Disturbed/Other 'Real' Bands Comment on DBZ?
I just came across a post on Facebook where the official Disturbed page wished a happy birthday to one of the members of Deftones, and of course both of their music having been used in the dub soundtracks of DBZ movies came to my mind. For some reason, this brought a question to mind that I've never looked into before or heard anyone else ponder...have any of the bands that were used in those scores ever made comment about DBZ before, be it in an interview, or just in a post somewhere, or whatever? Surely they had to at least be aware that their songs were licensed for use in the movies at the time, so I'm wondering if any of them have ever made mention of it before.

I'd imagine you'd have to do some digging to find out about that, and ... I have no clue where you'd even start. Obviously the bands would have been happy about the royalties, but as for whether it had any significant impact on their popularity, I can't say.
On a related note, I've always liked the dub score for those movies, especially the Broly ones. Not because I like that kind of music. Generally, I find heavy metal music to be either too pretentious or too brutal (though there are a few decent tracks on the OSTs). It's just that the movies are for the most part like your typical Hollywood action movies. Take Movie 8, for example, which is actually a pretty good flick despite its shitty ending and does a pretty good job of setting things up before the big fight scene. Most of that movie is just Broly destroying buildings and punching people in the face. It's entertaining as hell, but not very subtle, even by DBZ standards. Point is, aggressive music fits that to a T. Obviously, it isn't appropriate at all times or even in all of the movies IMO, but for that one it always kinda made sense whenever it was used.

I don't like Hardrock or Metal at all but I admit I loved it when they put Disturbed and Dream Theater in the Soundtracks, it really made the specials feel like real movies different from the anime with the heightened, and more consistent artwork with the more intense music to emphasize it. It was infact how I was introduced to these bands and I almost cant think of any Broly movie without the songs in particular. Their marketing was great and it was what created the manly, hardcore feeling DBZ is known for in the US. Even if the japanese feel otherwise, I just never got the right feeling from J-Pop songs like "Hero" it just felt way too corny and generic for me. Effeminite men with autotuned voices just cant pump me up.

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

I really despise OSTs like this, also the vocals are pretty bothering me being at the same time the characters are talking.
But I think, that the Trunks Special with music by Dream Theater was pretty good. Of course that I prefer the Japanese Original, but I saw the US version first.

Also lots of fans were saying on forums, like they were introduced to this band trough DBZ.
I wasn't, as my dad is huge rock and metal fan and knew this band for a long time, which ties with this funny story.
As you are a kid and try hard to win your parent over something you like a lot, altough it's impossible for parents to get really into something which doesn't concerns them at all -
I told my dad that the show I'm watching is really cool and that in the last movie I saw, there is even sountrack by Dream Theater, so he should watch it (as his favorite band being there is making the series an instat masterpiece).
What's more funny is that even DT being there wasn't cool enough for my dad, to ever watch the movie, more so the DBZ. Now I'm 25 and I like DBZ for almost 15 years and my dad never saw a glimpse of it since then, hahaha.
But it's truth that some of the jokes that were killing me as a kid
kind of let me feel embarassed nowadays.
