Right, but as people have said, the first anime is fundamentally a different series than the manga. Would a direct shot-for-shot adaptation of Sailor Moon's manga still come out that long?coola wrote:Original Sailor Moon is exactly 200 episodes long, guess Dragon Ball was unlucky to be choosed as a guinea pig, to see, if Toei could afford to make such half-baked remake, and still make lots of money, if that`s the case, then I'm kinda glad it was/still is a flop in Japan.
Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?

Well the manga is in total like sixty chapters or so long. Admittedly it's a monthly series so each chapter is considerably longer than Dragon Ball's chapters were, but... yeah no way would a direct, filler-free adaptation of Sailor Moon have been 200 episodes long. More like, oh... fifty, I'd say would be a fair estimate.B wrote:Right, but as people have said, the first anime is fundamentally a different series than the manga. Excuse my language, but why the fuck does it have to be about Dragon Ball Z?
If anything, they should start with Dragon Ball and then carry on forwards.
If you want a fresh new version of Dragon Ball Z then Dragon Ball Kai's your pick.
Dragon Ball Z this, Dragon Ball Z that, ugh there's much more of Dragon Ball than just Dragon Ball Z.
I guess FUNimation over-saturating the market with a shit-ton of Dragon Ball Z has something to do with it too.

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
I hear ya, man! The Z series, while awesome, simply overshadows the original far too much. Not just the US. Even Japan they skipped over the original series and still had the balls (
) to call their refreshed version Dragon Ball Kai, implying that it's either a new version of the entire series or the original. One instance where I prefer the international name, Dragon Ball Z Kai.

Sometimes Dragon Ball is too popular for its own good.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Sailor Moon is a franchise that has been dead since the 90's. DBZ still had a decent run from 2000 - 2009 while Sailor Moon ended back in 1999 in the US. Sailor Moon is a franchise that Japan and other parts of the world has not seen in a while.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Comparing the manga chapters to DBZ Manga chapters is a bit unfair since the former was a monthly series and the latter was a weekly series. Basically, a chapter of SM has more to it than a chapter of DBZ.
Sailor Moon was rereun until like 2004, and the manga was re-released in 2011. I wouldn't say it was "dead"Hellspawn28 wrote:Sailor Moon is a franchise that has been dead since the 90's. Other then re-releases, I don't think the series had a new animated series since the 90's. I know there was the live action series, but I hear that show was pretty bad.

Actually, a lot of hardcore fans, including me, consider the live-action to be superior to the first season of the anime.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Sailor Moon also have musicals, that run from 1993 to 2005, went hiatus, until 2013, with La Reconquista. Ms. Takeuchi really enjoyed these musicals, and even find Stars versions to be superior adaptation then anime. But to not get completely off topic, i agree, if there was another remake of DB, start from Goku childhood, not with Z portion of story.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Why not do a movie remake such as they have done with other popular series such as Gurren Lagann, Madoka, and even Clannad? Obviously those series are quite a bit shorter, but I think Toei could pull off doing long OVA's (or films) cutting out filler or unimportant canon focusing on the main plot. It is not intended to replace the original but update it for a younger audience or for older fans who want to see the series pulled off with modern standards of anime today! I think that could be a profitable route to go down.Daimo-Rukiri wrote:Sailor Moon has a pretty low episode count in comparison to Dragon Ball, DB would be a huge undertake but I'm sure they could reanimate dragon ball in less than 300 episodes if it's a direct manga cut.
Dragon Ball would be a much bigger project for Toei and Kai is still going on so it'd be quite awhile before any re-animations take place.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Let's not forget a massive 10-CD box set containing not only everything from the music score they were able to include, but also complete cue sheets in the liner notes!Kid Buu wrote:Anyway. Was the live action show that good. The reviews that I read for it was bad and I remember watching it for live action day at my local anime/manga club, it was pretty bad going by the first episode 1. Over the acting (in a bad way) and awful special effects even for a Toku show.

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Even if the production values weren't always there, the show's heart was certainly in the right place. What I loved about PGSM was the character flair. The villains were more fleshed out, as opposed to being generic good guys. They had more understandable motives rather than being evil for the sake of being evil. Likewise, the Inner Senshi all had strong personalities like in the cartoon, but the live-action made them internally conflicted. Throughout the series, they all had great character arcs and it definitely had a great "coming-of-age" feel to it.Hellspawn28 wrote:Was the live action show that good. Well think about it like this: if you go to a SM forum, people debate between the anime or live-action being better. Does anyone here debate Dragon Ball: Evolution being better than Dragon Ball: the anime?

Re: Why is Toei reanimating Sailor Moon but not DBZ?
Toei Animation gives everything SM fans want and the same Toei Animation does not give DB fans what they seem to want. What is the basic conclusion?kenisu3000 wrote:Let's not forget a massive 10-CD box set containing not only everything from the music score they were able to include, but also complete cue sheets in the liner notes!Kid Buu wrote:Anyway. My guess is that DB is too popular and the fanbase is mostly casual. You can sell every single shit with Dragon Ball logo placed on it. They can cut half of production funds and still make the same amount of money. I also think that they don't have a slight idea that there is a market for uncropped Blu-rays, complete soundtrack release etc. The only people we can blame is ourselves.
Second guess: Their decisions are probably based on production costs and earnings of Dragon Boxes. They did a decent job and it didn't give expected results? Toei only knows.

1st trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9Ft3viBgtQ
Ryo Hirohashi - Luna (I only know her from Yamada role in Working! She have this authority like voice)

Kenji Nojima - Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclo ... hp?id=4667
Opening song is called "Moon Pride", ending song is called "Moonbow", both by Momoiro Clover Z
Well then, so far it looks like that only Ms. Kotono Mitsuishi reprise her role, i really wonder how well will Crystal sells in Japan and worldwide, i guess it and Kai Buu Saga will have DVD/Blu-ray premier at similar time.

Given what I've heard from the trailer, she's definitely using the same voice she used for her role as Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It's really hard to not hear it, honestly... Especially since I'm giving Sonic X a re-watch right now. ^^''coola wrote: Ryo Hirohashi - Luna (I only know her from Yamada role in Working! She have this authority like voice)

Not really feeling it as it looks generic. The charisma seems to be gone, but I guess that is what happens when Ikuhara isn't your director.
