Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods"

Is Meredith McCoy really coming back as #18 in this dub? Apparently talk says she is, and Chris Sabat briefly credited her as a voice among the others in his discussion about the red-carpet movie.

Indeed she is, it was announced via the Battle of Gods section of the FUNi DBZ site a little while back. Brad Jackson is also returning as Oolong, making them both two former-Z-dub actors to return over their Kai counterparts.

I'm still rather confused as to why Colleen isn't reprising 18. Possibly because they wan't 18 to sound older given the point in time the film takes place? If so Colleen could do that no problem. If they wanted 18 to sound older she could just use the tone she uses for Riza Hawkeye.

Honestly, I'm thinking it has more to do with the fact that McCoy was available for this, since a movie takes a lot less time to record than multiple episodes of a series. FUNimation still seems to be on good terms with McCoy, and I want to say that Colleen started playing the role in video games prior to Kai, so it was most likely just a matter of her being more available at certain times. Kai rolled around and she wasn't, so they kept Colleen, but now for the movie, they've reverted back again. It could also have something to do with Colleen being Mai, though I can't imagine the two voices sounding too similar, considering.

All I know for sure is that I do hope Colleen keeps the role again for the rest of Kai, so at least something will be freakin' consistent over there.

The point is they wouldn't. Colleen does Gohan and 18 in Kai. Listen to those two side by side and see if they sound anything alike.

I don't think it was a case of them sounding too similar. I think it was simply that McCoy was available again, and decided to use her since they could. Most likely, they'll use Colleen in The Final Chapters for consistency's sake. Same goes for Oolong.

I don't really get your points. The fact is, 18 and Mai are both in the movie. They've never been in the same space together until this movie, and they've never had the same actress playing them until recently.

There's also a slightly higher chance that Mai and 18 would sound similar since they're both female roles, which wouldn't require the same kind of rasp that Colleen uses for Gohan. I agree that she could probably make them sound different enough, especially given the age difference for the characters (at least in this movie), but Sabat may have just decided to avoid the issue.

Notably, they also misspelled Beerus as Birus, but whatever.

Yeah, I mean, it's incorrect for what FUNi is going for but Birus isn't technically wrong from what I understand. 'Birusu' into 'Birus'. Many of the initial fansubs for the movie used that. It does miss the beer pun and retain the initial virus part though so it's certainly not the best thing to use.

No way! If that local listing isn't just my phone finding the closest theater, it looks like we may be going to the same one. If your listing was suppose to say the Tinsletown in Boardman anyway.

The final chapters of Dr. Slump took place in 1984 (Daizenshuu confirm that there are places in the Dragon World that use the Gregorian Calendar, one of them is the Penguin Village, where Dr. Slump takes place), and the first chapters of Dragon Ball presumably take place during the same year since the characters of Dr. Slump look the same in their DB cameo. But going by the DB calendar, the first DB chapters take place in Age 749, so Age 749 = 1984. And, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods takes place in Age 778, which is 2013, if you do the math! I wonder if that was a coincidence, or intentional...

Yeah, it's been brought up a couple of times before. I'm going to guess it was probably intentional, because Toriyama could have easily altered the story to not require Pan and picked a different year in that gap.

I dont see the problem with Meredith if she improved her delivery. I mean if they're using Kai's direction that she'll have to re-adjust her voice to sound more conveying. I get it that as #18 her voice was really flat and boring. Or that she was too deep and butch sounding as #18 but if Jeremy Inman can pull a 180 on his #16 voice than. I'd assume Meredith can as well.

I really wish they didnt affliate any reference to the "Virus" prototype concept to his character anymore because it just doesnt fit the pun outward of the character anywhere in his final concept. Where as 'Beerus' seems to show the contrary to that.

No. DBZ: BOZ has Clinkenbeard voicing Android 18. That's under the Z title. So it's more likely just the fact that McCoy was available.
