Re: Dr. Slump: The Movies (1-5) by Discotek
For anyone who's interested, Discotek has finally added this to their online store.
If we do get a second set, I really, really hope they can score the Abale-chan short. It's a real gem, not to mention it reunites the 80s voice actors. Are you sure it was scored by Kikuchi, SaiyaJedi? I could have sworn it recycled music from the 90s series. Perhaps it featured a combination of both...

Haha, I didn't even realize I used the word "score" twice in the same post (and in different contexts!).
The first time I said it, I meant that I was hoping Discotek could "score" (obtain, nab, get, etc.) the Abale-chan short film. Meaning, I'm hoping they can license it.
The second time I said it, I was referring to the short film's musical score. As in, the background music. For example, Shunsuke Kikuchi provided the background music for the Dragon Ball Z movies. He "scored" them.
Didn't mean to confuse you.

Great unboxing video but I found the way you said Arale to be cringeworthy, it's Ah-ra-le (lé) not Aray-lee then again people use the wrong pronunciation of Saiyan (Say-un than the proper Sai-yan).thedarkuniter wrote:I got the set yesterday, did a mini review and unboxing of it:

Here's the opening of Dr. Slump and Arale-chan in Japanese and other languages:

I'm still quite upset that Jonu Media (and/or Emon Entertainment) cancelled the Spanish release which was awesome and featured the newly dubbed Castillan version.

haha you don't happen to recall which volume that is in, do you?Adamant wrote:There's the occasional hiccup (there's one scene where the characters perform the opening song from the anime, something the translator very very clearly didn't pick up on) but nothing super major.
Anyway, I'm rereading the Viz versions right now, many for the first time since they were published, and I have been loving it. Yeah, there are a few instances where alcohol is referred to as "Super Punch" and that sort of thing, but the translations are pretty good. The advantage that Dr. Slump has over a more story-based series like Dragon Ball, is that Slump is so filled with insanity and non-sequiturs that even when the translators do something a little strange, it still reads ok. And things like the occasional translator note fits in with the feel of the series better than most.
And to veer more towards on-topic for this thread -- I got a notification from Amazon that my package will ship earlier than expected, so it should arrive sometime late next week! Yay! Can't wait!!

It's not even recognizable as the opening theme unless you already know that's what it originally was.
The end of chapter 5 got mutilated so bad there's nothing even resembling a joke left. It's incredibly clear the translator didn't understand the dialogue there at all.medama_oyaji wrote:Anyway, I'm rereading the Viz versions right now, many for the first time since they were published, and I have been loving it. I got this in today. Watching the first movie now and loving it. I hope it does well enough for discotek's standards to warrant more Slump releases for us.
I am seeing what I believe to be some unfortunate typos fairly close together in movie 2: During the phenomenal Dr. Mashirito song, the background vocals sing "Dr. Mashirito, Dr Mashrito"; Mashirito then says to Midori, "Greetings, my wife" to which she responds with, "You wife??"; and a little bit later Peasuke, in regards to needing to pee, says, "Senbei, if we don't get there soon, I won't be able to hold in it."
Some minor foibles however because, honestly, I'm a much better person due to "I love Mashirito you love Mashirito," and you'll be one too.

Well, I just did my part and ordered this on RightStuff. Hopefully enough people do the same, so we can at least get the rest of the movies brought over.

I've only ever read a couple volumes of the Dr. Slump manga, and seen a couple episodes at cons thanks to the ever awesome Tim Eldred, but my set came in today and I look forward to checking these movies out this weekend!

So I watched the first movie, and I noticed that, at the end, the fade-out wasn't present. As in, it looked like it was starting to fade out, but then it just did a hard cut to the next movie. It was quite jarring. Is that a problem with the source material, or was that Discotek?

If anyone's still on the fence about checking out this set, trust me when I say that Movie 2 is worth the price of admission and then some.

Yeah, I just finished watching the second movie... that is awesome. It's amazing to think that Dr. Slump so quickly got such a full-length, full-storied movie, while DBZ just went with the same, repetitive, 45-minute things for years!
Also, as I was watching the space battle in this movie, my ears got crazy confused. The sound effect used for the Gatchan's laser? Same sound effect used for DB ki blasts! The sound effect used when the bug ships would blow up? The same sound effect used for SSJ transformations/power-ups!

Heh, I've noticed similar things in a lot of older anime that I've watched. I forget which episode or special it was, but there was at least one Lupin III thing I watched that not only had a bunch of seiyuu from Dragon Ball in it, it kept having the same sound effects too. It was...weird.Gaffer Tape wrote:Also, as I was watching the space battle in this movie, my ears got crazy confused. The sound effect used for the Gatchan's laser?
