What is your best and worst moment being a DragonBall fan?

Post by SSJ3_Zack » Sun Jul 13, 2014 8:16 pm

Being a DragonBall fan has it's many ups and downs. Be it Battle of Gods or Funimation's tampering with the footage of the anime. Being a fan of this franchise can truly be a mix bag sometimes. I want to know what would your best moment being a DragonBall fan is? It could be anything from your memories of watching the DragonBall Z anime back on Toonami to maybe finally owning all the Dragon Boxes. I want to know what is the moment you can point to and say that, that was your best moment being a member of this fandom.

Equally I want to know what your worst moment being a DragonBall fan was? What is that one moment that made you question you whether you could still like DragonBall? Maybe it was feeling ripped off after buying the Orange Bricks or even Akira Toriyama's recent comments expanding the universe.

So please do share your personal memories of the best and worst moment's of being a fan of DragonBall. It can be anything so long as it's personal and means something to you!

My best moment of being a DragonBall fan
I guess I'll go first :). The best moment of being a DragonBall fan would have to be when I rediscovered the franchise! Back in mid 2011 I had not been a fan of the franchise in years. Having fallen out of love with it for various reasons. So one day in, I want to say July 2011 (But I could be off) I was browsing on YouTube when I stumbled upon the old Rock the Dragon opening. I got curious about the series and decided to look it up on the internet and found the old Funimation dub of Gohan & Kuririn VS Ginyu-Goku. Instantly I was hit by a wave of nostalgia. I started watching all the fights on YouTube and going on the DragonBall Wiki daily (Please don't crucify me ). Finally in late 2011 I found my entire collection of VHS tapes of the old Ocean/Westwood dub and that cemented my reborn love for all things DragonBall.

Over the past 3 years my taste in the franchise has changed, back then I was a dub fan and found the Japanese version to be weird and unusual (Even though I recall having fansubbed VHS's back when I was a child). However I found this website looking for information on Battle of Gods and reading the forums and the forum member's enthusiasm for the original version I decided to watch the series in Japanese and I haven't looked back since. For me nothing can replace that memory of me rediscovering the franchise. The nostalgia and the rediscovery of the awesome world Toriyama created can't be replicated, it was like seeing everything for the first time.

My worst moment being a DragonBall Fan
This might be a bit controversial but my worst moment would be well not a moment, but a realisation. As I became a bigger fan of DragonBall one thing became clearer. The creator of this amazing franchise that I love so much, didn't particularly care for it much. From what I've seen and read Akira Toriyama's sees DragonBall as nothing more than something that was his job once. And I get that, it was his bread and butter at the end of the day. I also get that he was likely sick of DragonBall after 10+ years of drawing it non-stop. But to a fan that is rather disheartening to hear and see. His recent unfiltered contributions have come off as rather blasé. His off the cuff comments like his revelation about Majin Boo or even DragonBall Minus spring to mind.

Now from what I've seen the horrid live action film made by Fox has stirred up something in him regarding DragonBall and he has become more active in recent years. I just wish that he could perhaps step back and evaluate what he wants to add and how it fits into his franchise. I wonder if he knows how big his series became and how many lives it has touched and influenced over the years.

What made Kai embarrassing? The remastering?

My best moment: The entire lead-up to Battle of Gods, including the whole Hokotate thing and meeting the director of the movie.

My worst moment: The entire lead-up to Battle of Gods. So many translations. So much lost sleep. So many websites that do not translate or lose sleep, but know how to use "copy" and "paste" commands.

Best moment, meeting SEAN MUTHAFUCKIN SCHEMMEL at NYC Comic Con 2011.

Worst moment, not seeing Chris Sabat or Justin Cook at NYC Comic Con 2011. They were at the panel, but not on the floor beforehand for me to see.

Best moments: All the days after school watching Dragon Ball Z, also later in life doing the great rewatch on DVD for the first time and the battle of gods situation.
Worst moments: Being afraid of never seeing a new Dragon Ball animated movie release again and dragon ball evolution did not click for me.

On the matter of Toriyama, I view things quite differently. To me, Toriyama cares about DBZ more now than he did in the last year or so. He seems to have found his passion once again and it feels good.

Sure, he rarely puts a lot of thought in advance of things, but he does that for everything. Toriyama's an in the moment kind of guy, and that's what made Dragon Ball what it is (with a little editorial tug here and there).

Hard to single a best moment. First getting into the series was awesome, I loved reading the manga, and Kai was my dream come true as I loved my dub cast (for the most part, Kai fixed a few things) but I still wanted more from them (and the script/music).

Worst moment was probably the 10 minutes or so I tried to humor DB Evolution before feeling sick about it.

