The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I don't particularly mind Boo's origins (not that I take into consideration anything Toriyama says about DB these days), I mind the fact that Toriyama changes already established things too often instead of providing new info.

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I'm honestly not sure how to feel about Boo's new origin, as it almost builds him up to be something even more than he was...and, well, he was already quite a huge deal, so it's not like he really needs any more build-up. Really like the new details on 17 and 18 though, especially their names, though now I'm gonna have to try and find a way to work that into my fic, gah. And the Mr. Satan's training origins thing is particularly neat, and I'm glad that I'm only halfway through (if even that) writing the new chapter of it, because I can definitely make use of that!

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
With the old backstory I got the idea, that Bibidi could have created him like how Kami created Shenlong; build a model and then work some magic(in Bibidi's case the extremely Dark variant) to bring it to life.
With the new backstory it reminds me a bit of Piccolo in the sense, that his creation had nothing to do with the guy/s who eventually unleashed his evil on the universe. They were just the spiteful bastards trying to get all the power by summoning an all-powerful being to do their evil deeds for them.

From one (sporadic) fanfic author to another, it's probably something that needn't be worried about or forced in. Technically, the Q&A says it's their names "from back when they were humans," and since they call each other "Seventeen" and "Eighteen" all throughout the manga, they probably don't even remember their real names for one reason or another.Gyt Kaliba wrote:Really like the new details on 17 and 18 though, especially their names, though now I'm gonna have to try and find a way to work that into my fic, gah.

True, it's probably best if I just keep it in the back of my mind as something to know for if an opportunity does arise for it, rather than shoehorning it in. ^_^;Kaboom wrote:From one (sporadic) fanfic author to another, it's probably something that needn't be worried about or forced in. Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I think the intention of it(assuming there actually is one) is to make Boo seem like a grander final villain. I don't know if he really needed that element to him since he was already an ancient evil that killed gods but it does make seem like a bigger player in the DB Cosmos. I'm just glad Toriyama is answering/being asked questions beyond who his favorite character is and what Sun Wukong has to do with DB.Hellspawn28 wrote:Anyone starting to like Buu's new origin? Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I think that's my exact problem with it is that he didn't really need to be built up any bigger. Say what you will about how unneeded Goku's mother was, or 17 and 18's real names, or other things like that, but at least that's all building on stuff that we didn't already have. This Boo information though...it's on top of everything we already had for Boo, and just feels kinda extraneous to me.Makaioshin wrote:I think the intention of it(assuming there actually is one) is to make Boo seem like a grander final villain. Not that aren't perfect; what with those stare-into-your-soul death glares that were their sole real claim to villainy.

....what is this supposed to mean?. During numerous iterations of this cycle, he absorbed the evil elements of mankind, becoming steadily more violent.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I found the fact that android 17 became a park ranger very bizarre. Why would Toriyama choose that as his profession? It doesn't suit his personality at all in my opinion. He never showed signs of being particularly fond of nature like android 16 was. I also thought #17 couldn't be revived in the first place?

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
It does seem a little out of nowhere, but maybe it's his way of living up to 16's memory? Could be reading a bit too much into it, but other than how random it seems, it does seem to fit well enough with what we see in his cameo at the end of the series (which also shows that he was indeed revived).ss4songoku wrote:I found the fact that android 17 became a park ranger very bizarre. Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
I find this new information on 17 quite intriguing.
He ended up with the biggest family of anyone so far in DBZ. Everyone else has 1 or 2 children. He went the extra mile and adopted. And married to a zoologist no less!
I can already see the fanfics that will come out of this.
I wonder if AT will ever say what's up with Tien and Chaoz later on too. xD Next thing we know, Yamcha will also be married to random girl #3 by the EoZ.
Next random things I want to know:
Did Marron/Bra ever trained? Did Marron babysit Pan and Bra?
What was Videl's job after marrying, if any?
Did future Trunks went to look for Dende in his time-line? Did the Galactic Patrol paid him a visit for all his Time-Traveling??

He did show up in the middle of a park or something with a hunter / ranger outfit in the Buu arc.ss4songoku wrote:I found the fact that android 17 became a park ranger very bizarre. You know, it makes you wonder what Dr.Gero's son actually looked like if #16 is based off of him. 16 is freaking enormous after all.

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
17 info cracked me up. At this point it's so clear At has absolutely no idea about GT other than SSJ4 design
And yeah, Toei needs to make some official canon already, the differences between animve/specials/GT and AT's manga & new projects/info is getting way too big to work together

He already has:soulnova wrote:I wonder if AT will ever say what's up with Tenshinhan and Chaoz later on too. xD
Kendō Kobayashi: Please tell us about the lives of the characters after [the end of the series]. (Particularly Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu.)
Akira Toriyama: First, a word of warning: I am a considerably arbitrary creator, so I’ve imagined what happens after for these three for the first time just now. The possibility that I have made mistakes about the characters’ backgrounds is great. Proceed with caution.
Yamcha’s Epilogue:
Like you, KenKoba1, he has the dilemma of loving women but not being good around them, so he is still wandering blindly in search of the ideal partner he won’t be nervous around. He’s even worked in a host club, but because of his nervousness, it didn’t go well and he was fired. His livelihood is mainly working together with Pu’er as a freelance bodyguard, but he occasionally goes to Tenshinhan’s to help with the farm, as well.
Tenshinhan’s Epilogue:
Stoic Tenshinhan mainly does farming in addition to his training. He can split into multiple bodies and grow extra arms, so harvesting the crops goes quickly. He was found by Lunch, who fell in love with him at first sight and had been constantly pursuing his whereabouts, and even reluctantly lived together with her; but she wasn’t cut out for farming, and Tenshinhan has no interest in romance, so she left after just a few days. After that, it seems Lunch apparently stops in from time to time.
Chiaotzu’s Epilogue:
Naturally, he helps out with farming together with Tenshinhan, but his work utilizing his telekinetic powers has a reputation for its efficiency, and he is hired at an expensive rate by farmers nearby, so he apparently has a surprisingly large amount of money saved away.

Not that that is surprising. How many random people in his works pop up to screw someone else out of what they have and/or for money?

Re: The Newest Batch of Toriyama Tidbits...
Toei has nothing to do with an "official canon". I stand by the tradition of the mangaka's creations being the canon, and everything else (anime adaptations, movies where the creator isn't doing the story, etc) to be noncanonical fluff (can be fun, but when it comes to discussing continuity itself or character feats, the source material prevails).Basaku wrote:17 info cracked me up. Kinda like how with Saint Seiya, I count the canon as the original manga and Saint Seiya: Next Dimension (the official sequel/prequel by Kurumada). Everything else from the anime adaptation to the movies (from classic movies to Toei's botched attempt at the Heaven Chapter that Kuru retconned with his own manga to the new CG Movie) to all the commissioned but contradictory mangas from other creators (Saint Seiya: Episode G, Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou, Kurumada Suikoden) and the GT of the Franchise (Saint Seiya: Omega) is all just harmless fluff that I can enjoy without worrying about how it effects the main story.
Same with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Fist of the North Star. Canon=Original Manga, Everything else=fun non-canon material.
Hell, I do the same thing with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. To me, its continuity is the original Mirage Comics from the mid 80s (I've rather enjoyed Eastman and Laird's run on the book).
So yeah, for Dragon Ball, I count the original manga, Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return!, Battle of Gods, and Jaco the Galactic Patrolman (With Dragon Ball Minus) as canon. Dragon Ball Online's an iffy subject as I don't know if they abandoned that material or not (maybe we'll see it reflected in future series' down the line, who knows...).
It makes it so much simpler to set rules like these for what counts.
