Maybe nostalgia is blinding me.
Though Z looked bad, they used videotape masters for GT which look the same as the original broadcast on Fuji TV and have clear audio. It was mono for some reason, though.
For your information, the GT special was also broadcast, but not as a TV special. It was split into two episodes like how Tree of Might originally aired in syndication. Both the two parts had the same ending credits.

I don't remember when I started watching Dragon Ball Z on the International Channel, but I believe it would had to have been in mid-2001, which is when I moved back to New York City and received digital cable for the first time.
It was not subtitled, and it had the original next episode previews. I distinctly remember one of the DBZ websites back then was running a special page where they would throw up a translated script for the episode that was to air on IC that night, so people could follow along. I can't remember which site it was, though.

From what I know, both Z and GT had the next episode previews, and for some reason, Z had them after the ending like the Dragon Boxes. Also, the ones originally aired with a notice of a movie ticket lottery were cut short, which means that they might have used film masters originally printed for early Japanese TV airings.
IIRC, International Channel's deal was with Fuji TV which may explain the difference in film masters used. It seemed to be independent but concurrent with Funimation's deal with Toei.
