My YouTube
Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

Damn that sucks. I seen some clips of the show with the original boradcast audio and man it sounds way better then the mono audio we get on the dragon boxes.AnimeMaakuo wrote:No, sorry.JEFFMAN219 wrote:Hey guys is there anyway the we can watch the Japanese version of DBZ with the original broadcast audio?
Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
They are all mixed in mono, original broadcast or not. Dragon Box is from a poorer-quality source. All mono means is that there is one channel of audio as opposed to more, and channel count is not indicative of how crappy each channel sounds.JEFFMAN219 wrote: Damn that sucks. Unless you managed to snag recordings off of Japanese TV (raw or fansubbed) from back in the late 90's, sorry, you're outta luck.JEFFMAN219 wrote:Hey guys is there anyway the we can watch the Japanese version of DBZ with the original broadcast audio?
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
Some fansubs have good quality audio. Assuming one wants to go through the trouble of finding them.theoriginalbilis wrote:Unless you managed to snag recordings off of Japanese TV (raw or fansubbed) from back in the late 90's, sorry, you're outta luck.JEFFMAN219 wrote:Hey guys is there anyway the we can watch the Japanese version of DBZ with the original broadcast audio?
Also I doubt they are readily available anymore because the series has been out on legal media for a long time now.
Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
I ripped the audio from one of my worst fansub tape's and i think it sounds good, especially on my TVFulicer wrote:They are all mixed in mono, original broadcast or not. Sounds awesome! I love you, Shinny! ^_^
I almost got a bunch of fansub tapes, but I was beat out at the last minute. T_T

Was the hate for Kai largely unjustified?

The story of Kai's production is far more interesting than the actual product.

It's interesting that really old, crappy-quality VHS fansubs can have decent audio compared to legit releases. The only problem is that some of them have a hiss in the background, but I'm sure you can filter that out. Here's an example:

Oh and it's courtesy of Anime Labs. Goku calls Freeza a sucker.
not as good as kei's recordings but it's something.

Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
I've got a question.
As has been discussed before, Toei most likely threw out the original broadcast audio masters for the TV episodes. The most likely given reason is that, back in those days, there was no market for a home video release of a TV series, so Toei probably thought it pointless for the space to be taken up by audio masters that would (in their minds, at the time) never be used again after the initial airing. While we've never received official confirmation that this is the reason why the audio masters were probably thrown out (or for that matter never received official confirmation that they were thrown out at all), this explanation does make sense.
Having said that......
While they definitely appealed to different core audiences, there was another iconic anime made by Toei of (roughly) comparable length and popularity that was, for a good chunk of time, produced at the same time as DBZ: Sailor Moon. Using the air dates of the episodes on Wikipedia as a reference (DBZ here, Sailor Moon here), it looks like DBZ was airing episode 130 in Japan when Sailor Moon aired its first episode in Japan, and when DBZ finished airing in Japan, Sailor Moon was up to episode 161 (of 200 episodes in total). All this to say that, during the same time that DBZ was being produced by Toei, Toei also produced 161 episodes of Sailor Moon.
Sooooo.....what's interesting here is that, even though North America got crappy audio masters that were comparable in quality to the audio masters we got for DBZ, Toei did keep the original audio masters for Sailor Moon and, when it came time to release R2 DVDs, that's the audio source that was used. From what I've been told, the reason for this is due partially to the fact that prior to the DVDs, the Sailor Moon TV series was released on laser disc (but correct me if I'm wrong). So I'm just wondering....why was the decision made to preserve Sailor Moon's audio masters and release it to home video, when DBZ didn't get the same treatment despite being comparable in popularity, episode count, and production timelines? Do we know why?

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
Against all normal odds of the time, Sailor Moon got a full home video release at the time on laserdisc. That's why its audio masters were kept.

Yeah, it does seem kind of odd, doesn't it? It makes one wonder...do we know for sure why this decision was made, or was it a seemingly random one?Puto wrote:Against all normal odds of the time, Sailor Moon got a full home video release at the time on laserdisc. EDIT/PS: I'll keep this brief since it's off-topic, but if you're a Sailor Moon fan, then HO. LY. CRAP is today a good day for you!

Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
I recall kei mentioned something about hardcore otakus loving magical girl anime or something, but I don't remember exactly.
Also worth noting that Sailor Moon is a lot easier to sell individual episodes of, since they're 'monster-of-the-day' standalone episodes rather than an ongoing narrative like Dragon Ball.

How are persistent background noises like that removed?
Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
With programs like Adobe Audition or Pro Tools etc. You sample the noise and the program will allow you to filter our that range of sound to your specification.
It can be delicate at times and will sometimes leave your audio sounding somewhat hollow but that's fairly easy to rectify if it does happen.

You can damage the file that way if you're not careful.AjayLikesGaming wrote:With programs like Adobe Audition or Pro Tools etc. You sample the noise and the program will allow you to filter our that range of sound to your specification.

Re: Broadcast audio of DBZ
Yeah, definitely. That's what I was trying to get at with my comment about it sometimes sounding hollow. You end up cutting too much of the original audio and it loses any of the presence it once had. A bit of EQ can sometimes fix that but like you say, it's not always the case.AnimeMaakuo wrote:

Here's the same scene in better quality for comparison's sake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txY1ZiNCn2AFulicer wrote:It's interesting that really old, crappy-quality VHS fansubs can have decent audio compared to legit releases.
