Vote for Budokai 3!

Post by dbboxkaifan » Sun Apr 27, 2014 7:38 am

On May 3, 2014 the YouTuber SomecallmeJohnny will be reviewing one of the three games listed on the poll and one of them happens to be Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 which really is the best of all in there, so I thought I'd ask you guys if you didn't mind to just vote for Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 is currently winning the race by 2749 votes over the ones that have 1322 (Journey) and 790 (Guacamelee).

Link: http://strawpoll.me/1585989

So even if you don't care about it just show your contribution as a Dragon Ball fan for a Dragon Ball game that happens to be Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 in this case.

Yes, but Budokai 3 is much easier to review, as Journey is like, the most open-ended thing ever.

I fail to see how Journey is any easier to review than Budokai 3?

You talk about the gameplay mechanics; the emergent interaction with the multiplayer, the unique delivery of its gameplay, and the pros and cons.

There's the story and you break down how it's told, why it's effective and what could be done better etc.

Something being 'open ended' doesn't make it any harder to review. You'll still going down the exact same components that a traditional game like Budokai is made up of.

If a journalist has trouble doing that then they should probably consider another profession.

EDIT: For the record, I voted for Budokai 3 on the basis that it's not been reviewed or spoken about in ages but it is absolutely nowhere near the caliber of creativity that Journey possesses.

I completely see your points. I was in a slightly shaky mindset during my reply. I agree with everything you said at the end. Although, Budokai 2 is also in the list, so that'll make a double review, so hazzah.

Yes it is.

I play games for their gameplay aspect not to admire how pretty the work that the developers/artists put into it. If this were the case then people would have also loved Dragon Ball: Ultimate Blast which is an interactive game like Journey, as well as Rain, Dragon's Lair and others.

Journey graphically is an amazing game and has a superb soundtrack but as I've said it, what I look for in a game is the gameplay because that's the most important part for me. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is addictive due to its gameplay not the graphics or music, although they're also ace too.

By the way, thanks to those that voted for Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3.

I entirely disagree and this isn't the first time I've found your view of games entirely disagreeable, to put it extremely lightly. Anything that breaks the mold and doesn't have what you consider 'traditional gameplay' results in you seemingly shoving it aside and disregarding entirely.

To me, that's a totally backwards way of thinking and is incredibly toxic to the progression of video games as both a form of entertainment as well as an art form.

Ultimate Blast is not an 'interactive game' (whatever that means) like Journey. Ultimate Blast presents itself as a fighter but it relies on a chance mechanic - a straight up no-no in games design. People didn't like it because it has no worth; it's just a badly designed game. There is no direct skill involved like you would expect from a fighter; you simply pray for the best and if you fail, it's because you had bad luck. That's shitty games design. It isn't bad simply because it tries to be a 'play your own anime' episode, it's bad because it. is. poorly. designed.

Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, and many more all do the whole 'play your own movie' and they're all critically acclaimed. Why? Because they're well designed and present gameplay that relies on fast decision making, character judgement instead purely hitting button presses with some skill. It's a different type of game and one that has a heck of a lot of worth.

It's not a debate over graphics vs. gameplay. It's you simply failing to understand that there isn't one type of way to design a game and therefore shitting on everything else entirely ignorantly.

It's absolutely fine to dislike that style of game but your reasons for doing so are entirely unfounded and make very little sense.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that. This isn't exactly the place for what's a game and what isn't but I see this view a lot and it bugs the shit out of me.

EDIT: On a reread, it does come across a bit of a personal attack. Take it as a more of a rant about that general line of thinking rather than an all out assault.

I grew up in the 90's and so my definition of real games is different than what we have today, so yeah I'm a bit outdated regarding that but to be honest I don't really care since the games I play are usually what I'm into not novel/interactive games. I know that I don't fit in with today's gaming standards but this is why I stick to Nintendo.

Call of Duty sell millions of copies and they're successful does it mean they're great games? No. Just because something's highly acclaimed doesn't mean it's good either.

It's all subjective overall, but yeah to me, Budokai 3 > Guacamelee > Journey.

