Enma-daio/Yenma?

Why is Enma-daio translated as Yenma or Yemma on the DBZ dvd's?

It appears to be a misspelling of the Hindu name of Enma-ou, Yama. I believe they use Yama for the dub of Yu Yu Hakusho, another FUNi-dubbed anime.

I'm pretty sure the subtitled Japanese tracks spell it as Yama.

Also, I've seen an attendant in one episode which displayed the word "Yama" on his uniform.

I think it's Enma Daio on the Subs, Enma sound similar to Yenma, I'd say they got it right in the dub.

Normally I wouldn't be too happ with this sorta thing, but then again look at the translation of Kurrirn and Kaioken, meh, what can you do.

But is the characters on the sjow pronounce it as Enma? shoulnd't the subtitles display the name Enma instead of its Chinese counterpart?

The characters also speak aloud Ii-shinron, but the subtitles read Yi Xing Long. Part of it is the translator's perogative, and part of it is also knowing what exactly the names are, where they come from, and how they relate to both the language being spoken in and read in.

Well, if you're going to call the main character "Son Gokû" (Japanese version of the Chinese name), one could argue it would make sense to keep "Enma" as well.

"Shenlong" and the various "-xinglong" are something else altogether, as they kept their Chinese pronunciation even in the Japanese version.
