Kid Trunks' first English dub appearance

Post by samuraix123 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 1:36 am

Hello! Does anyone else think that kid Trunks sounds awful in his first appearance when Gohan comes over to get Bulma to make him a costume? I'm speaking about the Dub here. the voice actor just seems to grumble or something like that. like they're struggling to voice him. anybody else get this?

I haven't watched the dub in quite a few years, but yeah I do remember kid trunks sounding really different to the rest of the performance in the series.
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.

Laura Bailey I believes her name, and even Sabat as director seemed to have come out before the episodes airing and say that that's not what she sounds like most of the time, and he seemed to be right, plus she's gotten a lot of roles in Funi's Dubbings.

I actually wish with the new Blu-ray season sets that they'd fix that. it's just awful sounding.

Yeah, that first episode where she's Trunks just sounds...bad. Even if someone doesn't like her normal Trunks voice, I think they could still tell a world of difference between what is normally done with it and that instance. I guess she was just still finding her 'young boy' voice at the time or something, especially since this would have been much earlier on in her career.

Yeah, this was only her second role after Dende. She basically used her future Shin-Chan voice
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Actually, I think Trunks was her first. She didn't voice Dende in the original dub, Ceyli Delgadillo did. When they released the Orange Bricks, they went back and redubbed Dende using Bailey instead of Delgadillo. I agree, though. The first dub episode I saw was later in the Buu arc when Vegeta was fighting the fat Buu. When I went back and watched the earlier episodes, I definitely noticed a difference. That first line "Hey, Gohan. Watcha' doin'?" sounded so weird.

Actually, Laura Bailey recorded the Cell arc Dende lines first, since Funimation had lost contact with Ceyli Delgadillo, they cast a replacement. At the last minute, they got back in contact with her and Delgadillo redubbed all these lines for the release. Since she later left Funimation, Bailey was then cast as Dende for the Namek Saga redub, and redid Delgadillo's work in the Captain Ginyu and Frieza Sagas. The lines in the Perfect Cell and Cell Games Sagas are the original recordings.

Specifically which dub is it? Is it the Ocean Dub, Big Green Dub, FUNimation Dub or Speedy Dub?

It's the same thing when some people here talk about the "Kai dub" forgetting that there's other Kai dubs making unnecessary confusion.

While it's true he could (and probably) should have specified, given that his location is 'Kentucky' and that the question has since been answered in the vein of the original FUNi dub, I don't really see where any more confusion would be coming from. ^_^;

Sorry about that dbboxkaifan. I was talking about Funimation's original dub. :)

Y'know but there's more than just one English dub so it'd be better for everyone to always refer it to what it is.

Btw, hope my Level Blu-rays arrive tomorrow or Saturday really excited to get them in my possession!

I'll try to keep that in mind next time bud. besides I didn't think Ocean voice cast dubbed all the way up to around that point? I knew they did parts here and there? not really too knowledgeable on that. :?

Edit - and I honestly don't know what the speedy dub is? and I thought that the big green dub only did the movies? lol

I think he sounds awful in all of his appearances, but especially at the beginning.

Might I ask why exactly? Granted, I will admit it's not a natural young boy voice at all...but neither is Kusao's for what it's worth.

I'd like to point out: Kusao's Trunks was never even mentioned in his original post.

As for Trunks sounding awful: It's an obnoxious voice. I really dislike it, do to it's stuffy, raspy nature and lack of real character. I'm actually a much, MUCH bigger fan of Cathy Weseluck's Chibi Trunks from the Ocean Dub.

Oh I know it wasn't, and I didn't really mean to imply that he must be thinking of Kusao's as the better voice (guess it did come off that way though, my bad) - I just meant to point out that even in the original Japanese version, Trunks as a child has a highly suspect voice. Granted I can completely understand why they went that route though, it was just the same thing they had already done with Goku, Kuririn, and Gohan, only now in reverse; the younger version keeping the same actor as the older version.

...Come to think of it, did Kusao play baby Trunks?

At any rate, I don't think I've ever heard the Ocean young Trunks before.

Personally, I don't enjoy Kusao is Kid Trunks, even if I think he acts it cutely enough. But here you can hear both ocean dub Trunks and Goten. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i12StYRy-9c

If the acting seems suspect, do know that these episodes were rushed terribly through production and none of these actors are at their best because of it. Also, as a big follower of Cathy's work, I can definitely abide that she is pretty much fantastic top to bottom when give the chance to shine.

She actually uses a very similar voice for Spike from My Little Pony.

Thanks for the clip. Oh, and no worries there, I'm well aware of the rushed nature of the later dubbing they got to do for DBZ.

Hmm...it is definitely a more natural voice, but I can still hear a certain gruffness to it, but that's pretty much always there at least a little bit when you have a woman playing a little boy role. It's definitely a lot more reserved than Bailey's take, I'll admit that. Honestly though, I find Bailey to be a terrific actress (one of the best around, actually), so mostly I'm looking forward to hear how she might sound anew in Kai/Battle of Gods. She already sounds much better in the later games and movies than she did in the series dub proper, to my ears anyway.

And not to go too far off topic, but who's playing Goten here? There's a couple of times where they actually sound a lot like Kara Edwards. ...Wait...is that the same lady who plays Shippo in InuYasha?
