Piccolo and Vegeta discuss the afterlife

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Piccolo and Vegeta discuss the afterlife

Post by Mr. Piccolo » Thu May 15, 2014 11:27 pm

In the English dub of the anime, right before Vegeta sacrifices himself in an attempt to kill Fat Buu, he asks Piccolo if he would see Goku in the afterlife. Piccolo states that Vegeta would not be allowed to keep his body in the afterlife and that he would not see Goku, as Goku’s keeping his body in the afterlife and going to King Kai's planet were special rewards for his good behavior while alive on Earth. Vegeta, on the other hand, spent most of his life pursuing evil, selfish goals.

My first question is whether this discussion took place in the manga or not, or if this was something in the anime only. Was this discussion in the Japanese-language anime as well?

Additionally, what fate did Piccolo predict for Vegeta? Was he stating that he would go to Hell because he was evil, or only that he would have no body? I assume he was stating that Vegeta would have no body AND go to Hell.

Finally, why did Vegeta assume Piccolo would know the answer to his question? Did he know enough about Kami to guess that Piccolo would be knowledgeable about the afterlife?
Kami is my co-pilot.

The conversation is indeed in the original Japanese version of both the manga and anime, and if the way you've described it in the dub is accurate, then it's one of the handful of examples of FUNimation dubbing things fairly faithfully during the Boo arc. I'm not sure how specific we've had the system described to us, but if I recall, most bad or even average people end up spending some time in Hell (at least I assume so; it's gotta be there for a reason, right?) before the evil from their souls is wiped clean and they're lined up for reincarnation. Don't quote me exactly on that one, though. Finally, I would indeed assume that Piccolo knows the ins and outs of this system due to gaining all of Kami's knowledge when the two of them merged.

Thank you for the information. I thought this was one of the most poignant scenes in the series and I thought it was interesting that it took place between two characters who did not typically get along well at all. Perhaps reuniting with Kami mellowed Piccolo out and made it easier for him to get along with Vegeta.

Piccolo has been dead, while Vegeta only remained dead for a short period of time. He probably thought he had experience, aside knowing he had joined with Kami.
