I never understood this plot point. Surely Goku, at well below 1,000, couldn't have done anything to help against creatures that can actually pose a threat to Vegeta? They'd be better off planting a single Saibaman.
It was more of a matter of making things run smoother and faster.

Following your argument, Radditz would also be of no help to the likes of Nappa and Vegeta.
Of course he can, a power level of 15,000 is certainly more helpful than a guy whose weaker than a Saibaman they can just plant.
He's basically as strong as a Saibamen so he's obviously not gonna be able to stand against fighters that give Vegeta or even Nappa real trouble. Almost all of the gang were stronger than Raditz and just look how much more overwhelming Nappa was in their fight compared to them.

If Goku was useless for Nappa and Vegeta, then Raditz was barely any better.

That's why neither of them were actually useless. They would prove a significant help in making the conquest of the planet be faster and smoother because they would help in managing the great number of opponents.

Is it possible that he was lying just to try and get Goku to come with them, since he knew that if he told Goku the truth - that he'd just been sent there to save himself from the fate of their home planet - that he probably wouldn't come? Maybe he thought that if he appealed to Goku's 'Saiyan pride', something he would have no way of knowing yet that Goku didn't have, it'd be more compelling than just 'hey, you were sent here to be safe, so why don't you come kill things with us'?
I guess, but if there really was no planet that Raditz, Vegeta, and Nappa wanted Goku to help them conquer, then what did Raditz tell Vegeta he was up to when he headed off to Earth? Though admittedly, this mysterious planet of super strong guys never gets mentioned again after Raditz dies.
I'm fairly sure Gyt Kaliba is referring to how Raditz approached Goku to have him join them, not that the story of a planet of strong inhabitants was a lie. IE: Strong planet exists, Saiya-jin's need more power via fighters, Raditz decides to enlist his long lost brother, lie's to him about his reasoning for being sent to Earth to play into his Saiya-jin pride, instead of saying "You were sent here to be safe and nothing more!" which could've been viewed as an insult to a Saiya-jin, ect.

Am I on the ball? :D
You are correct, that's exactly what I was referring to with the possible "lie" - though it does still leave the option open that Raditz was lying about the planet of strong fighters too.

Guess I may have been overthinking this though, based on the responses anyway. ^_^;

Nothing wrong with that, some of the most interesting topics come out of overthinking things, and personally, I greatly enjoy the idea of any Saiya-jin playing into anothers pride to get what they want. :lol:
I enjoy the Dragon Ball original AND Dub, even the VHS Fan-Sub's.
