I check out a few (portuguese) blogs. A few of them have some access to the backstage scene of those companies and inform the readers of relevant news before its official or inform us of a few extra details like that.

This is one of them: http://bongop-leituras-bd.blogspot.pt/

Regarding Dragon Ball (read the comments): http://bongop-leituras-bd.blogspot.pt/2 ... -luta.html

Oh. So most likely it was just a matter of not being officially cancelled but also not being renewed. They probably tried extending the original 16 volumes to go into the "Z" portion to see if it would increase sales.

Seriously, this is just sad. :cry: One of the best DB editions we've ever seen and it just gets scrapped.

The blog you showed seems pretty nice, though. Is this Bongop fellow an Asa employee? He seems to really know his stuff.

I don't think so. He must be connected to the "scene" but he must be more like a journalist than an actual employee. I'm not saying he really is a journalist, just that I think he is more like that regarding this stuff than an employee. Anyway, its obvious that he knows and talks to relevant people to post his stuff.

Sorry to bump this thread but does anyone know of a website that sells these and ships internationally?

I tried Fnac.pt which they do send overseas but for a charge of 10€ and that's just too much, Wook.pt is out of stock for all, BookDepository doesn't have it, nor Amazon or Fishpond. *sigh*

It'll either be buy 'em all (4 vols for 8€ and 14 for 153.86€ if in store), pay 21€ for each (nope) or go with the English censored Viz release. I'm going on vacation to PT in a couple of days so while I'll be able to grab vol 1 for cheap I don't think that'll be the case for the rest as I'm not staying there for too long.

There are a few websites like Olx, where you can find people selling some, but good luck finding all of them and scheduling with everyone right away.

You know what? I have all 18 volumes that came out. You're coming over from the UK, right? You're great at finding the cheapest prices for stuff over there. If you're stopping by Lisbon, and willing to bring a copy of Battle of Z for the PS3 (with or without the Naruto costume), both GT sets and the first 2 DB sets that MangaUK put out so far with you, I'll gladly trade you all 18 volumes in person. :D (If you find that a fair trade, depending at what prices you can find those)

I've got Battle of Z for the 360 (it has the Naruto costume code dunno if it works) and regarding the 2xDB/GT sets I can buy them brand new factory sealed from HMV. I tried Gumtree and literally nothing of "Dragon Ball" or "Dragonball" pops up.

There's a sale of the ol' Dragon Ball manga collection on Olx.pt but the spines are a mess and don't line up together nicely, still, for 60€ it isn't a bad deal for someone who doesn't made that kind of detail.

I guess you can edit the title, wasn't the edition canceled a few years ago?

I don't have a 360, though, which is why I said PS3 :P
I asked for the 5 things because you always find stuff for cheap, so you can probably get everything for around that value (which is still way cheaper than what I got them for lol), making it a good deal for both of us.

In the interest of full transparency, the spines of the new release don't line up that great either, though the quality itself is leagues above the old yellow release.

Not at the moment, but if you go back a few pages on this thread there should be a few pictures.

That translation is horrendous. "Saiyanjin", lol.

The release he saw was the old one, based on the spanish translation which wasn't great to begin with. Saiyanjin was one of the few odities that make no sense lol It's basically the Viz translation in portuguese, except uncensored.

*sigh* This certainly is better than the old release (yellow edition) but still symmetrically imprecise which displeases me.

Rukura, I really appreciate your offer (very tempting) and it is better than paying for it at Fnac but I'm gonna skip due to the spines.

Actually, the Spanish translation is pretty good. The problem is that whoever they got to translate from Spanish to Portuguese was utterly incompetent.

I would not recommend it. If you can only read in English and Portuguese, this edition is by far the best. The translation is better than Viz's (even though it's based upon it), the paper quality is comparable to that of the VizBigs, the quality of the printing is top notch, and it's 100% uncensored. It's not perfect, but it only has minor annoyances, so, in my opinion, you'd be losing a lot more than symmetrical precision by passing these up.

Its normal in my lunchtime I go to Fnac and read these :D
But there's only 18 volumes available I guess.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro

Fair enough. Sent you a PM with a picture of all 18 lined up, in case you wanna think it over :wink:

And seemed to try their damndest to dubify it, from what I remember from that old release.

Yeah, I don't know about that. All I can tell you is that I own 5 kanzemban volumes of the Spanish release (which as far as I know did not get an updated translation, in case you're wondering), and the translation is extremely solid.

The only thing I remember from the old Portuguese release was that I got the first volume a long, long time ago (I think I gave it away to somebody at some point) and the translation felt incredibly awkward (can't remember any exact line, but I seem to recall somebody in this thread mentioning '¡que pesado eres!' being rendered blindly as 'que pesado és!', which is ridiculous given that 'pesado' in Spanish in such a context actually means 'annoying' instead of 'heavy'.

Exactly. Most of the character names and some of the in-universe objects were changed to their dub version:

Dragon Balls = Bolas de Cristal
Kame Sen'nin = Tartaruga Genial
Chichi = Kika
Tsuru Sen'nin = Corvo Genial
Piccolo = Coraçãozinho de Satã
Freeza = Freezer
#16, #17, #18, #19 and #20 = C-16, C-17, C-18, C-19 and C-20

Can't say if these are all of them as I've never watched the Portuguese dub in its entirety (can't stand it). Some of the names stayed the same, though:

Kami-Sama (not Todo-Poderoso)
Kaiou (not Kahib)
Kaiou Shin (not Neptuno).

However:

Kinto'un = Kinton (not Nuvem Mágica)
Saiyajin = Saiyanjin (not Guerreiro do Espaço)
Super Saiyajin = Super Saiyanjin, (not Super Guerreiro)
Mr. Satan = Mr. Satã (not Hércules)
Majin Buu = Monstro Bu (not Bubu).

Right on the mark. We've also got cases of "perdoa!" instead of "desculpa!", excessive cursing (the Spanish curse a lot more than the Portuguese) and overuse of the future tense, which is rarely used in Portuguese, among just general awkwardness. Overall, it's readable, it was through it that I read Dragon Ball in its entirety for the first time, but yeah, it is pretty awkward. It's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to the continuation of Viz's Full Color Comics: so I can add them to Asa's 18 volumes and have a complete collection again.
