Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Piccolo: He doesn't even look after his kid, I look after his kid.

*Sigh* Really?

Kind of a boring episode, but I'm curious to see how Cell is handled.

First: Really.

Second: I'm not... really sure how we could have made a lot of those scenes any less "boring" without making them goofy as hell.

I'm not sure how this "Piccolo is a better dad" meme started, but it's your series.

It's not like this is something that isn't officially addressed:
The World’s Best Round-Table Discussion wrote:As much as Goku didn’t do many fatherly things, Piccolo was Gohan’s surrogate father.
Toriyama: Goku isn’t interested in child-rearing, probably. He’s completely unqualified to be a father. (laughs) He doesn’t even have a job. Goku wants nothing other than to get stronger, and it feels like he doesn’t have any other instincts. So he shows absolutely no interest in things he’s not interested in. I’d bet he wouldn’t have had any interest in marriage, either.

While I've enjoyed the last two episodes, I feel the major scenes could have easily occupied a single episode comfortably.

That's just some random interviewer claiming that about Piccolo. Toriyama’s joke comes from a place of poking fun at the irresponsible side of Goku if the dragon world were the real world (i.e., dude doesn’t even have a job, no education, etc.). And that’s definitely true, but I fail to see how Piccolo is some amazing father figure to Gohan. The only time Piccolo looked after Gohan in-place of Goku was when Piccolo kidnapped and abused Gohan so he could use Gohan as a weapon against Nappa.

I loved this episode! The whole Piccolo fusing with Kami and it being reminiscent from fusing with Nail was pretty hilarious, "lower.." hehe and of course the you can win chant.

Cell was eerie creepy. Err can't wait to see more of him.

Holy shit you managed to out-LittleKuriboh Freeza with Cell's appearance. Damn that song was creepy.

Wow, I disagree with the boring part. This was AMAZING. The scene between Piccolo and Kami, while not really played for laughs had a serious undertone that you guys pulled off beautifully. And Cell, dear god he was scary. I thought the original was pretty scary for Dragon Ball's doing, but whooh, this was defenitely a few notches above that. The CSI music was great. There were some jokes I didn't get or didn't think were funny I guess... The sweating purple is sort of lost on me, or if that was just it, didn't think it was too funny. Don't know what the soundeffects were when Bulma clapped the "coconuts" together (the last two times she did that). If it's a Monty Python joke I'm gonna be disappointed in myself.

Jokes that made me laugh were Mr Popo dropping the beat, hand sanitizer, and Gohan wondering in what way he'd turn out like his father, among others.

No, good solid episode, might be the best one in quite a while :p (to clarify, not that I didn't like the previous ones, they all have good things, but this one, for me, stood out more than the previous ones :p).

It was Pac-man the Waka-Waka sound effect.

Well, in Abridged universe, Piccolo is better father in my opinion, really loved Nail and Kami tricking Piccolo and Cell introduction.

"Lower."

Fun episode, as always.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I expect a large part of the fanbase to call this episode boring due to the more subtle jokes and Kami's speech but I fucking loved it. Seriously I could be here all day talking about what I loved but I have work to do.
Awesome job

Loved it. However, I hope Popo goes back to his normal self. When he's high, he starts to look like that sissy Mr. Popo from the regular anime.

Not my favorite episode from this season. I get that a lot of the jokes were related to previous episodes, I just didn't find them that funny this time around, maybe because I was sorta expecting them.

As for what I DID like

Cell's introduction, that was very creepy, just as I was hoping for.
Vegeta's reasoning of why he lost to Android 18.
Roshi discussing 18's "attributes" with Krillin. It was a very entertaining exchange and I liked the contrast between Krillin's and Kame Sennin's perspectives.

Very impressed by the newest episode. The more serious tone this episode took made it probably the most memorable episode of the season so far. Piccolo and Kami's dialogue was arguably better than the original series and Cell's first appearance was stellar.

Opening scene was funny. The Pacman thing was random. Piccolo and Nail scenes always make me laugh, and I loved the callback to the infamous motivational speech. And Vegeta's "have you ever met me? I'm me!" cracked me up.
