This is just RGB level editing again, but with some saturation added:

It took a ton of editing to get the blue to be... blue again.

I actually like the piece that played during Goku's return (actually, I REALLY like it, because I generally don't hear a lot of anime use this type of music, as it almost sounds like it's out of a game), but the usage there...

Ugh.

Seriously, a lot of the problems with the score I'm having is less so the music itself, but rather the placement and usage of it. Provided, his score needs to grow on me some more, but as long as the placement remains the way it does, this isn't going to really work for me. Seriously, Satoshi Motoyama, what the heck are you doing!?

EDIT: Ack. Used Japanese order. Wanted to correct that.

I genuinely get the feeling at this point that the 'score' for the Buu arc of Kai is just a bag of off-cuts, demos and scrap ideas as opposed to being an actual bespoke work.

There's not a great deal of consistency in either compositional tone or production values, it feels like Toei were just like "We're not willing to spend much money on this, so we'd like to use some of the work you did for Battle of Gods, but we need a little more - so just give us whatever you have lying around". As such, Sumitomo probably then spent the best part of the next 15 minutes dumping old, half-finished or unused works from his demo collection on his hard-drive onto a USB stick for them.

I mean heck, if it that wasn't bad enough - at least if you had guys working on it who were skilled when it came to music placement, Toei might have actually been able to pull it off a little better.

It's hilarious actually how people are comparing this to the Faulconer score, when the work that Bruce and his team did was entirely bespoke. They not only wrote the score specifically for the show, but they placed it too - and actually gave thought, care and attention to what went where. Whatever your feelings are on the wall-to-wall placement, you at least can't accuse those guys of just sticking any old piece of music anywhere - there's leitmotif, slowly developing themes and mickey-mousing, and the score is at least mood appropriate to the dialogue.

As I said before, the too rushed pacing and the nearly wall-to-wall score makes the entire episode feel like just a compilation of video game cutscenes. I can't get into the story.

I feel really bad for Sumitomo. He had to compose a lot of pieces with a tight budget and they're crazily misused, which leads to a poor reputation of himself.

Oh... and to bring up this image once more, you can see a green trim around that yellow piece on the left side of the shot. That looks like yet another artifact from rushed color correction from when they made the sky "blue" (as much as it can be with that green tint).

I don't feel bad. DBZKaiMusicRevival will save the dub, at least. Maybe they'll uh...Use tracks they can use properly.

This is just awful, i lost pretty much all interest in watching this. What's even more insulting is that the footage actually looks really good when the colors are fixed!
Everyone looks like puke with green tint. Just lifeless. Goku looks so sickly with that skin color...

I think we of Kaanzenshu should try to get Funimation to color correct the footage for their dub. Make a petition or whatever, i just want to enjoy the English Kai dub without such horrible colors.

I never thought I'd say this but... In this case I'm sad that Funimation is no longer using replacement music.

I'd love an improved dub of the Buu arc, but this music is just ruining this part of the show (the placement of it, at least).

Leave FUNi out of this, they will probably make everything too dark & crop the sides to say "this is for the hardcore fans, 4:3!"
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Exactly asking the devil to do the work is never a good idea. Toei Animation already screwed up with the original source and FUNimation would make it even worse than it already is.

Just imagine this:

"Hey now, should we make this darker so it looks better? Yeah great idea remaster it!"

The new eyecatch at least looks better proportioned than the previous one. The music is growing on me, but it still sounds kind of ridiculous and chirpy, especially during the scenes that aren't light or comical. I liked the pacing of this episode, to think that they'll show the Goten and Trunks fight already! Looking forward to that, finally a proper battle to hear if at least the music during those is going to be decent.

I'm glad that they used the old, split-screen style eye catch that they used for most of the previous arcs. I wish they would of stuck with Goku's Kamehameha/Genki Dama transition into the eye catches, though.

This episode was better in some respects... but the music placing in the scene where Goku returns... yeah. I sort of see where they're going with this. Actually it kind of reminds me of the Gokuden super nintendo games, especially 2 when Goku returns at the Tenkaichi Budokai. It's also an upbeat theme with that reunion. Except in a game that works, but here... it kind of misses the point entirely.

Also all of these episodes could do with at least 1 more minute of footage. Every time in every scene they cut it just a little too fast. It's not by much, but there's almost no breathing time. If they cut the whole punching machine thing from this episode, the editing would've been great, I'm sure of it. Now it's just... okay-ish :p

Also always remember that if something is edited well, you don't notice it. If you notice it, someone is not doing their job correctly (or probably in this case, is being forced to cram too much into an episode).

I am looking forward to next episode A LOT though :p Goten VS Trunks is a good fight that I really like :p Especially because all of the reactions :D And it's the first Dragon Ball Kai Buu Arc fight!

I just remembered something else I thought when I watched this episode, the cropping really bothered me in this one in some of the scenes, I don't know why they insist in cropping heads instead of bodies, I mean, if you cut space from below the neck is not as jarring as cutting Gohan's head in half, for example.

Man now I'm starting to miss the kikuchi replacement score for Kai. Hell even the ocean dub mega man music sounds better then this new score. If the new score starts to get worse and worse I might just buy season 7,8, and 9 on blu once funimation releases them.

Faulconer score was not that bad. Its just really overrated by the casual fans.

Kay, watching the episode as I make this post.

1: Really digging the recap music.
2: Nice timing on the end of the recap and the start of the opening, as well. That shot was nicely executed.
3: Opening's grown on me so much...-wipes tear-
4: Title theme is still wonky to me. But I like the new background.
5: Loving japanese Videl for this bit.
6: Oh, gosh, Mr. Satan's voice feels so different though...
7: At least there ARE moments of silence.
8: Ooh, I like the track that starts while showing Vegeta training.
9: Mr. Satan's scene is actually pretty alright, but that track is a bit unfitting, as lovely as it is.
10: Goku's just too cool for school, I guess.
11: Oh Gosh, am I in Goron City now?
12: The pacing feels really nice!
13: Is the....Is the narrator okay?
14: NEP theme is beginning to warm up to me a bit.

Overall, I enjoyed it. This isn't dead to me yet! Next episode looks exciting!