I agree about reading the manga and about how great the dub for Kai actually turned out to be. I also agree that evolution was a weak link in the chain of this franchise.

Best Moment: To rediscover DBZ in 2010 after MANY years. Such nostalgic moment & to say I'm still loving it till today is something.

Worst Moment: Encountering some jokers in Youtube comment section. I know opinion varies, but saying DBZ fanbase as cancerous is not making their preferred anime fanbase looking "Great" by any chance.

He does seem to care a bit more with all the recent contributions. But for every Battle of Gods we get, we also get a DragonBall Minus. I think he is at his best when he has someone to help (for lack of a better word) guide him. From what I've seen in the DBZ Movie 2015 thread, it's the fact that his former editor complimented his ideas for the new film and that has gotten a lot of people excited for said new film (Not to mention it being a new DragonBall film of course ).

The best moments of being a DBZ fan were all of the memories I have with the show. All of the debating and discussing in school. Being 10 years old and pretending I knew something about the series beyond the "Namek Saga." Discussing it with classmates, going on the very primitive version of the internet (back in '97/'98) and gathering up pictures of the series (it's not like Google Images, you had to find this stuff). Then, one of my favorite moments was when I realized that my collection was complete with the Japanese Dragon Boxes and every US release ever! Then, that same feeling when I collected the Daizenshuus and really completing my collection.

The worst thing about being a DBZ fan is when someone shoots it down and compares it to Naruto or some other anime. Like cool, but I'm not an anime buff. Sure, it might not look as good as another anime, but I'd rather take this show that solidified my childhood over some vampire/ghost/machine/forest travel anime any day!

The best moment for me was spending the "Toonami" years watching Dragon Ball Z with friends and family in a crowded house. And later spending hours a night talking about the characters, predictions for the next episodes, and telling pretty immature DB related jokes.

Worst time was possibly when I fell out of the franchise after watching the end of the Buu saga. I was becoming completely uninterested in the series at that point and didn't think I was going to come back to it.

I have more "best" moments than I do worse ones.

Best: Becoming a fan. After seeing Goku throw a car I was hooked. The whole atmosphere was great. It was so different from the previous two anime I've watched before Dagonball which was Astro Boy and Kimba The Lion(My 2nd Fave anime). Another great moment was marathoning the Tenkaichi Budokais with Tinesha. I love our little anime dates. My third best moment has to be making my first AMV(DBZ). It was great. Got me into making AMVs and now I love doing it. Made a whole channel on Youtube for it. I love my subs and the people I subbed too. I love being in AMV contest at Anime Conventions and MEPs on Youtube.

Worst: Watching Goten's role in GT. I was so hyped for him, Goku, and Trunks being in space. Then Pan kinda fucked that up huh  . I was upset over that. My second worst is buying a Senzu Bean. Now listen. You may ask. "HOW!?". They tasted horrible. My 3rd worst moment is a secret.

Best: Childhood memories.
Worst: Finding now that Satan's wife has a portuguese boys name, Miguel.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Best - Seeing the inspiration DB/DBZ has given upcoming artists and novelists.

Worst - Superman Death Battle: Arguing with DBZ fanboys who:
- Don't know how instant transmission works.
- Don't know how the Spirit Bomb works.
- Explaining How a Death Battle works
- Explaining How Goku fights based on whe would and wouldn't do to an enemy.
Thats stressful.

Reading the new Info Toriyama is retconning is painful.
- Not enjoying BoG as much as I thought I would.
- Seeing reguritated plot devices and victory method resorts being reused over and over
- Seeing all the characters always losing until Goku shows up.
- Goku's fights being really predictable now.
- Listening to Travis William's Daemon Clarke Impression. Terrible.
- Seeing Gohan's hidden power eclipse Vegeta. Mystic Gohan being useless in all animated adaptions.

People excessively hating GT just for the sake of hating it. Literally.
- Arrogant BOG fanboys.
- Ocean Dub Fanboys and trolls.

Getting bad game after bad game year after year is just oppressive.
- Having to argue with casuals and scrubs alike on what these games actually need.
- Debating with Tenkaichi fanboys who bash Budokai for no real reason.
- Arguing why we need a Burst Limit 2 and not another terrible Raging Blast game.
- Listing to Treevax insist to Namco that a 100% accurate storymode is still a big deal.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

My worst moment: When I finished reading the original manga. I didn't want it to end.

Engaging with the Red Ribbon storyline was like a dream I never wanted to end. Toonami didn't announce when things would take breaks, so when I got home from school, it was pretty much a guessing game as to whether a new episode would premiere or not.

My worst moment? I guess whenever someone's opinion on an aspect of DB is just absolutely stupid.
