This forum needs an 'off topic' board

Post by deadguy366 » Fri May 02, 2014 6:08 pm

For talking about all things unrelated to DB. This is a great site and I love talking about DB but sometimes it's cool to talk about other things with people who have similar interests. Just a thought

This has been asked a lot of times in the past but is always (and presumably will forever be) shot down by site's staff. If you want to be talk off topic with members here, you can use the sites IRC chatroom, the Skype chatroom or through the various social media outlets like Twitter.

This gets asked a lot and it's turned down every time. It's not going to happen.

The list goes on.

Off-topic sections tend to become a main focus and detract users from actually talking about the very thing the site is built around. I'd much rather keep things as they are even if talking points do wear thin at times.

You WANT a off topic forum, not "this needs a off topic forum"

Now if Kanzenshuu was a forum then I'll agree but its a website

I do think this forum needs a off-topic section. Just look at other message boards. Most of them have that section. Just look at Pokecommunity's forum. That is a HUGE forum, and they also have an off-topic. It irks me when VegettoEX said that the message board would be downgrading because of it. I don't see how that section would be a problem now. Just pick a few new moderators and other stuff, and you are good to go.

I don't think we need an off-topic section, but I really wouldn't mind more leniency on Toriyama's non-DB related works.

I'm conflicted on it honestly. While I feel it wouldn't necessarily detract from it as much as VegettoEX and others fear...it very well could do that and worse. It just depends on the community in question, because I've seen a few forums make it work, whereas others end up devolving into the off topic stuff getting far more focus than the main section. So it's a gamble really.

I do agree that a place to talk about Toriyama's other works would be nice though.

I don't think it would work because DB is fairly old - the slight influx of new material going on now would be completely overwhelmed by literally everything else being an allowed topic of discussion.

I think a 'Toriyama's other works and collaborations' sub-forum could be worthwhile, even if only because it's such a niché subject that there's really nowhere else out there to talk about them.

Yeah, at least that would be nice & harmless to have. Plus, it's Toriyama related, who is DB related.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I can't think of another place where I'd want to talk about other Toriyama work. So I second this notion.

A good chunk of the members here chat over Twitter so there's that. I'm not really screaming for an OT board but I would suggest a little chat box to be installed at the bottom of the forum to replace the chat room.

There are plenty of forums that have OT sections yet keep focus on the main subject, Smash Boards being the best example I can think of. I can only think of one forum I go on that went down hill due to an OT section and that was due more to the fact it was one of those "be random and wacky" spam/joke thread OT sections.

The difference is, Smash Bros is a series that is continually getting new things, whereas Dragon Ball isn't. Like Rocketman said, you allow people to talk about whatever, then the whole incentive to think up topics relating to Dragon Ball during down time is gone.

Rocketman touched on this a little bit. Dragon Ball is old and more or less done. Smash is relatively new, at the very least 15 years DB's junior. And on top of that, new Smash games are coming out. We get a guidebook every now and then, some off-the-cuff tidbits from Toriyama, spin-off series that regurgitate the story or sell card games, but outside of Battle of Gods, we don't get anything that's... new new.

If Tumblr is anything to go by, there is a constant influx of new Smash material coming out. People can't stop complaining about heels or making their own "X Character enters the ring!" photoshops, or talking about Donkey Kong's expanding dong. We honestly don't get anything with that type of longevity.

DBZF.uk got off topic threads sections. 5 infact. The Db section still the most popular. Though Kanzenshuu don't need a off topic section. Since its a website as well

You've said that twice already, but what does Kanzenshuu being a website have to do with not needing an off-topic forum? I just find it interesting you took the time to specifically point that out twice, haha

Regardless, like Gyt Kaliba, I've also seen forums pretty much ruined because of an OT section. A good number of them, too. The same goes for a chatbox. And it's not like we don't have other alternatives.

There's probably a reason this site has the one of the most active forums on the Internet. Most of the other forums I've been to can go several days without posts, and they just start to lose focus. So, the moderators here must be doing something right.

Also, there used to be an introductions section? I've done those on other forums, but never thought that this site would ever have had it before.
