That isn't how it works though... 40 tons is 40 tons disregarding any gravitational effects. The gravity is just a side effect. Tons is one of the measurements in regard to mass. And mass doesn't change no matter what planet you go to. Yes, 40 tons is going to be 400 tons on a different planet. But the weight is still standardized, you don't change the value because you're under different gravitational effects. An astronaut doesn't go to a planet wearing 20 kilograms(another measurement of mass) and start calling it 200 kilograms just because the gravity has changed. If you wanted to accurately define your weight on a different planet you would use Newtons as it is a measurement of force, not mass.dbgtFO wrote:Everyone can have their own opinion, however you are stating Heaven has more gravity than Earth as a fact, which isn't true.
Besides it doesn't make sense. The weights were stated to be 40 tons in total. If Heaven had for example 10x the gravity of Earth, then the weights would weigh only 4 tons on Earth, which would make Goku even weaker rather than stronger.
How much can Goku lift?

Re: How much can Goku lift?
The difference between mass and weight, huh. I goofed on that one.
Still, if it did have a higher weight, than it would have on Earth, it's pretty silly, that South Kaio didn't point out how, this would be an even more impressive feat.
It will stay as a mere assumption.

Re: How much can Goku lift?
Where supplementary guide implies that giant Piccolo weighs 116 tons?
Re: How much can Goku lift?
Of course it is only my opinion. But it is still a possibility. My point was, ignoring my opinion, that there are a few ways in which we can perceive the 40 tons as an impressive feat. I follow the opinion that Heaven has much more gravity than Earth because it is a much larger planet capable of housing a good portion of the living realm. The guide books kind of support this as Heaven is drawn as a massive world. Or you could be of the opinion that the 40 tons is an impressive feat because Goku was flying while wearing it and it is more difficult to lift that weight while flying. Like the SEG suggests. I never said my opinion must be a fact. I just don't get why people need to harp on Goku lifting that weight when there could be any number of possible explanations as to why he'd struggle with it.dbgtFO wrote:The difference between mass and weight, huh. Piccolo:
Height: 226 cm
Weight: 116 kg

Piccolo enlarges his body to over ten times its normal size.
Giant Piccolo - 10X his normal size
Super Giant Piccolo - >10X his normal size
According to the square cube law, Piccolo’s weight would grown in 3 dimensions.
So 116kg x10 x10 x10 = 116,000kg (116 tons)

Re: How much can Goku lift?
Actually, I just remembered the best strength feat: Tao pai pai can lift ~1,000,000 tons. Yup 1 million. He threw a 1 ton (or 1/2 don't remember but it doesn't matter because i didn't calc this) pillar 2300 km at mach 20.77 speeds. The pillar weight was done by pixel scaling the pillar's size in the manga and comparing it to Tao's height, then figuring out how much marble would weigh with that size. Sounds crazy but considering the feat also calcs at about 5 tonnes of tnt which is building destroying level and SSJ2 tier fighters have planet busting punches, it makes sense.
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

This is completely ridiculous, and I cannot believe that anyone capable of rational thought honestly thinks that Toriyama gave two-thirds of a pair of shits about making sure that stuff like this was consistent with real life.xmysticgohanx wrote: He threw a 1 ton (or 1/2 don't remember but it doesn't matter because i didn't calc this) pillar 2300 km at mach 20.77 speeds. That would be the sensible answer. But we can't just do that. We have to pull calculations out of our asses that would probably disturb Toriyama on some level if he ever learned how much time was spent on these things.KentalSSJ6 wrote:As much as the plot demands.

Actually, no, because your "satire" forgets basic stuff like what I pointed out. You forget the reason for why some things are discarded in these discussions and then try to point out an apparent general inconsistency in these discussions originated from that disregard.Rocketman wrote:Mine are done to mock the over-analytical POWUH LEBELS crowd. Re: How much can Goku lift?
The way I see it, Goku as a kid could lift a car & smash a big rock with his bare hands, and by the Boo arc, he could barely lift 10 tons on each limb while flying. Taopaipai just threw a pillar. Kame-sennin & Piccolo just destroyed the moon. I don't care about how much all these things weight, or what side-effects the moon's destruction should have, because fuck science when it comes to fiction.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Re: How much can Goku lift?
I mean, look at this guy! He's not even straining to lift that boulder, and he's only using one hand! And it's made of granite because reasons so it weighs at least 5 tons. Multiply that by the amount of pressure that gravity is forcing down on him, and it's obvious that he's capable of punching through planets because power scaling and rage boost X39 brought about by exposure to excessive dynamite.Spoiler:

Re: How much can Goku lift?
I think it would be hilarious if Toriyama came out of nowhere in an interview, and said that Piccolo's weight didn't increase, and he was more or less a giant Piccolo-shaped balloon.Tyro wrote:I'm no mathematician, but I'm pretty sure 116,000 kg = 255,736.2241 lbs = 127.868 tons ~ 128 tons.Tsufuru wrote:Super Exciting Guide wrote:Tyro wrote:Where supplementary guide implies that giant Piccolo weighs 116 tons?
