In DBZ fighting games which is better- tall or small?

Post by GS7X7 » Mon Aug 18, 2014 10:13 pm

On one hand taller characters have huge limbs and can hit more space and should have better offense. However, shorter characters should (by theory) take up less hittable space and have far better defense.

So, overall.... which is better? In games with chibi characters, Kurillin, and big giants like Brolly and Ginyu, do the tall characters have the advantage or do the short characters have the advantage?

Short characters tend to have the advantage because Dragon Ball games don't get a ton of time in development. A decent chunk of the time, the bigger characters don't make contact with smaller character hitboxes.

The bigger characters also tend to end up being cripplingly slow to balance out their higher damage output. Except this disadvantage, at least in my experience, vastly outweighs any advantages that the Oozarus and their ilk have.

Just the other day I was playing Budokai Tenkaichi 3 with a friend on the Wii and kicked his ass with Dr. Wheelo. So I vote taller/bigger.

Yeap. Speed is often far more important than melee damage in fighting games but the trade-off doesn't take this into account.

This reminds me of when I was fighting the final boss of Budokai 2, Kid Buu, as Gohan and Goku, and couldn't fucking hit him because he was so short that most of my punches went over his head.

The average height characters are a head and a half taller than him. I ended up getting frustrated and beating him with Goten, who himself is about a head shorter than Buu.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.

Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Yeah, he's often pretty broken due to being the short character with the best stats. Most of the time the advantage short characters get is mitigated by them being fairly weak in all other areas, but Boo is a powerhouse as well as being short. Same with Super Saiyan 2 Gohan most of the time, and GT Goku in Infinite World.

I'd say Pure Buu is the most consistently overpowered character throughout these games in general, except maybe Vegetto. He's usually one of the fastest characters as well, if not THE fastest.

That rush attack in Tenkaichi 2...(shudders)

I think he's also the only character in Ultimate Tenkaichi that can perform an infinite combo, though it might be a glitch.

Don't remind me of that shao Kahn like boss. I tried beating him as a little kid, I got beaten so. Badly. Heck even when I asked my dad to do it, he got whooped too

You asked your dad?

Most dads tend to be pretty bad at games, mine probably couldn't get past the first level of most games. :P

Ah, that's kind of cruel. He should have tossed you a few bones here and there and let you win some matches, but I guess in his own odd way maybe he figured being merciless would toughen you up.