By the way, Telltale's The Walking Dead is an interactive game which is very addictive and I'm happy that it won over 70 GotY awards it deserved it! :)

I wouldn't say Journey is better/worse than B2 or 3. They're both entirely different types of games. I love Journey. It's a beautiful game with great music/atmosphere. I'd even wager that the whole point of the game is just to walk through some beautiful environments. Budokai 2/3, on the other hand, is an anime-based fighting game. Both games are successful in they do, and should be enjoyed as they were intended to be enjoyed. I wouldn't play B2 or 3 to see beautiful, detailed graphics....and I wouldn't play Journey for fast-paced fighting and action.

That said, I voted for Budokai because I think that would be a much more interesting review to hear.

I grew up in the 90's too. I totally understand that line of thinking, I just think it's worth being open minded about those other types of games rather than dismissing them purely because of their mechanics or lack thereof.

Regarding Call of Duty. They're not bad games, they're actually reasonably well put together shooters on a mechanical level; it's just unfortunate that they make very few overt changes with each iteration. When the mechanics become broken and the game feels less polished, you get CoD: Ghosts which holds an average of 7/10 from critics - a score that by modern standards is pretty low. The hate CoD gets mainly stems from its community and the developer's lack of post-release support.

I agree that copies sold and general critical acclaim doesn't always equate to quality but I don't think Call of Duty is a particularly strong example. I certainly wasn't implying anything to the contrary. I simply mentioned those examples were well reviewed as a means to express why they're good.

Your implication that people enjoyed Journey purely on an aesthetic level just got to me. People enjoyed Journey not just for the immersive and atmospheric world it created but also for the incredibly smart gameplay. Whilst the multiplayer aspect of it is very unconventional, the actual base gameplay isn't much different from your classic puzzle platformers - manipulating the environment through your inputs to progress.

My point is simply; like what you like, that's all good, just don't dismiss a game entirely because its mechanics don't fall in line with what you consider a 'true game'. I just find that to be poor reasoning. Dislike it for reason - because you find the plot unengaging or you find the mechanics uninspired and uninteresting. I just find the whole "I don't like it, it's not a game" to be an archaic and close minded view of an ever-evolving medium. Heck, you said you liked The Walking Dead; that's not much different from Beyond Two Souls! The latter actually contains more active control!

Anyways, I have no bad feelings towards you, it's just a subject I'm passionate about and am lucky to talk about on a weekly basis. This is a line of thinking that comes up a heck of a lot when we review these type of games and I just find it very frustrating to deal with. Sorry to put you in the center of the rant. I'm sure a moderator will come in here and tell me to keep on-topic.

Yes but if you actually read what's been discussed so far, you'll see that wasn't the root of the issue.

It wasn't? By your previous replies, I assumed you would agree with my point. One is not better than the other. People may prefer one over the other, but that's a completely different issue.

Oh I do agree, don't get me wrong. It was just that it seemed misplaced given the debate that between me and dbboxkaifan was about recognising interactive drama as a viable form of gameplay and should be recognised as such.

I agree. The mere term 'interactive' (regarding a game) implies gameplay.

Well there's a thing called opinion. It depends on the gameplay you like. So maybe the fighting game appeals to someone more. I really do have to play Journey though, I own it and I've never touched it yet.

Also I love Somecallmejohnny's reviews. I don't know how or why. I guess it's the passion and personality. Normally a voice tone like his would bore me, but for some reason it doesn't here. Instead I just keep coming back for more and more. I even check out the LP channel, and sometimes that BSC channel. I of course voted for Budokai 2/3 as I wanted to see it since the Budokai 1 review which while it was real awesome to hear about his Dragon Ball experience, it kinda went on too long.

Also the voting deadline is May 3rd, not the day the game(s) will be reviewed.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

As it stands right now Budokai 3's in 1st place, Guacamelee in 2nd and Journey in 3rd so Budokai 3 will probably win the poll.

Hopefully he'll talk about the Yamamoto music controversy even though everyone kinda knows it already.
