There is no "underdog story". Neither Goten nor Trunks are underdogs. Trunks being trained by Vegeta and Goten being trained by Gohan means nothing as far as one being better than the other. And even if Goten was the underdog, it didn't mean he was going (or was expect) to lose, as the series has proven time and time again in the past.
