page has been updated with an image. Not Super Elite, but a little extra color than the standard edition.

That's a bit of a shame. I like the Super Elite Edition's cover much more than the standard one. But since I already have it in Japanese, it doesn't really matter.
Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
Hi everyone. I found this listing on amazon.ca for "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" (which is set to be released this coming January, 2015).
http://www.amazon.ca/Jaco-Galactic-Patr ... +patrolman
I was wondering, is this for the entire series? It says "Paperback: 248 pages", and yet it's only $11.23 to pre-order (which seems ridiculously cheap). Are they really releasing the whole 248 pages for that cheap?

Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
That's around the same size as other manga volumes. It is a little higher, but it's not really enough to split into two volumes. Judging from the other series suggested on the listing, it's the same price as other manga volumes too (with varying numbers of pages). So what's so surprising?
Re: "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" discussion (incl. "DB Minu
Not everything, yeah...but Jaco sure as Hell is canon. He wouldn't have gone through all the trouble to makeHellspawn28 wrote:I only view Jaco canon to the DB manga. Spoiler:
That's not even factoring in Dragon Ball Minus.
As for anime continuity...given Toriyama's writing the movies now, I'd say what he writes goes at this point.

I just noticed that I got credited on the main page (there's a website too?!) for finding the Jaco cover. Very cool!
Anyway, something that I think is nice about this cover design is that those sparkles in the background are made with dots rather than a solid line or airbrush look. The Super Elite version has a more interesting illustration, but this one has become pretty iconic, used several times in Japan, so I can see why they went with this. And I like the background in this version a lot more than the Japanese volume.
