Toriyama drew Pokemon?

Post by veshira » Sat Sep 16, 2006 5:51 pm

I'm sorry if this isn't appropiate due to the lack of Dragon Ball, however this is a Toriyama question, and I don't know where else to ask.

A school friend of mine mentioned to me that Toriyama did a small bit of a Pocket Monsters manga (there are many, many out there.) I was wondering if anyone knew what she was refering to, as I can't find any mention of it on Google. Was this a tribute to Pocket Monsters, like what some manga-ka did for Dragon Ball? Or did Toriyama actually draw his own Pocket Monsters manga?

I'm sorry, I have a real lack of information here. :(
What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?

Are you certain your friend didn't just pull this out of her ass? Or perhaps she was fooled by false information, herself? I'm pretty sure I've seen a complete bibliography of Toriyama's works before, and that just sounds a little weird.

Akira Toriyama has never written a Pocket Monster manga or parody that I know of. Perhaps your friend is speaking of a picture he did about it, or an affiliation that he or someone with a similar name has with the series.
I'm going to put the debates to a rest- Broli is not the Legendary Super Saiyan. Goku is not the Legendary Super Saiyan. I'm the Legendary Super Saiyan. And while I'm at it, I'm Batman too.

From what I remember the author of that series had a similiar name. Haven't been into Pokemon since the fad days when I was a kid so I can't say for sure...

Akira Toriyama wasn't part of the production of the Pokemon anime series.

Actually, Toshihiro Ono is the artist for the Pokemon manga.

Doesn't really sound that much like Akira Toriyama.

1: The Pocket Monsters anime series is still running.

2: From what I've heard, Toriyama was hardly a part of the production of the Dragon Ball anime series.

Toshiro One wrote a Pocket Monsters manga, "Dengeki Pikachu." There are like... a bajillion Pocket Monsters manga.

Anywho, Veshira, your friend might have read something like this:
Dogasu's Backpack (http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/manga/pocket_monsters.html) wrote: The world of the Pocket Monsters manga is unlike any other version of the franchise. While the manga does incoporate the story and basic elements from the video game, the series places most of its emphasis on filling each chapter with as many sight gags and absurd situations as possible. Think of Akira Toriyama's earlier works, such as Dr. Slump and the early Dragon Ball stories, and you have a pretty good idea of what reading the manga is like. Almost every pokemon in the manga can speak human language, and when they do, they usually tack a syllable or two from their name onto the end of their sentence. Pokemon can hold regular jobs, like humans can, and have adventures alongside the regular animals (like fish and birds) and the pokemon made up soley for the manga. Pokemon are able to evolve at will, and then are able to de-evolve at any time. Obviously, the world of the Pocket Monsters manga is quite different from any other interpretation of the series.
It says it's simular to Toriyama's early writing style, but not that he actually wrote one.

Heres a link if you want to read more about some other Pocket Monster manga:
http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/manga.html

And since this had absolutely nothing to do with Dragon Ball, EX is gonna come and like... eat us or something.

Hmm...I've heard that before around the height of pokemon's popularity: that after gt Toriyama's next big project was pokemon. I also heard he sold his soul for this kind of success but we all know that isn't true..right..?

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.
